Delaware Academy Producing The Wizard of Oz

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 2/28/25 | 2/28/25

DELHI — On Thursday, March 6th, at 4pm, senior citizens are invited to the Delaware Academy Central School District Auditorium where they will be treated to a free dress rehearsal of the timeless tale, The Wizard of Oz.  The Delaware Academy Spring Musical will be hosting area senior citizens to view the annual school musical and have dinner in the district's dining hall.

L. Frank Baum’s enchanting tale follows the story of Dorothy Gale, a young girl who, fearing her dog would be taken and destroyed by the County Sheriff after a local woman makes a complaint against him, runs away from home only to find herself in a magical land, far ‘over the rainbow.’  The Wizard of Oz was originally produced for movie theaters by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1939 and was first aired on television in 1956.  Later, it was adapted for the stage by the Royal Shakespeare Company.  When the movie first aired on television, starring the iconic Judy Garland as Dorothy in 1957, it became an instant classic that many looked forward to watching each winter.  Since then, Baum’s tale has continued to charm audiences in productions on stage and on television.  This classic tale of a girl and her dog includes many classic songs known by all including “Over the Rainbow,” “Yellow Brick Road,” “We’re Off to See the Wizard,” and “If I Only Had a Brain” to name a few.  The Delaware Academy version of The Wizard of Oz sets the classic tale in the modern age but maintains the fidelity and music of the original storyline.

At intermission (around 6:00 pm) seniors will be escorted to the district's dining hall for a Chicken and Biscuit dinner served by Delaware Academy’s Food Service Staff and the cast of the show.  They will then return to the theater to enjoy the rest of the musical.

Persons planning to attend are encouraged to call the Office for the Aging at 607-832-5750 in advance so that the Food Service Department at Delaware Academy can have an accurate estimate for meal production.  A donation of $5.00 for the dinner is encouraged to help offset costs.
