A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot, on October 4, 2025 at 4:00PM at the
Rosendale Theatre 408 Main St, Rosendale, NY.
This premiere will be the
closing night of the “The Work Around the Work” hosted by Women’s Studio
Workshop will have it’s opening reception October 3, 6-8 PM at 722 Binnewater
Lane, Kingston, NY.
A Culinary Uprising: The Story of Bloodroot is an 82-minute film, directed by
filmmaker Annie Laurie Medonis, chronicling the extraordinary Bloodroot, a
historic feminist vegan restaurant and bookstore in Bridgeport, CT, and the
pioneering women who built it.
Medonis documented the lives of Bloodroot's founders, Selma Miriam (89) and
Noel Furie (79), whose identities as lesbian, vegan feminists have shaped the
ethos and legacy of their iconic establishment.
Founded in 1977, Bloodroot is more than just a restaurant; it is a cultural and
political hub for feminist activism, LGBTQ+ visibility, and community building.
Director Annie Laurie Medonis is available for interviews to discuss the making of
the film and the legacy of Bloodroot.
