The SUNY Cobleskill men’s basketball team opened the season with a pair of impressive home non-conference wins defeating the Blazers of Elms College 84-71 followed on Saturday by 74-60 victory over the Hawks of Hartwick College to open the season at 2-0 overall. Fighting Tiger sophomore guard Robert Long, Rochester, N.Y., McQuaid Jesuit High School, was the driving force for the Orange & Black averaging 21.5 points, 2.0 steals, 1.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game while connecting on 16-of-30 shots from the field, 53.3%, 8-of-18 from three-point range, .444, and connecting on all three of his field goal attempts on the week.
The Fighting Tiger women’s basketball team opened the 2023-24 season in strong fashion posting a pair of non-conference road wins during the week defeating the host Garnett Chargers of Union College in Schenectady on Wednesday evening by a 73-66 margin before traveling to Danbury, Ct. on Sunday afternoon to defeat the Wolves of Western Connecticut State University by a score of 65-54 to open the season at 2-0 overall. Junior guard/forward Cara Walker, Phelps, N.Y., Midlakes High School, averaged 17.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 5.0 steals and 3.0 assists per game.
The Cobleskill men’s cross country team posted a team total of 501 points to place 16th overall in a 28-team field at the 2023 NCAA Division III Niagara Regional Championships hosted by Houghton University at the Field of Dreams in Houghton, N.Y. on Saturday to close out their season. Fighting Tiger senior Nick Logan, Queensbury, N.Y., Queensbury High School, was the team’s top finisher at the event placing 52nd overall in the 176-runner field by covering the 8000-meter course in a time of 25:59.4.
The women’s cross country team closed out their 2023 campaign on Saturday by posting a team total of 485 points to place 17th overall in a 26-team field at the 2023 NCAA Division III Niagara Regional Championships hosted by Houghton University at the Field of Dreams in Houghton, N.Y. Fighting Tiger first-year runner Lilianna Peters, Hinsdale, N.Y., Allegany-Limestone High School, was the team’s top finisher in the 147-runner field covering the 6000-meter loop in a time of 23:03.7.
The Hunt Seat Equestrian competed in a pair of Intercollegiate Horse Show Association’s (IHSA) Region 3 Zone 2 shows hosted by the Mustangs of Morrisville State College at the Morrisville State Equestrian Center. In the first show, the Fighting Tigers posted a team score of 26 points to place fifth overall in a 10-team field followed in the second show with an excellent effort as Cobleskill registered a team total of 36 points to claim a second place finish versus a 10-team field. Sophomore Caroline Palmer, Pittsfield, Mass., Taconic High School, earned high point rider honors on Sunday with outstanding individual efforts in Intermediate Flats and Open Over Fences to help the team to their second place finish.
