Winter Sowing Workshop
COOPERSTOWN — The Otsego Master Gardener Volunteers are holding a Winter Sowing Workshop on Saturday, January 11, 2025, at the Southside Mall Community Room, 5006 State Hwy 23 in Oneonta. The session will run from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
Winter sowing is a method of starting seeds outdoors in winter popularized by Trudi Davidoff and is now practiced around the world. It is recognized by the USDA as, “A propagation method used throughout the winter where temperate climate seeds are sown into protective vented containers and placed outdoors to foster a naturally timed, high percentage germination of climate tolerant seedlings.”
Come sow with workshop presenters, Otsego Master Gardener Volunteers, Chris Burrington and Celia Oxley. They will cover the techniques for winter sowing including the materials needed and the various kinds of seeds that can be used, as well as the benefits of this low-cost method of germinating seeds and some of the advantages it has over indoor seed-starting requiring grow lights and the hardening-off of seedlings. In addition, participants will make a mini greenhouse in a container and sow seeds to take home. The workshop will also cover how to handle the seedlings once they germinate. Participants are asked to bring a one-gallon translucent container (milk or water jug) and scissors. We will have some seeds but feel free to bring your own.
No previous gardening experience is needed. The program fee is $5 to cover materials. Space is limited; registration is required by Wednesday, January 8, 2025, by going to www.cceschoharie-otsego.org. For more information call 607.547.2536 x235. Ample free parking is available.
University Police Secures Federal Grant to Purchase Patrol Vehicles
COBLESKILL – The University Police Department at SUNY Cobleskill is the recipient of an Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) through the U.S. Department of Justice and administered by the New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services. The award totals $159,000 and will support the purchase of three new SUV patrol vehicles, enhancing the department's operational capabilities to serve and protect the College’s campus and community members. Two of the new units will replace older models while one will be an addition to the fleet.
The Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG) program is the leading source of federal justice funding to state and local jurisdictions. The JAG Program provides states, tribes, and local governments with critical funding necessary to support a range of law enforcement and corrections program areas. The grant is named in honor of NYPD Officer Edward Byrne, who was tragically killed in the line of duty in 1988.
Chief of UPD at SUNY Cobleskill William Henn said, “The safety of our campus community is our highest priority, and this grant serves that by allowing us to update our fleet with advanced vehicles that make us even better equipped to carry our patrol and response duties. We are grateful for the support of the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant program and for the collaborative efforts of our team, whose work was instrumental in securing this funding.”
DCJS Commissioner Rossana Rosado said, “The Edward Byrne Memorial Grant Program provides critical resources that allow law enforcement agencies across the state to improve the safety of their communities. We are proud to support this request from SUNY Cobleskill, which will improve safety for the college’s police officers and allow them to better serve the campus community.”
The University Police Department has been accredited by the New York State Law Enforcement Agency Accreditation Council since 2016, and all of its operational members are certified police officers. The department is composed of uniformed officers who are on duty and patrol 24 hours a day, seven days a week. DCJS also oversees the state’s Accreditation program, which is voluntary and designed to improve an agency’s effectiveness and professionalism; promote training; and foster public confidence in law enforcement.
The grant proposal was authored by Laura Gross, Director of Business Affairs and Controller, on behalf of University Police.

Tague Named Vice Chairman of GOP Assembly Conference Steering Committee - Remains Ranking Member of Agriculture Committee
Assemblyman Chris Tague continues to work on behalf of the people of rural New York as he has been recently named the vice chairman of the Republican Assembly Steering Committee and will remain the ranking member of the Assembly Agriculture Committee.
In his capacity as vice chairman, Tague will continue to collaborate with Assembly Republicans to ensure each is in a place to succeed and deliver for their district and help guide the state Republican Party towards its goals. As ranking member, Tague will continue to lead Republican efforts in government with respect to the long-term work of the agriculture sector of New York. Eager to continue delivering for New Yorkers, Tague is excited for what the new year—and these roles—will bring.
“As a former dairy farmer myself, I look forward to never backing down in the fight to protect our farmers and the critical work they do keeping food on our tables and product in our stores,” Tague said. “We continue to face many obstacles, the largest of which being one-party control of government and the continued favoritism of New York City-centric interests. You can count on me to remain a loud and passionate voice for common sense in New York.”
Assembly Minority Conference Leader Will Barclay (R,C-Pulaski) said, “Chris Tague has been a fearless fighter for the people of his district, for our Conference and for the common-sense policies needed to get New York moving in the right direction. I’m happy to have him on our Conference leadership team. His firsthand experience has been invaluable as ranking member of the Assembly Agriculture Committee. As he continues in that role, New York’s farmers and the agricultural community will once again have Albany’s strongest voice working on their behalf.”
“Rural New Yorkers shouldn’t have to fight for respect; they deserve it. The Albany process must recognize this, and that’s what I’ll continue to fight for,” Tague concluded.

First Baptist Church
By Bill Combs
Cobleskill - Today the First Baptist Church of Cobleskill opened the time capsule located in the cornerstone of their building that was placed there in 1887, the time capsule needed to be opened as repair work to the foundation walls will soon begin. Terry Hughes, Peter Lindemann, and other church members along with the Cobleskill Historical Society were at today ’ s event. After a little persuasion the time capsule revealed what was put inside it 137 years ago. SOme of the items inside the sealed box was a bible, notes from the event on Sept 15th, 1887, two local newspapers from the area dated September 15th, 1887 , and five Indian Head pennies dated 1887. The church back then was part of the Worster Baptist Church Association, which consisted of eleven churches in the area.
