By the Delaware County Fire Police Association
DELHI — Delaware County has one of the most unique lawmen to our area. As soon as one hears about a "Mounted Constable", you immediately think of the 53 1/2 year, and still active, Steve Williamson, from Roxbury.
No matter what the occasion is, a parade, the Delaware County Fair, or assisting on a search in some of Delaware County's tough terrain, you can find Mounted Constable, Steve Williamson, offering his experience and classy presentation with his horse. Williamson always gets a smile, and a hello, from everyone who sees him. He is the most recognized and honored Constable, and his quiet, but firm presence, always commands respect.
A couple of years ago, the Delaware County Fire Police Association had started the process to recognize Mounted Constable, Steve Williamson, for his over 50 years in his position, with something that would be worthy of an individual with the dedication he has had. A plaque, and an honorable lifetime membership to the organization, was put into motion.
Needless to say, Williamson was very humbled by the recognition, and stated that, "The Fire Police are the true heroes, in that they are volunteers, while I am paid for my service."
A presentation was made at the November 16th, 2023, Delaware County Fire Police Association meeting, with Williamson invited as a guest, and President Kevin James presented the plaque, with an honorable lifetime membership, to the Association.
Unfortunately, on that night, Delaware County Sheriff, Craig DuMond, was not available to participate in this honorable moment and requested that a date be set to where he could show his support for the decision to acknowledge a longtime lawman in a special capacity. Sheriff DuMond added that "This is a very honorable gesture, and I would like to see this presentation."
On December 4th, 2023, a re-dedication was granted to where several from the Delaware County Emergency Services could be present to see Mounted Constable, Steve Williamson, recognized, at the Phoebe Lane, Delaware County Emergency Services Building, in Delhi, NY.
Williamson has agreed to assist as a law advisor to the Delaware County Fire Police Association, and will attend meetings in the future. President James added, "Mounted Constable, Steve Williamson, is a vital part of our community, and we are certainly lucky to have him as an example of what we, as Fire Police, should emulate in ourselves, as we interact with the public. Steve is a positive part of what makes Delaware County a great place to live."
