From that point on, the Phoenix begin a comeback effort which saw them tie the contest with 29 seconds left to play when senior guard Marquis Nelson, Hagerstown, Md., Edison High School, scored off an offensive rebound.

Regulation was followed with an exciting overtime period which featured a pair of ties and five lead changes with Cobleskill coming out on top on Costello’s last second heroics.

Soil Scientist Dr. Laura Lengnick to Speak at SUNY Cobleskill

Written By Editor on 10/26/16 | 10/26/16

How do we feed a growing world population when the way we eat fuels climate change? On Thursday, November 3, Laura Lengnick, renowned sustainable agriculture expert and author of Resilient Agriculture: Cultivating Food Systems for a Changing Climate, will discuss how to adapt agricultural practices and food systems to survive and thrive in a changing climate. The lecture will be free and open to the public.

“Climate change is upon us, and agriculture is inextricably involved,” Lengnick said. “Farming is fundamental to our identity as a species, and it is crucial to the health and well-being of our communities.  But the way that we eat fuels the 21st-century challenges that threaten our way of life. How do we resolve this dilemma?”

Lengnick’s book draws on the adaptation stories of 25 award-winning sustainable U.S. producers of vegetables, fruits and nuts, grains, and livestock to find answers to this question. The book features local livestock farmer and retired SUNY Cobleskill faculty member Jim Hayes.

“These producers, many of them third- or fourth-generation farmers and ranchers, have managed sustainable businesses in the same location for 25 to more than 40 years,” Lengnick said, “Since about 2000, most have experienced increased challenges associated with more variable weather and more frequent and intense weather extremes.” Lengnick discovered that these producers are innovating new strategies of sustainable agriculture to reduce climate risk and cultivate resilience on their farms and ranches and in the communities they serve.

Laura Lengnick is an award-winning soil scientist who has explored agricultural sustainability for more than 30 years as a researcher, policy-maker, educator, and farmer. Her work in sustainable farming systems was nationally-recognized with a USDA Secretary’s Honor Award and she contributed to the 3rd National Climate Assessment as a lead author of the USDA report Climate Change and U.S. Agriculture: Effects and Adaptation.

Laura led the academic program in sustainable agriculture at Warren Wilson College for more than a decade, where she also served as the Director of Sustainability Education, and taught courses featuring agroecology, change leadership, whole farm planning with holistic management, sustainability assessment, and sustainable decision-making. In 2015, Laura left the college to launch Cultivating Resilience, LLC, a private consulting firm offering ecosystem-based climate risk management services to government, business, and communities.  She serves as an advisor to the USDA Climate Science Learning Network, NC Adapt, and the North American Climate Smart Agriculture Alliance. She holds an adjunct faculty position in Horticulture at North Carolina State University.

Laura Lengnick’s visit to SUNY Cobleskill will precede and complement a presentation at the annual Farmers’ Museum Conference on Food & Farming in Cooperstown, where she is being sponsored by SUNY Cobleskill as the keynote speaker. This year’s conference is titled “Climate Change & Its Impact on Farming in Central New York”.

During her visit, Lengnick will meet with SUNY Cobleskill students in their classes for conversations about sustainable agriculture. Her book, Resilient Agriculture: Cultivating Food Systems for a Changing Climate, will be available in the SUNY Cobleskill bookstore and Lengnick will be signing copies.

Schedule for Thursday, Nov. 3:

5 p.m. - Book signing at Farm Fresh Café in Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources

6 p.m. - Lecture in Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources 101

7 - 8 p.m. - Book signing reception at Farm Fresh Café in Center for Agriculture and Natural Resources

Tague: Zicha Site Figures Inaccurate, Believes Site Could Open Economic Opportunities

Written By Editor on 10/24/16 | 10/24/16

Last night we were contacted by Schoharie Supervisor Chris Tague about our article Saturday regarding potential jail sites. He emailed us several updates on the project, including updated estimates regarding costs.

In our article we cited figures from Flood Recovery Manager Bill Cherry's October 3rd letter to the members of the Buildings and Purchases Committee and Law Enforcement Committee. In our piece, we wrote, "Water lines would need to be extended either from Schoharie four miles away or five to six miles from Cobleskill. Sewer lines may be extended one mile from Central Bridge depending on capacity. It is currently unknown if the site is still for sale."

Supervisor Tague sent us an email from October 17th, in which he cites information from Jack McDonald, the engineer of record for the Cobleskill to Howes Cave water system and the Central Bridge Water and Sewer District. McDonald's estimate is that running water from the corner of Route 7 and Zicha Road, a distance of 3.8 miles, would cost $2.9 million. McDonald stated that a one mile extension from Central Bridge would cost approximately $686,000. Tague called either "a cheap investment in the possibility of serious economic development to benefit the entire county down the Route 7 Corridor."

For Tague, this is the best possible location for the jail as it is near access points to the Capital District and near the courthouse in Schoharie. He cites the fact that the Central Bridge sewer system is new and the District recently received $5 million in grants for projects expected done by the end of 2017.

SUNY Cobleskill Unveils Budget and Enrollment Projections

Written By Editor on 9/17/16 | 9/17/16

By Tyler James

SUNY Cobleskill President Marion Terenzio unveiled a look at SUNY Cobleskill’s budget and enrollment figures and projections. The new President plans a number of reforms to increase student retention and improve student services. Dr. Terenzio sent her thoughts in a letter to campus faculty and staff.

The efforts are part of the efforts to make SUNY Cobleskill a Destination College. In the letter, President Terenzio states that the college is part way on its path to this goal.

Cobleskill’s budget was described as “shrinking” and affecting parts of the college’s functions. Overall, the college’s enrollment has fallen 9% since 2014. Of all college revenue, 21% comes from state support. This percentage is projected to decline. Tuition represents 47% of all revenues, which is expected to increase as the college implements its strategies.

The college has been able to increase its returning students in the next year with slight declines in transfers and freshman students as seen below.

As a result of these cumulative factors the 2016-2017 is $1 million lower than the previous year. Tuition received in the 2015-2016 was a half million under projections. Tuition rates for students did not increase this year. Original projections factored in such an increase.

Terenzio lauded an effort by faculty and staff to quantify student concerns and aid in convincing students to return. Offices on campus cooperated on this endeavor. This reduced red tape and paperwork for students before they began classes in August.

The president ran down issues that affected decision making and budgeting. This included the fact that 80% of all funds go to personnel costs and 10% for utilities. Only about $2.5 million of the budget can be actively changed.

Dr. Terenzio outlined a series of proposals to aid the school’s budget. These included working with other organizations to share costs and expanding credentialing. The school also seeks to develop summer programs, including cooperation with local groups and camps. Cobleskill also looks to expand and refine its marketing efforts. The President requested an expansion of programs for students, including online coursework.

Seward: Turn on Natural Gas in Cobleskill

Written By Cicero on 4/27/15 | 4/27/15

ONEONTA, 04/27/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) is urging the New York State Department of Public Service to act quickly on a request from New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) to extend natural gas service within the Village of Cobleskill.

“Affordable energy can be a true game-changer when it comes to attracting new businesses and jobs to our region,” said Senator Seward.  “By extending a natural gas line within downtown Cobleskill, current employers and new businesses, along with residential customers, will all benefit.”

Due to a quirk in NYSEG’s franchise, a portion of the village’s center, including the theater and the developing Bull’s Head Inn, is without access to natural gas.  NYSEG is seeking to extend its line to the un-served village center.

In a letter to NYS Department of Public Service Secretary Kathleen Burgess, Senator Seward also expressed the importance of a quick approval, “Further, I am asking that the case be placed on an expedited timetable so that construction of facilities as contemplated in the application can be coordinated with a pending state Department of Transportation street project within the village and the subject area.  Timely approval would avoid the unnecessary and costly reconstruction of newly installed road improvements planned for the 2015 DOT project.  Therefore, time is of the essence.”

The NYSEG extension would connect to an existing gas main.  If approval is received by July or early August, NYSEG will be able to work in conjunction with a planned road widening project.

According to NYSEG, there are approximately 25 potential customers along the proposed gas main extension route.  Company officials expect to connect 12 residential and 3 commercial customers during the first year.

“Downtown Cobleskill has so much to offer, great shops and restaurants, a diverse population, and a welcoming atmosphere.  Extending natural gas to Main Street and Park Place will further enhance the marketability of the area and pay dividends for years to come.” Seward concluded.

Opinion: Build the Bridge

Written By Cicero on 4/24/15 | 4/24/15

For two months the Schoharie County Board of Supervisors has heard public comments and concerns on the proposed rebuilding of the Shady Tree Lane Bridge in the Town of Cobleskill.

Currently, the old structure stands as a useless span of rusted and unsafe metal from Barnerville Road to Shady Tree Lane, a visual reminder of the cost of government inaction almost seven years after the bridge was closed.

Some residents and supervisors are opposed to the new bridge because it would require the county to use the unpopular process of eminent domain, while others question the need to replace the structure altogether.

Supporters of the project have urged the county to move forward to reduce the time it takes emergency responders to reach Barnerville Road, which has been cut off before by train to both fire and ambulance squads.

Countless residents, many of whom are elderly, have personally testified to the dangers of not having this bridge in place, because minutes re-routing responders in an emergency situation could be the difference between life and death.

Not only that, but if the county does not move forward with the project it will cost local taxpayers approximately $400,000 in grants the county will be responsible to pay back. An additional tax burden we simply cannot afford.

Ultimately, when you look at the affected residents on either side of the creek, the only individuals opposed are those who will lose portions of their property. We sympathize with them, but there is a greater good to consider.

Take for instance the following example: say one of their elderly neighbors on Barnerville Road has a heart attack and a train is just then passing by, delaying emergency responders for five minutes and resulting in that neighbor's death.

A death that could be prevented by the construction of this new bridge. That is why, in this case, we favor the county's use of eminent domain and the immediate building of the Shady Tree Lane Bridge project to occur as soon as possible.

The Best of the Summer
