The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team waited to literally the last second to pull out a 2-1 victory over the visiting Hornets of Northern Vermont University-Lyndon on Sunday afternoon in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action. The victory moves the Fighting Tigers to 2-6 overall on the season including a 1-2 mark in conference play while the Hornets fall to 1-6 overall with a 0-4 record in league action.
With the score tied at 1-1 with only two seconds remaining in regulation a Fighting Tiger corner kick off the right foot of junior midfielder Ben Kessler, East Northport, N.Y., St. Anthony’s High School, found high leaping sophomore midfielder Cater Ciavardoni, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, in the box who redirected the ball via a header weakside into the Hornets net with 0.6 seconds remaining to give the Orange & Black the victory.
The goal capped an otherwise frustrating offensive outing for the Fighting Tigers who had dominated the action throughout the contest outshooting the visitors by a 43-8 margin while holding an 11-4 advantage in corner kicks.
Cobleskill drew first blood when junior midfielder Jeremy Rossi, Westport, N.Y., Westport High School, headed in a deflected ball in the 22nd minute to stake the home team to a 1-0 which held up until the 36th minute of play when Hornet first-year forward Nick Trapp, Carmel, N.Y., Our Lady of Lourdes High School, intercepted a pass and scored to tie the contest.
From there the game remained tied until Kessler and Ciavardoni’s last second heroics.
The Fighting Tigers will next be in action on Wednesday September 29 when they travel to Saratoga Springs, N.Y. to face the Thoroughbreds of Skidmore College with kick-off at 7:00 p.m.
