American Legion Bunt-Brewer Post 165 Reinstates Auxiliary

By Max Oppen

TANNERSVILLE — The American Legion Bunt-Brewer Post 165 has reinstated its Auxiliary after an approximately five-year absence. Notably, the Auxiliary is no longer referred to as the "Women's Auxiliary" and is now open to all direct family members of veterans, regardless of gender. This inclusive approach allows grandparents, parents, siblings, and children of veterans to join the Auxiliary.

According to James Jones, the Commander of American Legion Bunt-Brewer Post 165, the Auxiliary has also introduced a "Junior League" that welcomes children with no minimum age requirement. Jones shared that his 9-year-old granddaughter eagerly awaits joining the Junior League.

Members of the Junior League actively participate in decision-making processes by voting on positions such as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary. Both the Auxiliary and the Junior Auxiliary require ten members each to function.

The Auxiliary collaborates closely with and supports the American Legion, contributing to community events primarily focused on fundraising. Activities include bake sales, tag sales, dinners, cook-offs, and involving local Middle/High School students in writing holiday cards to enlisted military personnel.

The decision to reinstate the Auxiliary comes after it ceased operations due to a lack of membership in previous years. Commander Jones expressed his hope that by extending eligibility to men and children, community participation will see a significant boost.

An upcoming April meeting, led by the President of the Greene County Auxiliary, will cover guidelines for members and potential members. Additionally, Jones is actively planning a chili cook-off in April to engage and involve the community further.

More information, including membership applications, can be found on the American Legion Bunt-Brewer Post 165 website post165.godaddysites.com. Emphasizing the importance of the Auxiliary, Jones stated, "We need to let people know we exist. The Auxiliary is a vital part of the American Legion. Without their support, it's difficult to maintain and support our veterans."
