By Schoharie County Playwrights at The Community Library
The Theater Project of Schoharie County is presenting an evening of eight ten- minute plays they are calling “Locally Sourced Plays” on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at The Community Library at 6:00 PM. The plays were written, or started being written, in a class taught this fall by Don LaPlant, a Cobleskill playwright and playwriting teacher, with an education grant from CREATE, the New York State Council on the Arts.
Kate Elder wrote a play about the transformation of one man after doing community theater, called “Recalculating, Don” it has as actors Brian Elder, Mike Breglia, Dorothy Brownell, Darren and Liz Hackney and is directed by Julia Walter. “An Afternoon Chat,” by Vern Hall, has two old friends discussing their lives. Mike Breglia and Brian Elder appear in it. “Phil in the Blank” by Katie Horn is directed by founder of Theater Project of Schoharie County, Katherine Hawkins, with Izzy Lasky, Jason Gagnon, and Chris Conti. This play is about friendship and transformations that begin with a chance encounter on a city bus. “Family Camping” by Annie Breglia and directed by Paige Bulmer is about grandparents and their granddaughter connecting in a heartfelt way about family dynamics. Libby Hammacker, Tessa Davis and Vern Hall star. “My Wonderful World of Slapstick” by Julia Walter is about whether silent film star Buster Keaton can break down barriers to work with the ghostwriter of his autobiography, with Pete Lindemann and Nathan Davis. “Michel’s Mom” by Leslie Rigley and directed by Annie Breglia is a conversation between Michelangelo (the artist, not the TMNT) and his mother, portrayed by Francesca Anderson and Eleanor Gagnon. “Tinderbox” by Don LaPlant is directed by Kate Elder and it’s about a divorcing couple, as their neighborhood is burning down, with Jason and Laura Gagnon. “El Jefe” is by Pete Lindemann, directed by Nathan Davis and has Darren and Liz Hackney, Paige Bulmer, Natasha Foote, Brian Elder, Alicia Nicholls and Katie Horn. In this play, Pete goes to a restaurant in Smithfield, NC and gets confused for someone else. What will Elaine do?
The evening of plays, which will be a “concert” of readings, with no staging, or costumes, or lights or sounds, just the language. Admission will be by donation.
“The Theater Project has created this beautiful opportunity for creativity and community,” said Katie Horn.
