Obituary - Alfred “Al” C. Hess

Alfred “Al” C. Hess, 92, passed away peacefully at home in Conesville on Thursday, January 11, 2024. 

Al was born on April 23, 1931 in Philadelphia, PA., spending much of his life in northern New Jersey and the last 30 years in Conesville, NY. The story of Al’s life was family and community service.  His life in Cresskill, New Jersey was defined by Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Santa Claus, parades and the Easter bunny. He also served in the Cresskill OEM.  

His service in the Fire Department began at the age of 19 and resumed for more than 25 years with the Conesville Fire Department and Rescue Squad.  He served as president of the Schoharie County Fire Police and past president and member of the Mountain Top Seniors Citizens Club.  Al was awarded the Silver Beaver for his work in Scouting and proudly served his country in the United States Navy, during the Korean War from 1950-1954 and member and past Commander of the Susquehanna Trails American Legion Post # 1764. 

Al was predeceased by his eldest son: Alfred D. Hess.  A life well lived, Al will be remembered and mourned by many including his wife of 66 years, Irene (Welenc) Hess; his sons: Steven and his wife Amanda Hess, Matthew and his wife Sherri Hess and adopted son Ed Stern; his daughter-in-law: Susan Hess; his grandchildren: Alfred E., Kristen and her fiancé Nick Deen, Isaac and his wife Samantha.  

Al’s family would also like to express their gratitude to Helios for their compassionate help and knowledge with his homecare. 

All are invited to a visitation with Al’s family from 5:00-7:00PM on Wednesday, January 17, 2023 at Coltrain Funeral Home, LLC 134 River Street, Middleburgh. A funeral service will be held at 11:00AM on Thursday, January 18, 2024 also at the funeral home. Cremation will take place following the funeral service and interment will be private at the family’s convenience.
