Holbert Named Athlete of the Week

The SUNY Cobleskill Department of Sport & Exercise announced today that junior Mackenzie Holbert, Sauquoit, N.Y., New Hartford High School/Herkimer Community College, a member of the women’s volleyball team has been named the athletic program’s Fighting Tiger Athlete-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday October 15th. This marks the second time this season Holbert has earned the award.

The junior setting helped the Fighting Tigers split a pair of North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) matches hosted by Gallaudet University in Washington, D.C. on Saturday. Cobleskill defeated the Phoenix of Wilson College 3-2 by scores of 15-25, 25-16, 25-19, 10-25 and 16-14, before losing to the host Bison of Gallaudet 3-0 by scores of: 25-7, 25-12 and 25-15.

Holbert led the way to victory over Wilson with 16 assists, 12 digs and three service aces then in the loss to Gallaudet had a strong effort with six assists and nine digs.

This season the Sauquoit, N.Y. native has averaged: 3.74 assists, 2.62 digs, 1.04 kills and 0.68 service aces per set in 72 appearances this season.

The Fighting Tigers, who currently boast a 8-11 overall record on the season including a 2-5 mark in NEAC play, will return to action on Thursday October 19th when they travel to Bennington, Vt. to meet the Mountaineers of Southern Vermont College with first serve scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Fundraiser for Puerto Rico at Heather Ridge Farm

PRESTON HOLLOW, NY: “Fiesta Boricua,” or Puerto Rican Gathering, will be an authentic Puerto Rican food buffet and a benefit auction to help to raise funds that are desperately needed in hurricane-ravaged Puerto Rico. The festivities will be at Heather Ridge Farm, Saturday, October 21, starting at 12 noon.

Guest chef Robert Lugo will create the Puerto Rican food buffet to be served at the Bees Knees Café on the farm. Cost will be $30 adult. All the labor and food is donated by the Bees Knees Café at Heather Ridge Farm, and Robert and Janice Lugo. Traditional items like Arroz con Gandulas (Rice with Pigeon Peas), Pernil al Horno (Roasted Pork Shoulder), Empanadillas Boricua (Puerto Rican Beef Turnovers) and Tembleque (Coconut Custard) are among the many dishes. John O'Connor at Bright Hill

In 1983, while living in Seattle, John O'Connor sent a batch of his songs off to Flying Fish Records cold and -- almost unheard of in the music business at that time -- landed a contract to make an album of his powerful original songs. Songs For Our Times came out in 1984 and was named one of the best albums of the year by the Washington Post and several folk publications and radio stations.

O'Connor's music has always been inseparable from his involvement in working class politics. He began his involvement in the labor movement right out of high school when he went to work in the factories of Waterloo, Iowa. An interest in folk music and Woody Guthrie led to a 30-year career as a folk singer and a cultural educator, performing in concerts, coffeehouses, schools and colleges, union education programs, and political action events.

He recorded three albums with Flying Fish Records, one of them with the political quartet, 'Shays Rebellion', and a CD on the Chroma label. He also recorded a CD produced in conjunction with Collector Records called "We Ain't Gonna Give It Back", which is regarded by many as one of the best collections of original songs on the American labor movement. The late Joe Glazer said of John, "He writes the best songs about labor you are likely to hear." The St. Paul Pioneer Press Dispatch said of John's music that it is "songwriting...right out of the same well that slaked Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger," while Britain's Southern Rag has said that "John O'Connor deserves to be numbered with the all-time greats of contemporary folk music."

Some 40 years after walking through the gates of his first factory job, O'Connor is still stalwart in his focus of fighting for the working class and inspiring them with his music and their music. He has traveled the U.S. performing for labor education classes, high schools, colleges and folk audiences. His powerful songs have always, as Tony Harrah of the Guardian said, "mixed seamlessly with the old songs." John's songs have been recorded by numerous singers from around the world. In 2009, the French topical singer, Renaud, adapted and recorded O'Connor's song of deindustrialization, North by North, which went to number one on the French charts.

O'Connor is also an accomplished poet, publishing his emotionally-charged poems in dozens of literary magazines and journals. He has won the Associated Writer's Program's Prague Prize and has been nominated twice for a Pushcart Prize. His book of poems, Half the Truth, won the Violet Reed Haas Poetry Award in 2015.

Cobleskill Men's Soccer Draws With Sage

Albany, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team returned to action on Wednesday evening engaging in a 0-0 non-conference double overtime tie on the road to the host Gators of Sage College in a hard hitting affair played on the turf at the Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences Athletic Complex. With the tie the Fighting Tigers move to 3-8-1 overall on the campaign while the Gators are now 7-4-1 overall on the season to date.

Fighting Tiger freshman goalkeeper Sam Sherbacow, Minneola, Fla., Lake Mineola High School, was spectacular in the net for Cobleskill with eight saves none bigger thaN a diving two-handed deflection with 2:00 remaining in the second overtime that preserved the tie for the visitors. Sherbacow also directed the team’s defense which turned away Sage on 11 corner kick opportunities on the evening.

Cobleskill will return to North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action on Saturday October 14 when they host The Express of Wells College in league play at the Soccer/Lax Complex beginning at 1:00 p.m.

October 13 Declared “Seen Enough Tobacco Day” in NYS

New York State Reality Check youth declared October 13 as the first ever “Seen Enough Tobacco Day”. The designated tobacco-free day, which will become an annual observance in the state, is an effort to help raise awareness and encourage community members to stand up to eliminate tobacco marketing and advertising in places where youth can see them.

Locally Reality Check youth advocates recorded radio messages that WIOX (Roxbury) and WSDE (Cobleskill) aired to educate community members about the need to reduce tobacco marketing’s influence on youth. They also posted a series of educational lawn signs and pinwheels in Veterans Memorial Centre Park in the Village of Cobleskill, Timothy Murphy Park in the Village of Middleburgh and Veteran’s Park in the Village of Stamford further highlighting tobacco issues to the public and shared photos of the lawn signs on social media using #SeenEnoughTobacco. Parents, community leaders and others interested in protecting youth continue to be encouraged to sign the Seen Enough Tobacco online petition at www.SeenEnoughTobacco.org to pledge their support.

“Reality Check is a group of teens all around New York State who work to expose the manipulative and deceptive marketing tactics of the tobacco industry,” said Ahna Misiewicz, a Reality Check youth advocate from Cherry Valley-Springfield Central School. “It’s hard to believe that tobacco companies spend an estimated 9.6 billion dollars a year to advertise and promote cigarettes and smokeless tobacco. That’s $602,000 every day in New York State.”

According to Ava Valetutto, a Reality Check youth advocate from Sharon Springs Central School, “The average age of a new smoker is 13 and we know that tobacco marketing causes young people to start smoking. Just ask the U.S. Surgeon General. That’s why we are fighting against the tobacco industry’s influence on youth.”

“As young people, we are vulnerable, and tobacco industry marketing takes advantage of that. For example, stores popular among adolescents contain almost three times more tobacco marketing materials compared to other stores in the same community,” said Brea Fyfe, a Reality Check youth advocate from the Oneonta Community Christian School.

Jasmine Neill, another Cherry Valley Reality Check member added, “We’ve seen enough tobacco marketing. We need to make changes in our communities so that smoking is not the norm and we can build tobacco-free generations.”

Reality Check empowers youth to become leaders in their communities in exposing the influence of tobacco industry marketing on youth tobacco use. The organization’s members produce change in their communities through grassroots mobilization and education. Reality Check in Delaware, Otsego and Schoharie Counties is the youth action component of Advancing Tobacco Free Communities (ATFC-DOS). Ms. Regina Haig is the Reality Check/Youth Engagement Program Coordinator with ATFC-DOS.

ATFC-DOS educates the community and decision makers, mobilizes community members around problems that tobacco addiction causes in local communities, and helps decision makers understand the types of choices that they have to address these problems. Efforts are evidence-based, policy-driven and cost effective approaches that decrease youth tobacco use, motivate adult smokers to quit and eliminate exposure to secondhand smoke. Man Arrested for For First Degree Rape in Sharon

On October 11, 2017 the New York State Police - Bureau of Criminal Investigation SP Princetown arrested Joshua A. Wample, age 35 of Aldie, Virginia for Rape 1st degree.

On June 15, 2017 SP Princetown received a complaint regarding the possible sexual assault of a female victim in the Town of Sharon. During the course of the investigation multiple interviews were conducted as well as evidence collected which led to the arrest of Wample. Wample was arrested for Rape 1st degree (B-Felony).

Wample was arraigned in Schoharie County court and released on a $60,000 bail bond with a future court date scheduled.

Congressional Candidate Clegg Raises Over $200k

(Kingston, NY): Today, NY19 Democratic Congressional candidate Dave Clegg
announced that he raised over $220,000 in his first quarter in the race
against John Faso. Clegg, a 30+ year resident of Ulster County and
long-time community leader, has about $180,000 on hand as he begins his
campaign for the Democratic nomination.

“John Faso first voted to make healthcare unaffordable for more than 20
million Americans and now his party is trying to jam through tax cuts for
the top 1%,” said Clegg. “It’s time we stood up for the little guy again
and focus on growing our economy so that it works for everyone.”

A Woodstock homeowner, Dave Clegg is the only Democratic candidate who has
lived in the district for the last 35 years. In the few short months since
announcing, he has activated a grassroots army of supporters thanks to his
deep roots and years of activism in the Hudson Valley community.

David Clegg has worked for civil rights and economic justice as an
attorney for nearly 40 years. He is also an ordained Deacon in the
Methodist church and serves as chair of the Ulster County Human Rights
Commission. He also serves on the boards of Family of Woodstock, Midtown
Rising, and Caring Hands Soup Kitchen.

Women's Soccer Loses 2-0

North Adams, Mass.: The SUNY Cobleskill women’s soccer team once again found the road to be a rough place as the Fighting Tigers dropped a hard fought 2-0 to the host Trailblazers of Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) in non-league action on Wednesday night. With the loss the Fighting Tigers fall to 0-9 overall on the season while MCLA moves to 1-8 overall.
Sophomore goalkeeper Samantha Springstead, Staten Island, N.Y., Notre Dame Academy, spearheaded a Fighting Tiger defensive effort that employed a bend but don’ t break tenacity throughout the evening. The Notre Dame Academy alumnus recorded a game high of 15 saves as the Orange & Black weathered a Trailblazer attack that posted 39 shots and eight corner kicks on the night.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday October 7th when they host the Bison of Gallaudet University in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action beginning at 3:00 p.m.

Cobleskill Volleyball Falls to Hartwick

Oneonta, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women’s volleyball team took to the once again took to the road on Wednesday evening traveling to Hartwick College to drop a 3-0 decision to the host Hawks by set scores of: 25-15, 25-14 and 25-11 in non-conference action. With the blank the Fighting Tigers move to 5-10 overall while the Hawks are now 9-8 on the year.

Freshman middle hitter Karyn Knaul, Central Square, N.Y., Paul V. Moore High School, posted a team high of five kills to go with a pair of solo blocks for Cobleskill while sophomore outside hitter Emily Potter, Fort Plain, N.Y., Fort Plain High School, continued her strong season with four kills, 14 digs and an assist on the evening.

The Orange & Black will return to action on Thursday October 5th when they host Cazenovia College in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) play with first serve at 7:00 p.m.

Fighting Tiger Weekly Recap

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s cross country team posted a team score of 88 points to out distance and claim victory over a 34-team field at the 2017 Mount Saint Mary’s College Invitational hosted by the Blue Knights at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton, N.Y.on Saturday. The Fighting Tigers were led by senior Anthony Bouchard, Wantagh, N.Y. Wantagh High School, who placed eighth overall in a field of 220 runners by covering the soggy 8000-meter course in a time of 28:07 seconds.

The Fighting Tiger men’s golf team closed the 2017 portion of their schedule on a pair of high notes this week taking second place in a six-team field with a score of 39-over par 327 at the 2017 Elmira College Fall Invitational on Tuesday at the par 72/6747 yard Elmira Country Club then taking the team title at the 2017 Paul Smith’s College Invitational on Saturday at the par 72.6377 yard Saranac Inn Golf & Country Club with a season best score of 23-over par 311 to earn the top spot in a four-team field. Junior Cody Latimer, Mayville, N.Y., Chautauqua Lake High School/Jamestown Community College, was the team’s top finisher tying for third place at Elmira with a round of seven-over par 79 before winning at Paul Smith’s with a team individual season best effort of two-under par 70.

Junior Quinn Porter, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake High School, led the Fighting Tiger women’s cross country team to a score of 197 points and a sixth place finish in a field of 31 teams at the 2017 Mount Saint Mary’s College Invitational hosted by the Blue Knights at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton, N.Y. on Saturday. Porter placed sixth overall in the field of 199 runners by covering the soggy 6000-meter loop in a time of 25:26 for Cobleskill.

Competing as an individual Fighting Tiger senior women’s golfer Tracy Anderson, Johnsonville, N.Y., Hoosic Valley High School, closed out the fall season with a pair of solid efforts. On Tuesday Anderson fired a round of 25-over par 97 to finish in fourth place at the 2017 Elmira College Invitational hosted by Elmira at the par 72/6692 yard Elmira Country Club then on Saturday the Johnsonville, N.Y. native came back to finish third overall at the 2017 Paul Smith's College Invitational hosted by the Bobcats at the par 72/6377 yard Saranac Inn Golf & Country Club with a round of 23-over-par 95.

The women’s volleyball team took one-of-three matches during the week coming back to defeat the Raptors of Bard College at home on Wednesday night 3-2 by scores of 19-25, 25-12, 17-25, 25-23 and 15-10 then losing on the road on Saturday in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action at Penn College to the host Wildcats 3-1 by scores of 23-25, 23-25, 25-14 and 22-25 and in non-league play to Gwynedd Mercy College 3-1 by scores of 17-25, 14-25, 25-23 and 19-25 to move to5-9 overall including a 0-4 mark in NEAC contests. Fighting Tiger junior setter McKenzie Holbert, Sauquoit, N.Y., New Hartford High School/Herkimer Community College, averaged: 2:46 assists, 2.31 digs, 0,85 kills and 0.92 aces in 13 sets played during the week.

The men’s soccer team took to the road on Wednesday to drop a NEAC contest to the host Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic Institute by a 2-0 margin in Marcy, N.Y. The loss drops the Fighting Tigers to 2-7 overall including a 0-2 record in league play.

The women’s soccer team lost twice during the week falling on the road Wednesdayevening to NEAC rival SUNY Polytechnic Institute on Wednesday evening 12-0 then falling to Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences 8-0 at home on Saturday. With the losses the Fighting Tigers fall to 0-8 overall including a 0-2 record in conference action.

Bouchard Named Runner of the Week

GANSEVOORT, N.Y. – The North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) announced today that for the SUNY Cobleskill senior Anthony Bouchard, Wantagh, N.Y., Wantagh High School, has been named the league’s Men’s Cross Country Runner-of-the-Week for the week ending Sunday, October 1st. This marks the second time this season the Cobleskill senior has been honored as been honored by the conference with the award.

The Fighting Tiger senior placed eighth overall in a field of 220 runners at the 2017 Mount Saint Mary’s College Invitational hosted by Blue Knights at the Hudson Valley Sports Dome in Milton, N.Y. on Saturday afternoon covering the soggy 8000 meter course in a time of 28:07. Led by Bouchard, Cobleskill posted a team score of 88 points to claim event’s team title over a 34-team field.
Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday October 14th when they travel to Poultney, Vt. to compete at the 2017 Green Mountain College Invitational hosted by the Mountaineers on their campus cross country course beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Cobleskill Women's Soccer Loses to Poly

Marcy, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women’s soccer team’s road woes continued on Wednesday evening as the Fighting Tigers dropped a 12-0 decision to the Wildcats of SUNY Polytechnic Institute in North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) action. The loss drops Cobleskill to 0-7 overall with a 0-2 mark in league play while the Wildcats improve to 5-1 overall with a 2-0 record in conference play.
Cobleskill once again had trouble keeping the ball in the opposition’s side of the field as the Fighting Tigers’ defense allowed the Wildcats 51 shots and eight corner kicks on the evening.
The Orange & Black will next be in action on Saturday September 30th when they host the Panthers of Albany College of Pharmacy & Health Sciences at the Soccer/Lax Complex with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Cobleskill Men's Soccer Blanked by Polytechnic

Marcy, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team took to the road on Wednesday evening for a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) meeting with the Wildcats SUNY Polytechnic Institute at Wildcats Field. Battling the heat as well as the Wildcats the Fighting Tigers dropped a 2-0 road decision to the Wildcats to fall to 2-7 overall with a 0-2 mark in league play while SUNY Polytechnic is now 3-5 overall with a 1-1 record versus NEAC opponents.

After a scoreless first half the host Wildcats struck twice in the second half to secure the victory limiting the Orange & Black to only six shots and one corner kick in the contest.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Saturday October 7th when they host the Bison of Gallaudet University at the Soccer/Lax Complex with kick-off scheduled for 1:00 p.m.

Fashion Show To Raise Funds To Support 75 Families at Christmas

The Catskill Ladies Association to Support & Inspire (CLASI) and SUNY Delhi’s Omicron Xi Omega (OXO) sorority are hosting a Fashion Show on Sunday, October 22 at SUNY Delhi. The Fashion show will help to raise funds for the Delhi Children’s Christmas Fund, an organization that provide gifts and food for families in need during the holiday season. Each year, the Fund supports around 75 families in the Delaware Academy School District.

Models will walk the runway in the Farrell Commons at SUNY Delhi, in the very versatile LuLaRoe attire with accessories from Thirty-One Gifts and jewelry from Lori Henry. Raffle tickets will be available for a chance to win some of the beautiful baskets that will also be available. In addition to watching the colorful clothing on the catwalk, attendees will get go shopping for their favorite LuLa Roe outfit, jewelry, Thirty-One accessories and Mary Kay make-up.

“We’re excited to host the first CLASI Fashion Show to help put smiles on children’s face all across the area on Christmas morning” says event co-chair Hope Knapp. “The Fashion Show will be an opportunity to see unique fashions sold by area consultants” continues Hope. Doors to the event will open at 12:30 p.m., with lunch being served at 1:00 p.m., and the Fashion Show to begin at 2 p.m. Tickets are on sale for $25 each, and all the proceeds from the event will go the Delhi Children’s Christmas Fund. Fatal Accident in Stamford

At approximately 12:30 a.m. on Monday morning, September 25, 2017, Delaware
County Sheriff’s Deputies and members of the Stamford, Hobart and Jefferson Fire
Departments and Emergency Squads responded to a report of a fatal all-terrain vehicle
accident on a riding trail in Town of Stamford.

The accident was discovered and reported by other ATV riders who happened upon the
accident while riding in the area.

Preliminary investigation by Deputies revealed that Daniel P. Reed, 27, of Stamford, was
riding a side-by- side utility vehicle when he lost control of the vehicle which
subsequently overturned. Reed, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the
vehicle and suffered fatal injuries.

Although the investigation into the accident is ongoing, Deputies believe excessive speed
and failure to wear a seat belt were contributing factor.
