Schoharie (Schoharie County)- Carl J. Stefanik, 84, a longtime resident of Schoharie, passed away on January 6, 2025.
Carl was born on December 25th,1940 in Holyoke, Massachusetts to the late Paul and Helen (Tenczar) Stefanik. Carl was one of nine children. He attended Holyoke High School, and upon graduation, went on to attend Worcester Polytechnic Institute in Worcester, MA , where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering, in 1962. He was a member of the Phi Sigma Kappa Fraternity. Carl continued his education and went on to earn a Master’s Degree in Environmental Engineering from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy N.Y., in 1965.
From 1964 to 1975, Carl was the Director of Environmental Health in Rensselaer County. In October 1975, he became the Director of Public Health for Schoharie County, a position he held for 31 years, until his retirement in 2006. He was a longtime member of the Schoharie County Board of Health even after his county retirement. Carl was also an Adjunct Professor at Hudson Valley Community College & SUNY Cobleskill for over 30 years combined.
Carl was an avid sportsman and outdoorsman that enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing and skiing. He was a past member of the Schodack Rod & Gun Club, a past President of the Middleburgh Rod & Gun Club, an active member of the Schoharie County Conservation Association and was the Sportsman Representative on the NYS Region 4 Fish and Wildlife Management Board for many years. He was a longtime member of the Cobleskill Golf & Country Club. Carl was also a member and continually active in several civic organizations including the Schoharie Rotary Club, the Schoharie Kiwanis Club, and the Schoharie County Chapter of the Joshua Project. He served as a board member for the Schoharie Free Library. Carl was a devote member of the former St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Schoharie, and then became a member of Our Lady of the Valley R.C. Church in Middleburgh, NY.
Carl’s greatest love was spending time with his family, especially the time spent together with his grandson Adam. Cherishing his memory is his daughter, Aimee Ullman (Jeff), and his grandson Adam Ullman(Kaitlin). Carl was predeceased by his son, Scott Stefanik, in 1983. Also cherishing his memory are his sisters Joyce Forrant, Sandy Kingman, Dolly Struthers, as well as numerous nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his siblings Robert Stefanik, Paul Stefanik, Pauline Durett, Dorthy Fix and Karen Stefanik.
Calling hours will be held from 3-5 PM on Monday, January 13th at the Langan Funeral Home, 327 Main Street, Schoharie where a prayer service will be offered at 5 PM. Burial will be later in the Old Stone Fort Cemetery.
