Greenville’s Drive-In 32 presents QWERTY: Typewriter and the Letter Arts Festival Vol.5

Greenville’s Drive-In 32 Outdoor Cinema will be hosting its fifth QWERTY Typewriter & the Letter Arts Festival from September 22 through 26, 2021 both at the drive-in and at the Greenville Public Library.

QWERTY Vol. 5 will take a closer look at typography and its impact on culture through typewriter exhibits, workshops, films and a live performance by The Boston Typewriter Orchestra. All QWERTY events are open and free to the public. However, tickets are recommended and are available at www.drivein32.com.

“Since the first QWERTY in 2016, it was clear that the typewriter is still inspiring creativity and fun for visitors of all ages,” said Leigh Van Swall. “Each festival has been such an eye-opening and exciting experience for people, it is a highlight each season.”

To kick off QWERTY, Van Swall, who owns Greenville’s Drive-In 32 with her husband, Dwight Grimm, will host My TYPE of Film, at the Greenville Public Library on Wednesday, September 22 at 7 p.m. Van Swall will explore the diversity and impact of typeface relating to film. Participants will also have a chance to type their own haiku to be added to the poetry wall at the drive-in.

Shifting to Saturday, September 25 at 4 p.m., the QWERTY Typewriter Festival will take place at Greenville’s Drive-In 32 with a “type-in” featuring the typewriter collection of Erik Molbach as well as a Typewriter Evolution Exhibit in the snack bar, postcard station, raffle, and a performance by The Boston Typewriter Orchestra. The evening will end with a screening of the 2002 Steven Spielberg film “Catch Me If You Can,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. The film is rated PG-13.

Finishing the festival on Sunday, September 26 is the return screening of “Helvetica”; the 2007 documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture.

Although the typewriter may seem like a reminiscent device of generations past, QWERTY has invigorated it for the generations of the future.

Olivia M., 12, of Greenville has attended each QWERTY festival and recommends it to everyone.

“I learned to use a typewriter and I love them all because of QWERTY,” said Olivia. “I got to teach my little sister how to use one before she started kindergarten last year and I recommend that all kids type on a typewriter, it is a fun hobby for anyone.”

QWERTY Vol. 5 is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the New York State Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature and administered in Schoharie County by the Greene County Council on the Arts dba CREATE Council for Resources to Enrich the Arts, Technology and Education.

Children’s Art and Poetry Focused on Catskills Water at Water Discovery Center in Arkville Through October

September 3 (Arkville) Children’s artwork and poetry related to Catskills water, its journey to, and use in, New York City is on display at the Catskill Water Discovery Center, 669 Hwy 38, Arkville, Saturdays 12 - 3 through October, or by appointment, for groups and school classes. The exhibit features the winning entries of NYC DEP’s Water Resources Art and Poetry Contest. Inspired by contest themes, which incorporate STEM and humanities disciplines, the work addresses:

·         Water, A Precious Resource: To recognize the importance of a clean and plentiful supply of water.

·         New York City Water Supply System: To explore the history of the New York City’s Water Supply System and its present-day source, operation, delivery, protection and maintenance.

·         Water Stewardship and Climate Change: What can we do to help? To consider our influence on the environment and how we can address and take action on environmental issues that influence our neighborhoods, our city, and beyond.

The exhibit complements the Center’s permanent exhibition, a timeline history of the NYC Water Supply System, from the suitability of the Catskills to provide the country’s largest city with clean, abundant supplies of fresh water, to the sacrifices made by the local population, to the cooperation achieved by upstate and downstate leaders and advocates, yielding an unprecedented, unparalleled system.

Margaretville Hospital Now Offers Outpatient Opioid Addiction Care

Margaretville Hospital, a member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network (WMCHealth), recently launched a medication-assisted treatment program that helps prevent opioid overdose and assists individuals as they combat substance use disorder. The new program, with support from a grant from New York State’s Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS), initiates treatment with buprenorphine, a medication approved by the Food and Drug Administration for treating opioid use disorder as an adjuvant to counseling and other supportive services. After receiving a first dose, the patient is provided with options for follow-up services.
Administering Care for Recovery
Individuals seeking treatment can visit Margaretville Hospital’s Emergency Department at any time, day or night.  Trained staff will administer the first dose of buprenorphine and provide a prescription so the individual can continue treatment at home. Margaretville Hospital staff will also match patients to peer advocates and share options for follow up treatment, one of which is services offered through WMCHealth’s Kyle Goldberg Turning Point Outpatient Program.
“Medication-assisted treatment saves lives while increasing the likelihood of a patient staying in treatment, learning new skills and building the support needed for long-term recovery,” said Kenneth Oclatis, PhD, Director of WMCHealth’s Outpatient Behavioral Health Services. “Access to medication-assisted treatment in rural areas is often limited by a shortage of providers trained in addiction medicine, a lack of access to comprehensive addiction programs, and transportation obstacles. This program seeks to eliminate those barriers and enable patients to remain in their home by offering OASAS-approved telepractice follow-up services.  This is a much needed program for the area and we are excited to offer these new services to the community.”

Learn to Fly - F.L.Y. First Love Yourself by Sister Chirya

Written By Editor on 9/1/21 | 9/1/21

Become a self transformer and transform your thoughts and habits from negative to positive in a second with a powerful brake.  When we have negative or waste thoughts, their speed is fast.  We need to increase the practice of applying a powerful brake to slow down our thoughts in a second and bring about a change.
Why can't we change the pattern of our thoughts so easily?  Imagine being a baby bird so comfortable in the nest, it never wants to fly.  It doesn't realize it can fly and never realizes the blissful freedom of flight, never feels the wind through its wings. It thinks other birds flying around are unwise or foolish.  In much the same way, we never really leave our nests of old thought patterns. Our habitual thoughts become our comfort zone and each repetitive thought pattern is like a twig in the nest, making the nest stronger and our stay in the nest seemingly comfortable, safe and permanent.  We don't experience our true spiritual flight or freedom or feel the floating feeling of our inner beautiful nature.

No one is more capable of flying free than you are because the ability to change is within all of us, all the time.  The solution is to remind yourself you can fly free.  Where to begin?  Talk to yourself: "I can F.L.Y. -  First.Love.Yourself.".  Pause and experience the feeling.   We're most alive when we love ourselves.  This spiritual 'brake' of love makes us strong, makes us brave to 'break' our attachments of old thought forms. It's an act of courage and most refreshing.  With love I can change and fly no matter what happens.  My world is not only this nest in a tree; the whole world is my garden, my home.   I have removed  the twigs of old thought forms and spread my self confident wings of love and light.  Now I easily leave this nest of attachments as I am much wiser, stronger and stable, and fly free with the wind of positivity beneath my wings.  Above all, it is the essence of just one positive thought in one second that helps us quickly empower ourselves.  When we F.L.Y.  and consistently transform our thoughts from negative to positive, world transformation through our self transformation will be completed.  When I change, the world changes!
