RAVENA – January 18, 2025 – Understanding Herman, an evocative photography exhibit by journalist and photographer Marlene McTigue, is now on display at the Ravena Coeymans Selkirk Community Library. Presented by Old-School Naturalist, the exhibit runs through February 28, 2025, and offers visitors a unique glimpse into the beauty of human-wildlife connections.

The collection tells the story of McTigue’s unexpected friendship with Herman, an injured but curious porcupine who visited her home during the summer of 2024. Through a series of close up photographs, the exhibit showcases Herman’s personality, quirks, and trust, reminding audiences that animals are individuals deserving of respect and kindness.

“Have you ever experienced the quiet joy of holding out a handful of birdseed and feeling the delicate touch of that one chickadee who will land on your hand to eat?” McTigue reflects in her artist statement. “Moments like these remind us that the creatures around us are more than just animals — they are individuals with unique personalities.”

McTigue’s bond with Herman began when she offered him a slice of apple, a small gesture that sparked a three-month friendship filled with daily visits and moments of trust. Understanding Herman chronicles this journey, offering a profound reminder to view the natural world with curiosity and care.

“Understanding Herman is about more than just Herman,” McTigue explains. “It’s about recognizing that every animal we encounter is an individual, deserving of kindness, respect, and understanding.”
