National Volunteer Week: These community heroes are the true heart of the American Red Cross

Please help — become a Red Cross volunteer today

APRIL 18, 2023 — It’s National Volunteer Week and the American Red Cross, Eastern New York Region, is recognizing the work of the selfless individuals here who generously give their valuable time to support people in need.

Across the country, more than 275,000 Red Cross volunteers serve their communities by responding to thousands of disasters of all sizes; supporting the collection of blood to help patients receive the critical care they need; supporting members of the military and their families; helping communities prepare for emergencies around the globe and much more.

In the past 12 months, Eastern New York Red Cross volunteers provided food, shelter, comfort and hope to 1,300 local families who faced emergency situations. They trained more than 45,500 people in lifesaving skills, installed nearly 2,800 free smokes alarms in homes, helped to collect more than 100,000 units of blood from volunteer donors, and provided over 2,400 services to military members, veterans and their families.

“National Volunteer Week is time to honor these community heroes for their constant service and support,” said Kevin Coffey, Regional CEO, American Red Cross, “They are the true heart of the Red Cross.”

The Eastern New York Region is comprised of three chapters: Central and Northern New York, Hudson Valley, and Northeastern New York.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED Volunteers are more critical than ever as the climate crisis worsens and the need for shelter, hot meals, health services, emotional support grows. The Red Cross is now launching nearly twice as many relief operations for major disasters than we did a decade ago, and with hurricane and wildfire seasons on the horizon, we have a critical need to fill vital volunteer positions.

  • Disaster Action Team Member: As a Disaster Action Team volunteer, you can be a source of refuge and support when it’s needed most. From home fires to storms, unexpected emergencies happen every day, but you can help as a Red Cross volunteer.
  • Shelter Services: Support the day-to-day activities within an emergency shelter by helping with reception, registration, feeding, dormitory, information or other areas within a shelter. Free online training will be provided.
  • Disaster Health Services: These valuable volunteers use their professional skills as licensed healthcare providers to deliver hands-on care to people in shelters. There is also a need for Mental Health Services volunteers.

The Red Cross also has a need for volunteers to help ensure new moms, cancer patients and accident victims have access to safe, lifesaving blood. We’re recruiting blood donor ambassadors to be a friendly face and help check blood donors into their appointments, answer questions and give out post donation snacks. We also need transportation specialist volunteers who support hospital patients by delivering lifesaving blood from Red Cross facilities to local hospitals.

Visit redcross.org/volunteertoday email joineny@redcross.org or call (518) 387-9441 to get started today. Training is free, but the hope you provide as a Red Cross volunteer to people in need is priceless.

PLEASE GIVE BLOOD The Red Cross invites the public to sign up to become a volunteer blood or platelet donor To schedule an appointment to donate blood or platelets, people can download the free Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit redcrossblood.org or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767).

About the American Red Cross:
The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides comfort to victims of disasters; supplies about 40% of the nation’s blood; teaches skills that save lives; distributes international humanitarian aid; and supports veterans, military members and their families. The Red Cross is a nonprofit organization that depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to deliver its mission. Our May book selection is The Darkness Manifesto: On Light Pollution, Night Ecology, and the Ancient Rhythms That Sustain Life by Johan Eklöf.

Habitat loss, climate change and overuse of agricultural chemicals take a huge toll on wildlife and biodiversity. Johan Eklöf, a Swedish bat scientist, argues that the loss of darkness in our zeal for light at night is just as serious. Combining scientific evidence with rich animal behavioral description, The Darkness Manifesto outlines the global campaign against light pollution, while there’s still something left to save in the dark night.

Robert Lang Earns Top Honor with Marketing Club

Written By Editor on 4/16/23 | 4/16/23

ONEONTA, NY (04/12/2023)-- Robert Lang of Schoharie, NY, was one of 20 students in SUNY Oneonta's Marketing Club, OnMark, who traveled to New Orleans last week to attend the 2023 American Marketing Association's Annual International Collegiate Conference, where they were ranked among the Top 10 Collegiate Chapters of the Year. Lang is studying Business Economics-Marketing

OnMark received this recognition among 333 competing colleges and universities. Schools are judged based on their accomplishments, with each chapter submitting an annual report detailing their fundraiser events, membership drives, community service, career development workshops, and other AMA competitions in which the club participated throughout the year.

This was an improvement from last year, when OnMark was named one of the Top 15 Collegiate Chapters of the Year at the 2022 conference in Chicago.

"Our team enjoyed competing in marketing competitions, listening to keynote speakers and joining skill-up sessions to improve our overall business skills," said club president Vito Giambanco, a Business Economics major from Long Island, NY. "Through the hard work of our executive board and our general body, OnMark was able to secure Commendable mention for our Case Competition, Honorable mention for our Marketing week, and placed in the Top 10 internationally amongst all chapters."

Attendance at the conference was made by possible in part by a grant from the D'Antonio Travel for Excellence Fund.

SUNY Oneonta is a public, four-year university in Central New York, enrolling about 5,500 students in a wide variety of bachelor's degree programs and more than a dozen graduate certificate and degree programs. The university is known as both an exemplary residential campus that values inclusion, service and sustainability, and a nurturing community where students grow intellectually, thrive socially and live purposefully. Bassett Healthcare Network Presents Practitioner of the Year and Caregiver of the Year Awards

Cooperstown, N.Y. – Bassett Healthcare Network has presented two employees with the first Spotlight On Excellence Annual Award.

Chelsea Doig, PA was presented with the Practitioner of the Year award on March 17 at the school-based health conference hosted by Bassett. Chelsea began at Bassett in 2016 as an Emergency Room Tech at O’Connor Hospital while she completed her education to become a physician assistant (PA). In April of 2021, Chelsea became a PA at the Walton Health Center. She has since transitioned to working at the Delaware Academy School-Based Health Center in Delhi.

"She is an incredibly hard worker who helps her patients achieve their best health," said one nominating colleague. "She has compassion that I have never seen before in a provider," said another.

Dr. Valerie Bush was presented with the Caregiver of the Year award on March 29. Dr. Bush joined Bassett in 2004 as Bassett Medical Center’s Clinical Laboratory Director. Dr. Bush’s role has since expanded, and she now serves as the Lab Director for both O’Connor Hospital in Delhi and A.O. Fox Hospital Tri-Town Emergency Department in Sidney. She received her award at a surprise ceremony in Cooperstown with colleagues joining in virtually from all over the network. Her colleagues praised her leadership as a rare combination of knowledge, enthusiasm, innovation, and responsiveness to others.

"She is the yardstick by which we all measure ourselves," said one nominator.

“Dr. Valerie Bush and Chelsea Doig are remarkable caregivers,” said Dr. Tommy Ibrahim, Bassett President and CEO. “They stand out as an inspiration and example for us all. Valerie and Chelsea are representative of countless others at Bassett dedicated to improving the health and well-being of others. I am proud they are my coworkers and grateful they are serving our community.”

The Caregiver of the Year and Practitioner of the Year awards are part of a network-wide Spotlight on Excellence award program. This program recognizes Bassett employees who embody Bassett’s core values of courage, unity, and excellence. The program also presents quarterly awards throughout the year.
