Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team opened an extended nine-game home stand on Tuesday afternoon by dropping a non-league doubleheader with the Dutchwomen of Union College by scores of 5-0 and 11-3 at Fighting Tiger Park. With the defeats the Fighting Tigers are now 2-10 overall while Union is now 9-1 overall on the season to date.
In the opener the Fighting Tiger defense was touched for five runs in the third inning, three of which were unearned, which led to the Dutchwomen’s margin of victory as Union first year hurler Jessie Rooney, Hopewell Junction, N.Y., Deerfield Academy, allowed Cobleskill only two hits while striking out 13 and walking only two on the afternoon.
Sophomore first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.Y., Nashua High School, was 1-for-2 with a walk in the game while first-year pitcher Olivia DeMott, Sidney, N.Y., Sidney High School, worked four innings of scoreless relief striking out four and walking two.
The nightcap saw the visitor’s offensive touch Fighting Tiger pitchers for 11 runs on 17 hits as Union jumped out to an 8-0 lead after three innings and never looked back.
The Fighting Tiger offense did show some late life as senior centerfielder Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a RBI while junior shortstop Maya Davies, Binghamton, N.Y., Chenango Valley High School, Onondaga Community College, was also 1-for-3 with a double and a RBI.
Cobleskill is next scheduled to be in action on Wednesday April 6 when they host the Gators of Sage College for a pair of non-league games at Fighting Tiger Park with first pitch scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
