Huyck Preserve Homeschool Program Returns in the Fall

RENSSELAERVILLE - The homeschool program at the Huyck Preserve in Rensselaerville returns this fall. The dates are: October 11 and 25; November 8 and 22 9:30-11:30am at the Eldridge Research Center and outside.

There is no better classroom than the outdoors. In the homeschool program, they lead children on a hands-on exploration of the Huyck Preserve's forests, streams, and ponds. This program focuses on building ecological understanding through observation, investigation, and documentation of discoveries, while encouraging creativity through nature art and play.

The Preserve will host a Geology Hike on August 24 from 10am to noon starting at the Preserve's Visitors' Center at 5052 Delaware Turnpike in Rensselaerville.

Time travel back to the Devonian Period with Chuck Ver Straeten, Ph.D. He will walk participants from ancient shallow marine environments to land along the Ten-Mile Creek in the hamlet of Rensselaerville and up along the Falls.

Dr. Ver Straeten is the Curator of Sedimentary Rocks at the New York State Museum in Albany. He specializes in Devonian Period Sedimentation and Stratigraphy, including sea level history, mountain building and sedimentation, paleoecology, and Devonian volcanic ash layers.

Registration is required - event is capped at 20 people.  Suggested donation $5 non-members; members and children under 12 free.
