Ashland Speaks

Another week gone by and I don't know what I did.  I am starting to sort papers to get together for my sons' taxes.  This year Community Action will be holding a tax day in Prattsville  for those who can't make it to Catskill.  Unfortunately there are a limited number of openings and I am signing my sons up immediately.  Call Community Action of Greene County for more details.  If the Mountain Top residents show more interest, we might be able to get another day added, if not this year, then next.  Our goal is to bring more services up here, rather than going down to Catskill for everything.

I can't believe the wind this winter!  It seems that everyday it gets stronger, and colder.  Then comes Friday, and it rains.  Judy had to go to Greenville and it was 37 up here and 37 down there.  In Cairo there was ice on her windshield.  Despite the iffy weather, 21 hearty souls showed up at the Ashland Community Church for Dinner church.  Then, on Sunday, we couldn't go to church because of the ice on the parking lot.  Lots of slipping and sliding that day.

The temps have been great for making snow, and both slopes were packed over the weekend.  The ice climbers on Palenville Mt have been out in full force.  Definitely nothing I'd like to do.

Welcome to my new Mail Carrier, Stanley Fancher.  After years of traveling to work, he finally gets to stay close to home.  I was trying to walk up my  driveway the other day when he was heading to Ashland, and he stopped and helped me up the hill with a promise that he would help me back down if I was out when he came through delivering.  It's good to see a local boy delivering local mail.

One of my must hear shows on WRIP is on at Wednesday at 3:30 when Mike Ryan gives us a teaser of what will be in the Windham Weekly. Hope you all heard it this week when they interviewed Ruthie and Donnie.  Ruthie Vining Welch is a ventriloquist, and it was an interesting interview.

Sympathy to the family of Ruth May Woodworth, and the Paul Tompkins Jr family (handlebar mustache).

AS I REMEMBER IT

Last week my friend Judy reminded me to buy extra coffee as there may be a shortage.  That got me thinking about coffee..  When I was young, I remember a pot on the wood stove in the kitchen.  It was very tall, like a pitcher, blue agate, with a basket on the top for the grinds.  The lid had a glass bubble in it to watch the coffee perk.  Not too fast or it would boil over, and not too slow or it would be weak coffee.  It was put on the burner first thing in the morning, then moved to the back of the stove where it sat all day for the brave soul who wanted a cup.  By the afternoon, it was nice and muddy.  The men would come in from the barn and enjoy that instant bolt of energy.  Coffee then was bought in bulk, like sugar and flour.  We usually bought whole bean coffee as each household had a coffee grinder.  Some were simple boxes with a handle on top and a drawer where the coffee was ground into.  Others were more elaborate with a hopper on top, two big wheels on either side with a handle to turn them, then the drawer below to catch to grounds.  If you go to the Xenia Motel in Jewett Center, there is a large collection of coffee grinders in their foyer.  Sometimes chicory was added to enhance the coffee, and to make it go farther.

Who doesn't remember instant coffee when it first came out?  What a time saver.  You could have a fresh cup whenever you wanted, just by boiling water.  Fill it to the rim—with Brim.  Folgers came out with freeze dried.  Nescafe was a popular brand, found in most houses.  Do you remember Jaun Valdez with the picture of him with his sombrero and mustache, leading his burro laden with Columbian coffee beans?

Next came Mr Coffee automatic drip coffee.  Then they put a timer on it so you can wake up to already made coffee, as long as you remember to fill it the night before.  Sanka became synonymous with decaffeinated coffee.  Now we have French Roast, Columbian, Breakfast Blend, Donut shop blend, flavored coffee, half caf, super caffeinated, you name it, it's there.  French press, drip, auto drip, pods, bags, perked—What is your choice of coffee?
