Movers: Amy Ritter Art Installation in Pine Hill

By Robert Brune

PINE HILL — On Monday, installation artist and photographer Amy Ritter unveils, ‘Movers’, an art installation of two photographic cut-outs of herself in Pine Hill at The Ovid Gallery window space. The owner of Ovid Gallery, Wanda Siedlecka discovered Ritter’s work years ago in NYC while she was a resident artist at the Lower Manhattan Cultural Center (LMCC).

“These two figures represented in Ritter's work, Movers, portray the artist's struggle of feeling trapped within the labor and class restraints reflective of her upbringing in a low-income mobile home community. As one figure pushes to move forward the second figure acts like a wall preventing forward momentum.”

United Nations Human Rights Rapporteur and NYU Law Professor Philip Alston was generous enough to lend his expert opinion on the topic of poverty in America in relation to Ritter’s work, “Her photographs are a wonderful tribute to the everyday lives and challenges of millions of Americans, and a call to the rest of us to actually do something about the housing crisis that will, in the years ahead, cause untold misery if left unaddressed.”

The next issue of the Mountain Eagle will feature Prof Alston’s review along with a full profile of Ritter’s art practice. A solo exhibition of her work will be up at Art Up Gallery in Margaretville opening Friday, May 3 rd – May 26 th.
