Bassett Medical Center Completes 100th Watchman Procedure

Written By Editor on 10/17/23 | 10/17/23

Cooperstown, NY – Bassett Healthcare Network announced today that its Interventional Cardiology team at Bassett Medical Center has completed their 100th Watchman heart procedure since launching the program in 2020.

“Congratulations to Bassett’s entire Interventional Cardiology team for providing these essential services and remarkable outcomes to our communities,” said Dr. Tommy Ibrahim, President and CEO of Bassett Healthcare Network. “We are beyond proud of their exceptional accomplishments.”

WATCHMAN is a one-time procedure for people with Atrial Fibrillation (AFib) – which is an abnormal heartbeat – not caused by a heart valve problem who are looking for an alternative to taking medicines that are long-term blood thinners,” said Dr. Dhananjai Menzies, Interventional Cardiologist at Bassett Medical Center, Director of the Cardiac Catheterization Lab, and Structural and Interventional Program.

The Watchman implant device is approximately the size of a quarter and shaped like a parachute. It is implanted into the heart to close off the left atrial appendage (LAA), a blind pouch of heart tissue, to prevent blood clots from forming and causing a stroke. Patients receiving a Watchman typically spend less time in the hospital compared to those who undergo open-heart surgery.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), heart disease is the leading cause of death among both men and women in the United States. Roughly 1 in 5 deaths in the U.S. in 2020 were caused by heart disease, with one person dying from cardiovascular disease every 34 seconds.

Five of the eight counties in Bassett’s service area have cardiovascular disease death rates consistently above or far above the New York State and national averages.

Bassett’s
Interventional Cardiology team also recently completed their 300th Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement (TAVR) and is closing in on completing 10,000 coronary stent procedures. Their Cardiac Stenting program is in the top three in New York State in terms of outcomes.

Cooperstown, New York — Children ages 9-14 are invited to participate in a storytelling and illustration workshop at Fenimore Art Museum—inspired by the artwork of Frog and Toad creator Arnold Lobel. Participants will be encouraged to let their imaginations run free as they learn how to combine illustration and writing to take one of their ideas and create their own storybook. The workshop takes place on Saturday and Sunday, November 11-12, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. each day. Registration is required: $75 Museum Members / $90 non-members. Information and registration is available at www.fenimoreart.org or www.eventbrite.com.

The workshop includes a special tour with Manager of Arts Education Kevin Gray, who will lead participants through the exhibition, Frog and Toad & Other Friends: The World of Arnold Lobel, showing how the award-winning illustrator and author assembled his stories and created early drafts. These original drawings and book layouts include notes and suggestions from Lobel’s editors, providing great insight to the book-writing process. Participants will write story drafts, pair them with drawings they have made, and will finish by learning to make a hand-bound book containing their story.

Fenimore Art Museum is located at 5798 State Route 80, less than one mile from the center of Cooperstown. For more information visit FenimoreArt.org.

About the Exhibition

Frog and Toad & Other Friends: The World of Arnold Lobel (through December 31, 2023) celebrates the art of Arnold Lobel (1933–1987), author and illustrator of some of the most beloved children’s books produced since the late 1960s. Included among these are his Frog and Toad series (1971–79), Mouse Soup (1977), and Fables (1980), which was awarded the prestigious Caldecott Medal. Creating a magical world animated by a talking frog, a toad, an owl, mice, kangaroos, and other colorful creatures, Lobel subtly reflects upon human foibles in his charmingly rendered stories and illustrations. The exhibition features over one hundred original illustrations and works on paper highlighting Lobel’s detailed illustration technique and warm, funny tales of love and friendship, mostly among animal friends.

SUNY Delhi to Host Regional Economic Development Planning Meeting

The community open forum will be held on October 19.

DELHI, NY (10/13/2023) As the Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council (STREDC) works on refining its vision for the economic future of the region, SUNY Delhi will host a public open forum to solicit feedback and priorities from the community. The event will be held on October 19 at 5:30 p.m. in the Okun Theatre at SUNY Delhi. Led by Omar Sanders, regional director of the Southern Tier Regional Council, and representatives from River Street Planning and Development of Troy, NY, the program will focus on the Southern Tier's Regional Challenge topic of talent attraction and retention.

Dr. Mary Bonderoff, acting president of SUNY Delhi, who recently joined the STREDC's education subcommittee, is eager to ensure that Delaware County and the communities surrounding the college have a voice in developing the council's new strategic plan.

"The Regional Economic Development Council provides a pathway to important resources for businesses and organizations in our community," said Dr. Bonderoff. "As the strategic plan for the region is being updated for the first time since 2011, we volunteered to host this planning session at SUNY Delhi to bring our partners and neighbors into the fold in developing the Southern Tier's economic future."

The Southern Tier Regional Economic Development Council, one of ten regional councils in New York State, represents Steuben, Schuyler, Chemung, Tompkins, Tioga, Broome, Chenango, and Delaware Counties. Each council seeks to facilitate collaboration between business and academia to ensure employer workforce needs are met and business support services are provided to start-up companies seeking to commercialize academic research. As part of the strategic planning challenge, the ten councils will compete for an additional $10 million in funding for their region.

Since its inception, the Regional Economic Development Council Initiative has awarded over $7.8 billion to more than 9,600 projects. The REDCs have also played a critical role in selecting the nearly 70 Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) communities and 24 New York Forward communities to receive $800 million for transformative projects to revitalize their downtowns.

A Zoom link for the October 19 event as well as an online community survey can be found at www.regionalcouncils.ny.gov/southern-tier

Four New Members Inducted into SUNY Delhi Athletics Hall of Fame

DELHI —The SUNY Delhi Athletics Hall of Fame Committee proudly inducted four new members as part of the 15th ever induction class. This year's class includes Senator Peter Oberacker '83 (Baseball and Basketball), Kevin Parrott '84 (Wrestling), Cedric Hawkins '94 (Track & Field), and James Gordon '00 (Lacrosse). The four were recognized on October 14 and 15 in numerous events around Delhi, including a special reception and a halftime recognition at the women's soccer match.

"We are deeply honored to have such a diverse group join our Hall of Fame this year," said Director of Athletics and Committee Chair Bob Backus. "Through our four inductees, we have six SUNY Delhi Athletic Programs featured. The Athletics Department is pleased to host this event in coordination with our home soccer contests for the benefit of our student body and campus."

Peter Oberacker '83 was a dual-sport athlete, participating in basketball and baseball at SUNY Delhi from 1981-1983. A standout baseball pitcher, Oberacker's freshman year showcased a strong performance, accumulating a 3-1 record with an impressive 2.50 ERA. In his second season, he continued to excel on the mound as a Captain, achieving a remarkable 4-0 record and an outstanding 1.98 ERA, contributing to the Broncos' advancement to post-season regional play.

Upon graduating with an Associate Degree in Food Sale and Distribution in 1983, Oberacker harnessed his educational foundation from Delhi to establish his own venture, Formtech Solutions Inc. As CEO of this international food ingredient and research development company, he has remained at the forefront of pioneering new and integrated products for the food industry. Demonstrating a strong sense of community, Oberacker has taken up pivotal leadership roles in government, including serving as town supervisor in his hometown of Maryland, Otsego County Representative, and New York State Senator. First elected to the state senate in 2020, Oberacker represents the 51st Senate District, one of the most expansive districts in the state. Additionally, he is an active member of his local fire department and EMS squad, as well as the Masonic Lodge.

Kevin Parrott '84 was an outstanding wrestler in the 142 lb. weight class on the SUNY Delhi Broncos wrestling squad during the Broncos "era of dominance" in the NJCAA during the early eighties. He achieved two-time Region III Champion status and secured NJCAA All-American honors in 1984 with a 3rd place finish at Nationals. Parrott earned the 'Delhi Outstanding Wrestler Award' and captained the squad during his second season in the green and gold.

After earning an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Building Construction in 1984, he continued wrestling at Carson Newman in Tennessee. He later coached youth wrestling in Whitehall, NY, and currently serves as the Director of Facilities at Lake George High School.

Cedric Hawkins '94 attended SUNY Delhi from 1992 to 1994, participating in the men's Indoor and Outdoor Track & Field program for two seasons. Specializing in the high hurdles and the high jump events, Cedric achieved remarkable success by becoming a Region III Champion in Indoor Track at the 55-meter Hurdles with a time of 7.5 seconds. He also clinched the title of Region III Champion in Outdoor Track at the 110-meter Hurdles, with an impressive time of 14.42 seconds. Notably, both of these hurdle performances remain as enduring SUNY Delhi School records. Furthermore, his exceptional performance in the 110 High Hurdles still holds the record for the Region III Championship Meet. Cedric's prowess extended to the high jump, where his achievement of clearing 6' 10" at the 1993 Outdoor Track & Field Championships earned him NJCAA All-American honors and a podium placement.

After his time at Delhi, Cedric pursued education at Hunter College, earning a Bachelor's Degree in 2003, and later obtaining a Master's Degree in Guidance and Counseling from the College of New Rochelle in 2006. Currently residing with his family in the Bronx, NY, Cedric has served as a High School Guidance Counselor since 2006. In this role, he has been dedicated to assisting and guiding high school students in making informed decisions about their college education and future career paths.

James Gordon '00 attended SUNY Delhi from 1998-2000 and played midfield on the Men's Lacrosse team for two seasons during the early pioneering days of the newly established Men's Lacrosse program which officially began in 1998. During the 1999 and 2000 seasons, James helped the Broncos to establish the foundation for the future success of the program. He served as a team Captain both seasons and twice earned All-Conference honors and was a Coaches Award recipient. Statistically, during his two seasons, he totaled 61 goals and 25 assists over his career, which were both SUNY Delhi program records at the time of his graduation. The 2000 team was the Mountain Valley Conference co-Champions and James was recognized with NJCAA All American - Honorable Mention Honors.

After completing his Associate Degree in Business Administration from SUNY Delhi in 2000, he went on to attend West Chester University, PA, where he also participated on the men's lacrosse team.

New York Power Authority Names First VP to Head Renewable Project Development

Renewables Leader to Oversee NYPA’s Strategic Planning for Priority Clean Energy Projects

WHITE PLAINS—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) has created a new senior leadership role to deliver upon its expanded authority to develop, own and operate renewable energy generating projects to assist the state in advancing its clean energy targets. The newly hired vice president of renewable project development will help lead the drafting of a 2025 strategic plan to identify NYPA actions and priorities for building more renewable resources and support decarbonizing New York State’s electric grid.

Vennela Yadhati was named NYPA’s first VP, Renewable Project Development, effective Oct. 9. She will lead a team under the direction of Phil Toia, President, NYPA Development, who is charged with helping NYPA achieve goals for large-scale renewables and utility-scale storage projects as well as expanding transmission systems to support this growth.

“The Power Authority with its expanded authority will have a key role in identifying, developing and building renewable energy projects that will move the state forward to achieve its bold climate action goals,” said Power Authority President and CEO Justin E. Driscoll. “Vennela brings leadership skills and a proven ability to execute renewable generation and energy storage projects. We are pleased to have Vennela lead our renewables team as we prioritize projects, alone or in partnership, that can help advance New York’s clean energy future and support the continued economic growth and competitiveness of New York State.”

NYPA’s expanded authority was added in legislation in New York State’s 2023-24 Enacted State Budget. The legislation enables NYPA to assist the state in meeting its clean energy targets, including a goal to produce 70% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030. NYPA can build these resources —on its own and in collaboration with public and private partners—to accelerate the state’s decarbonization journey.

Yadhati first joined the Power Authority in 2018 as a manager in Distributed Energy Resources, supporting and executing renewable project contracts and identifying new markets and business models to expand NYPA’s service offerings to better support the State’s and NYPA customers’ clean energy goals. She spent the past two years at Orsted, a Danish company that develops renewable energy facilities, where she was a senior manager of commercial strategy and business development. Yadhati now rejoins NYPA in her new role.

Yadhati’s responsibilities at NYPA will involve leading the renewable project development team to successfully execute projects and develop business plans to advance new initiatives and strategies, according to Toia.  She will also manage related interconnection needs.

Yadhati joins the Authority as it moves forward with a conferral process, called for in the enacted legislation that grants the expanded authority. Through the conferral process, input is being gathered from state agencies and other key stakeholders—including climate and resiliency experts, labor organizations, and environmental justice and community group—regarding progress on the implementation of New York’s renewable energy goals as outlined in the state’s Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act.

The final conferral report, expected to be issued by the end of the year, will be made public and used by the Power Authority to inform the development of its first two-year strategic plan that will outline its strategies and proposed projects.

The expanded authority also includes authority for NYPA to fund and work with the State Department of Labor on workforce development programs that will serve as a pipeline and break down traditional barriers to entry into the utility industry.  The enactment also directs NYPA to develop a plan to phase-out electricity production from its small, natural gas-fired power plants by the end of 2030 and consider using the sites for renewable generation, energy storage, or electric grid support needs as appropriate.

The legislation also empowers NYPA, in partnership with the Public Service Commission (PSC), to support disadvantaged communities with a new Renewable Energy Access and Community Help (REACH) program that will enable low-income and moderate-income electricity consumers to receive bill credits funded from revenues from the sale of renewable energy products.

Yadhati is a professional engineer who holds a master of science in electrical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology and a bachelor of technology from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University in Hyderabad, India.  Yadhati lives in White Plains and serves as a board member for Sustainable Westchester and a Planning Board member for the City of White Plains, working to promote clean energy and sustainability.
