HUNTER — The Village of Hunter Board has officially decided to accept discarded natural Christmas trees for recycling throughout January 2024. The initiative, spearheaded by the Village's Department of Public Works (DPW), aims to promote environmentally friendly practices and reduce post-holiday waste.
Residents of the Village are encouraged to participate in the program by leaving their unwanted Christmas trees near their designated trash pickup areas. However, the Village emphasizes that all trees must be stripped of decoration, including lights, tinsel, and other ornaments, to be eligible for collection. Trees with decorations still attached will not be picked up.
The decision targets natural Christmas trees only, excluding artificial ones from the collection process. This distinction ensures that only biodegradable materials are accepted for recycling, aligning with the Village's commitment to sustainability.
The DPW plans to chip the trees, converting them into mulch or other eco-friendly materials. This approach minimizes waste and provides a valuable resource that can be utilized in various landscaping and conservation efforts.
Residents are urged to take advantage of this opportunity to responsibly dispose of their natural Christmas trees, contributing to the Village's broader environmental conservation initiatives.
