FREEHOLD — Mooney’s Auction has been a mainstay of Greene County for almost 50 years, including its start as the old Durham Auction Barn in 1974. The family business owned by Al Cardamone has gone through several changes and expansions over the years and has now achieved its most accessible and interesting iteration.

Having also been involved in the 1980s Riverfront Auctions in Coxsackie and in East Durham in 1996, the business moved to its current location at 10251 NY Route 32 in Freehold in 2018.

The auctions are held every three weeks, with winter sessions happening on Saturday mornings at 10:30. The spring/summer schedule will take place on Monday nights at 5;30.

Some really interesting items have come out of Cardamone’s time in the business, including a Revolutionary War uniform in a trunk in Athens and paintings that have sold for $15,000 and $20,000.

The owner said that when he’s selling he looks at what the team does “as a play.”

The items are the cast of actions that have 15 seconds to perform.

Call ahead for more info or phone bids at 518-634-2300. All auctions are in-person or via phone, with no online component to make for very interesting sales.

The auction house brings in big numbers, including visitors from the local area, New Jersey, and Massachusetts.

Mooney’s offers free appraisals and invites you to participate in the auctions.

The business also has seen some changes since the pandemic, including from more young people getting involved.

Mooney’s has also put on or hosted a number of benefit auctions, including for the hospital and Ducks Unlimited.

“It’s time to rediscover Mooney’s,” he said.

He added that placing items for sale through the auction process will usually get the seller more money than a straight sale. The business has items of all sorts but has especially impressive offerings of jewelry, gold, silver, paintings, and furniture. Furnish your house in one stop!
