HOBART – The death of a longtime member of the Stamford Town Council and a mentor to many, shocked and saddened the board this week. "The Stamford Town Board was shocked and saddened to hear the passing of Rodney Hillis," said Stamford Supervisor John Kosier.
"He was a valued member of the board. He was not afraid to confront or question and also gave sound advice to any problem or issue that arose.
"He was very knowledgeable about highway department equipment and issues."
Hillis had served on the town board since 2012. His absence was felt during last Wednesday's regular town board meeting, which was unusually short.
He served as a mentor to many and touched many lives. He was a 35-year member of the Hobart Fire Department where he served as chief and he worked at the South Kortright Central School, first as a mechanic and bus driver, then retiring as its transportation supervisor. He was also a farmer.
Calling hours are this Saturday, from 3-6 p.m. at McArthur Funeral with a celebration of life from 2-5 p.m. on Sunday at the Hobart Community Center.
"He will be greatly missed by the board," said Kosier.
