As Memorial Day approaches, I want to mention that on the original Memorial Day, Thursday, May 30, in the morning - our Post will perform our VFW Ritual at two sites.
Sgt. Carty’s grave at Ashland Cemetery, then proceed to Windham Cemetery - to the John Goettsche grave site and end up at the Hensonville Memorial on 296.
Should anyone request us to do a ceremony at the grave of your family’s veteran, please let me know and we will accommodate you.
Mr. John Giordano is spearheading the building of a veterans memorial in the Town of Jewett and should you want to donate to this effort, please send in your donations to VFW Post 1545.
On Saturday May 25th our Post will hold a tag day at the intersection of State Route 23 and Route 296 from 9 a.m. until 1 p.m. Hope the weather cooperates.
I am always asking for new members to join our Post. Our membership numbers have gone down due to the passing of members.
We only have one WWII member (Mr. Peter O’Brien – US Navy) and we have even lost a few Vietnam veterans.
We do have a few members that have not been at meetings or supported our Post and I wish they would consider attending.
It is puzzling as to the low attendance lately at our meetings and we can only survive as a Post with member participation.
Our Post has been in Windham since 1928 when our charter was incorporated. That’s a long time for a Post to be active in the community.
Without more members joining to help with our work to help veterans and the community it is difficult for the members that now are active.
We will be in existence 100 years in 2028 which is a milestone. We have such a great history of working with the community and funding veteran’s needs in the greater Capital District.
We fought in uniform to keep our country safe. Today, we continue that fight through our National Security and Foreign Affairs (NS&FA) program.
Simply put, NS&FA works to maintain the integrity of our great nation. Each VFW works to help veterans first and foremost.
Two words that we do not like to hear are “Homeless Veterans.” We do everything to help veteran homelessness along with veteran suicide.
These causes are most important…as veterans we must work together for each other. Our voices are more powerful in numbers when it comes to legislation and funding these causes.
When we work together, we are strong. Our motto of "No One Does More for Veterans" is more than just a phrase, it is a promise.
Since 1899, we've fought to preserve the values that make America great because we know how important community service is to America.
With volunteerism benefiting education, the environment, health sciences and civic projects, join us in this mission by getting involved in your community and honoring America's veterans.
Remember to keep our troops that are still serving throughout the world in your thoughts and prayers to keep them safe. God Bless America.
Marc Farmilette, PDC – Post Commander
