STAMFORD – The Edmeston boys defeated South Kortright in second-round action and the Unatego/Franklin boys knocked off host Jefferson/Stamford to advance to the championship round of the Stamford Mayor's Cup Soccer Tournament. Unatego/Franklin is the defending champion. The boys championship game is set for 5 p.m. at Russ Archibald Memorial Field in Stamford this Saturday, Sept. 14.
On the girls' coin, the South Kortright Lady Rams will take on Schenevus, with the girls' championship game set for 6:45 p.m. as the final game of the tournament.
Second-round games were played at two other schools this past Saturday to avoid rainy weather and the chance of making Archibald Field unplayable, due to the number of games scheduled. Mike Brown, at Stamford Central, who organized this year's tournament thanked those who helped him add places to play the games and get the scheduling completed without it turning into a nightmare. The tournament finishes this Saturday with the championship and consolation rounds.
BOYS ACTION
Edmeston defeated SK 6-3 after advancing on penalty kicks after a 2-2 tie with Roxbury/Gilboa in their opener last Tuesday.
The Rams had Edmeston down 2-0 early, but the Panthers retaliated and battled back to tie it and go on for the win. Gavin McEnroe connected on a pair of goals and teammates Camden Graham and Brock Redner added one goal and an assist each. Sam Bolton and Max Bolton added single goals to the win. JB Trimbell scored the two goals that put the Rams in the lead early, and the third goal was a miscue by Edmeston.
Unatego/Franklin got a pair of goals from Jake Kingsbury and Rashad Kiel added another goal as in their 3-1 victory over Jefferson Stamford. John Leas scored J/S's lone goal.
On Wednesday U/F shutout Schenevus 3-0 as Kingsbury netted a hat trick to lead the cause.
J/S defeated the new team in the tournament, Mekeel Christian, 1-0 in the opening round on Wednesday. Will Eklund scored on a direct kick with 15 minutes to go in the game to end aa 0-0 tie. Eklund took the rebound from the goalie and netted the game-winner. S/J will be paired with South Kortright in the consolation round at 1:30 p.m. on Sept. 14. at Archibald Field.
Laurens/Milford defeated Roxbury/Gilboa 5-3 in their second-round game. The game was moved to the Stamford school field. R/G got two goals from Roni Grieco and one from Burton Strauch with Donovan Firmen adding an assist as the loss took them out of the tournament.
In their second round, Mekeel Christian tied with Schenevus 2-2 on the field at Jefferson Central. Schenevus advanced 4-3 on penalty kicks. The loss took them out of the tournament.
L/M and Schenevus will play for the fifth-place spot at 10 a.m. this Saturday at Archibald Field.
GIRLS ACTION
An eighth-grader did most of the damage Saturday as SK/Andes defeated Franklin 5-1 in second round action to again take a seat in the championship game.
Jaylee Kelly scored four goals for SK and Madysen Reeves added one goal to lead the charge.
They advanced from the opening round with a 1-0 shutout over Laurens. Nora Trimbell scored with 10 minutes remaining in the game to give SK the win.
Franklin defeated Charlotte Valley 7-4 in its opening-round game. Kingsbury connected on five goals and assisted on another to lead Franklin. Daniella DeSilva and Leah Brower added one goal each to the win and DeSilva also had an assist. For Charlotte Valley, eighth grader Jordan Odell struck for two goals and one assist with Irene Cox adding two assists.
Charlotte Valley then shut out Laurens 2-0, and the game moved to South Kortright, to advance to the fifth place consolation round, set for 11:45 a.m. against host Jefferson/Stamford. Lila Waid combined with Odell, each scoring a goal in the win.
Franklin's advance puts them in the girls' consolation game where they will be paired against Gilboa/Roxbury at 3:15 p.m.. Gilboa/Roxbury fell to Schenevus 4-1 in Saturday's second-round game after advancing from their opener, 2-1 over the host team S/J. The game went into overtime. Olivia Ross scored both goals for Roxbury/Gilboa, including the overtime clincher. Hannah Kirby scored S/J's goal.
On Saturday, R/G's lone goal came off the foot of Chamille Sass, with an assist from Olivia Ross.
S/J won its second-round game, 2-0 over Margaretville on Saturday. The game was moved to Jefferson where Emma Smith and Abigail Vilaneuva each connected for a goal in the shutout.
