DELHI — Delaware County Acting District Attorney Shawn Smith announced today that Valerie Alexander, 59, of Delhi, New York appeared in Delaware County Court on August 7, 2023, and pleaded guilty to Welfare Fraud in the Fourth Degree and was sentenced to 9 months incarceration.

Valerie Alexander pleaded guilty to Count One of her Indictment and admitted that she stole public assistance benefits totaling $2,530.25.

This guilty plea was entered as part of a negotiated disposition. After pleading guilty, the Honorable John L. Hubbard sentenced the defendant to serve 9 months of incarceration at the Delaware County Correctional Facility.  The Judge also ordered that the defendant pay restitution to the Delaware County Department of Social Services in the amount of $2,530.25.

Acting District Attorney Shawn Smith stated, “I commend Delaware County Welfare Fraud Investigator Justin Weaver for his thorough investigation of this case which permitted us to obtain this conviction without the need of a trial.  My office will continue to partner with the Delaware County Department of Social Services to make sure that anyone stealing funds from these public assistance programs is held accountable.”
