Obituary - Joan C. Diamond

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 4/17/24 | 4/17/24

Joan C. Diamond, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 9th, 2024 at Bassett Medical Center in Cooperstown, NY surrounded by her loving family.

Born Thursday, July 28th, 1938 in Schenectady, NY to William and Marion (Briggs) Churchill. Her early years were spent as a farm girl on the family farm in Jefferson, where she drove hay forks and work trucks with no doors to help her father and younger brother, both of whom she adored. She often recalled and shared memories of her years on the farm. Memories that remained close to her heart.

After farm life, Joan was called to motherhood and life as a teacher which were fitting roles as she adored all children, and all children adored her. She dedicated 40 years to children and families in the Cobleskill Central School District in Cobleskill, NY. She touched the lives of countless students with her passion for education and love for teaching. Every day she considered herself blessed for the experiences she had with every child.

Joan truly loved traveling and engaging in new experiences. She especially loved her time in Chatham, Cape Cod, where she spent parts of every summer for nearly 50 years. In retirement, she enjoyed Scrabble and Mahjong, and she hosted friends for sessions of both in her home. Through all the years of farming, renovating old homes as Jerry’s right-hand woman, teaching, traveling, gaming, and lighting up lives, Joan was a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. These are roles that Joan cherished and to which she dedicated every ounce of energy and love she had. As a true matriarch, the impact of her love and guidance lives on and will continue to shape the lives of her family through her life of unconditional and everlasting love.

She is survived by her loving husband, Roy "Jerry" Diamond; her children, Kathy Diamond, William (Jo-Ann) Diamond, and Eric “Rick” (Carol Hazen) Diamond; her grandchildren, Zak (Kenzie Weir) Brayton, Ali Brayton, Trevor (Alex) Diamond, Carly Diamond, Hanna (Reece Eddy) Diamond, and Sylvi Diamond; and great-grandchildren, Easton & Wesley Brayton. She is also survived by her brother, Richard Churchill; her beloved “Schenectady” cousins, and several nieces and nephews.

Family and friends are welcome to a period of visitation to be held from 5PM to 7PM on Friday, April 12, 2024 at Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home, 171 Elm St., Cobleskill. A Celebration of Life will be held at 11 AM on Saturday, April 13, 2024 at the Jefferson United Methodist Church, Main St., Jefferson, NY with Rev. Donna LeRoy and Rev. Brenda Tompkins officiating. Private burial will take place in Evergreen Cemetery, Jefferson, NY.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Marathon For a Better Life, PO Box 268, Warnerville, NY 12187 in Joan's memory.

Joan will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Arrangements are entrusted to Mereness-Putnam Funeral Home.
