Sgt. James F. Carty, DSC VFW Post 1545

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 3/28/24 | 3/28/24

As we approach the end of March which came in like a lamb and is going out like a lion, there is one thing left to announce.

March 29th is National Vietnam War Day. Maybe you haven’t heard of it. It is a real day.  Honoring those who served in Vietnam.

It is not another day that you hear about such as world water day, as young as you feel day, or the ever-popular national jelly donut day.

This day means a lot to veterans who served during the War in Vietnam. Some quick facts regarding National Vietnam War Day are, recognizing veterans who served in the US military during the Vietnam War.

President Donald J. Trump signed the Vietnam War Veterans Recognition Act of 2017 on March 28, 2017, to officially recognize March 29 as National Vietnam War Veterans Day.

Over 8 million U.S. troops served in Vietnam according to the U.S. Department of Defense.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is an opportunity to recognize and give thanks for all who served during the Vietnam War, including those who were wounded, gave their lives, or went missing.

Even in the face of controversy and opposition at home, millions of Americans honorably answered the call to serve our country during this tumultuous time in history.

And when those who were fortunate enough to come home finally returned, they were met by ugly protests, scorn, and neglect.

National Vietnam War Veterans Day is the Heroes’ Welcome they never received. It underscores the need to heal their painful wounds and allows us the occasion each year to pause and give respect, admiration and thanks to the patriotic men and women who sacrificed so much in service to their nation.

Today if you see a Vietnam veteran or know of one; thank them for their service.

I would like to extend an invitation to all veterans to join our Post. Continue to serve as a veteran by helping veterans and your community.

The VFW has for over 100 years been fighting for veterans’ rights and comradeship. For information regarding joining our Post here in Windham email me at vfwpost1545@gmail.com

Remember our troops are still serving and keep them in your thoughts and prayers. And to all my Vietnam comrades I say, “WELCOME HOME!”  and God Bless America.
