SUNY Cobleskill Fighting Tiger Weekly Recap

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s swimming & diving team posted a sweep over North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) rivals Wells College and Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at a double-dual meet hosted by Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. The Fighting Tigers defeated the host Express by a score of 130-55 while beating the Bison by a 103-79 margin. Junior Anthony McGorsik, East Hampton, N.Y., East Hampton High School, captured the 200-yard freestyle in a time of 1:58.79 and the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 55.98 seconds as Cobleskill improved to 4-2 overall on the season versus head-to-head competition.

The Fighting Tiger Western Equestrian Team moved into the top position in the Inter-collegiate Horse Show Association (IHSA) Region 3 Zone 2 rankings with victories in a pair of shows hosted by Morrisville State College on Saturday. Cobleskill posted a team score of 26 points to better the five-team field in the opener then came back to tally 33 points in the nightcap to record the sweep. Junior Morgan O’Sullivan, Killingsworth, Conn., Middletown High School, earned High Point Rider honors in each show to lead the Orange & Black who currently sit on top of the regional rankings with a total of 169 points.

Sophomore Zach Haskins, Warnerville, N.Y., Cobleskill-Richmondville High School, was the men’s indoor track & field team’s top performer at the Pioneer Invitational #1 hosted by Utica College in Utica, N.Y. on Saturday.  Haskin met a pair of New York State College Track Conference (NYSCTC) Championship Provisional Qualifying Standards by placing fifth in the pole vault clearing a height of 12' 9 ½" and sixth overall in the high jump clearing a height of 6'2". The Fighting Tigers posted a team total of 44 points to finish in fifth place in the sixth team field at the event.

The women’s swimming & diving team swept NEAC rivals Wells College and Gallaudet University on Saturday afternoon at a double-dual meet hosted by Wells College in Aurora, N.Y. The Fighting Tigers defeated the host Express 100-79 and the Bison by a score of 108-88 to improve to 2-5 overall versus head-to-head competition. Freshman distance swimmer Michelle Moffett, Staten Island, N.Y., St. John Villa Academy, won the 1000-yard freestyle in a time of 14:19.87 and the 500-yard freestyle in 6:58.33.
Senior hurdler Emily Belewich, Ava, N.Y., Adirondack High School, led the women’s indoor track & field team to a score of 59 points and a fourth place finish in a field of six teams at the Pioneer Invitational #1 hosted by Utica College in Utica, N.Y. on Saturday.  Belewich captured the 60-meter hurdles in a NYSCTC Championship Provisional Qualifying Standard meeting time of 9.75 seconds.

The women’s basketball team won one-of-three NEAC home contests during the week losing to the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats on Wednesday 82-68 on Wednesday then defeating Keuka College Wolves on Saturday 70-59 prior to losing to the Wells College Express on Sunday 56-55 to move to 3-3 overall including a 2-1 mark in NEAC play. Freshman forward Shaliyah Graham, Bronx, N.Y., Martin Luther King Jr. High School, currently leads the team in scoring at 13.7 points per contest.

The Fighting Tiger men’s basketball team dropped three NEAC home games during the week to fall to 0-8 overall including a 0-3 mark in league action. On Wednesday Cobleskill dropped an 80-67 decision to the SUNY Polytechnic Wildcats on Wednesday prior to losing to the Keuka College Wolves on Saturday in overtime 84-78 prior and to the Wells College Express on Sunday 67-59. Senior swingman Joel Costello, Middleburgh, N.Y., Middleburgh High School/Tompkins-Cortland Community College, leads the team in scoring at 14.3 points per game and rebound at 8.3 per game.
