Native American Rapper Visits Delaware Academy

DELHI – Elementary and middle school students at Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi enjoyed a visit from Supaman Tuesday morning– and that’s not a typo. Supaman (Christian Takes Gun Parrish) is a Native American hip-hop artist and dancer from the Apsáalooke Nation in Montana. He was at the school on Tuesday with DJ Element (Logan Howard) to share his unique blend of music, dance and storytelling. In a highly interactive presentation that combined traditional music and “fancy” dance as well as contemporary hip-hop, Supaman shared messages of resilience, pride, and inclusion in an upbeat and engaging way with the young audience. Dressed from head to toe in traditional Native American regalia, Supaman captivated the students with his music, dance, catch phrases, and one (just one) joke.

Bringing both students and teachers onstage, Supaman created a spontaneous rap with a positive message, with the audience volunteers laying down to component tracks. With DJ Element providing the sound, the school’s middle and elementary school teachers were given the stage to showcase their best dance moves, to the roaring approval of the audience.

With honors including an MTV VMA, Native American Music Award, Indigenous Music Awards, and more, Supaman’s viral videos have reached millions and taken him to stages across the U.S. and beyond. DJ Element is a respected and well-traveled hip-hop DJ, with roots in Arizona’s Salt River Indian Reservation (Pima). Together, they’ve been sharing their music and message in communities around the country. This week’s appearance at Delaware Academy was facilitated by the Roxbury Arts Group.
