In the past I have continued to stress that veterans should use the VFW Service Officers for their disability claims.
Even if you are not a member of the VFW. VFW’s accredited service officers undergo extensive training each year and are held to a higher standard than required by the VA.
It is why the free service offered by VFW’s 2,000 service officers is so valued. Twice a year hundreds of VFW accredited service officers from around the world attend a week-long course in Annapolis, Md.
The training is important for all service officers to be up to date on VA policy changes or new laws passed regarding veterans’ benefits.
Should you have any questions regarding your benefits, please contact me at vfwpost1545@gmail.com or contact the Department of NY VFW in Albany, NY for information.
Should you choose to go to a lawyer that will work on your claim, be advised that they take a portion of your settlement as their fee.
I am always on the lookout for veterans who qualify for membership in the VFW. At our Post we desperately need new members to carry on the legacy of our Post.
I often am told that “I don’t have time” in my life to join. Personally, I had an attitude that “I wasn’t welcome when I came home”, so I just never gave joining any value.
That changed when I was approached by our then-commander and talked it over with my wife and father-in-law.
My father-in-law was a WWII veteran and a member of the VFW, and they convinced me to join. To my amazement I was welcomed at the Post. I have since enjoyed valuable friendships.
One thing that makes being a member so fulfilling is helping other veterans, giving back to the community.
The feeling of continuing serving, camaraderie and doing what is right for me. I am proud now of being a veteran and helping others.
Until you do it, you will never know that feeling. So many of our members are not active in our Post and we really need them to be a bit more active in our mission.
I remember one time, at a meeting, it was brought up that we had a good time in the kitchen during Bingo night, making hot dogs etc.
Afterwards a few members who came that night were surprised that they also had laughs and a good time. Sometimes I wonder if I personally offended anyone who just doesn’t participate anymore.
We hold one meeting a month that lasts about an hour (no soul saved after an hour) which isn’t too much of a drain on anyone’s social calendar.
So, if you are a member and have not been to a meeting in a while, try to make a meeting and make a difference.
I want to point out that we will be having a pancake breakfast on Saturday February 17 from 8 a.m. ’til noon with bacon, sausage, fruit, coffee and juice. It could be a late Valentines present to get out and have breakfast.
Please remember our troops still serving and keep them safe. God Bless America.
Marc Farmilette, PDC – Commander Post 1545.
