STAMFORD — Grammy award-winning songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and historian Dom Flemons, the “American Songster, performs from a repertoire of original songs and over 100 years of early American popular music at the Headwaters Arts Center on Sunday, February 16 at 4:00pm. Limited folding chairs will be available, but audience members are encouraged to bring their own chairs or blankets for the floor. Dom Flemons has been devoted to the preservation and restoration of early American popular music throughout his career. His earlier projects with colleague Rhiannon Giddens, Sankofa Strings and the Carolina Chocolate Drops, inspired a new generation of black banjo and old time string players like Jake Blount who performed at both Roxbury Arts Group and West Kortright Center in recent years. Upon launching his solo career in 2013, Dom Flemons continued his dedication to recovering folk songs that were once lost to or sublimated by the white American music industry; he deftly restores their vitality, affirming their grounding in the historical record.
Flemons work has been recognized with a Grammy Award®, two Emmy® nominations, and 2020 U.S. Artists Fellowship. His 2018 album, Black Cowboys pays tribute to the music, culture, and the complex history of the golden era of the Wild West. In contrast, his 2023 album Traveling Wildfire, available on Smithsonian Folkways, features original songs that reveal his love of country, western, blues, Americana, bluegrass and folk music as they tell of true love, family legacy, survival, time travel, and the juxtaposition between light and dark. Traveling Wildfire weaves through the themes of hope and humor as it rises above the hard times with strength and lightheartedness.
