Margaretville Blue Devils Bring Home Delaware League Title

DELHI – The Margaretville Blue Devils brought home the Delaware League title last Thursday, defeating nine-year perennial champion South Kortright 57-46 at SUNY Delhi. SK was unable to defend its title for the tenth time.

Margaretville hasn't claimed the title in 12 years (2013), but had three men score in double figures to claim the trophy. Ryan Sanford led the charge with 25 points on the night and teammates Connor Wayman and Hunter Balcom chimed in another 15 and 12 points, respectively.

SK was led by JB Trimbell's 13 points and Lance McClure chimed in another 10 points in double figures. 

Margaretville went out to a 6-2 lead in a very low-scoring first quarter of play. They outscored SK 15-9 over the second quarter to take a 10-point lead into the half. They stretched the lead to 15 points heading into the final period where SK outscored them 23-19 but was unable to close the gap. It was the third time the two teams have played each other this year, with Margaretville coming out on top each time.

It is on to Section 4, Class D action where SK is again the defending champion, setting a record last year with three straight sectional titles. They are looking for a fourth straight sectional title.

However, Margaretville took the first place trophy and the championship trophy from the league, they are seeded number two in sectional play, behind top-seeded Edmeston, while SK is seeded sixth.

Gilboa/Roxbury defeated Gilbertsville-Mt. Upton 52-41 in the only first round game to advance to second round action against top-seeded Edmeston today at Edmonton.

Cody Ciaravino led GCRs win with 15 points on the night, while Jordan Johnston and Blake Albano chimed in another 12 points each. The win improved them to 9-12 on the season. GCR took a four-point first quarter lead and increased it to nine points by halftime. GMU gained back eight points from the deficit heading into the final quarter where GCR put in a 16-6 effort to bring home the win.

GMU/GCR winner at Edmeston 6 p.m.

Morris at Schenevus 6 p.m. 

SK at Worcester  6 p.m.

Stamford/Jefferson at Margaretville.


Semifinals are set for March 4, the times to be announced, at SUNY Delhi and finals are at 6 p.m. March 8 at SUNY Delhi
