Andreessen Horowitz Bio + Health Fund and Bassett Healthcare Network Leverage Digital Health to Address Rural Healthcare Needs

Written By Editor on 11/7/22 | 11/7/22

Partnership will accelerate the New York-based rural health system’s strategic goals by connecting it with entrepreneurs and venture investors to empower its tech-enabled transformation

SAN FRANCISCO, November 7, 2022 -
Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) Bio + Health fund today announced a strategic partnership with Bassett Healthcare Network, an integrated health care system in central New York state. The collaboration aims to leverage digital healthcare technologies from a16z’s portfolio companies to address the inequities and systemic challenges of delivering high quality health care to rural patient populations through Bassett Healthcare Network. The two organizations share a common vision of broadly reimagining how digital health solutions and processes at scale may transform these valued, yet significantly under-resourced healthcare delivery networks.

“Health systems serving rural communities face challenges distinct from those in more densely populated areas, including less access to innovative tools and services that could help us better serve our patients and support our practitioners and care teams,” said Tommy Ibrahim, MD, MHA, President and CEO of Bassett Healthcare Network. “Partnering with a16z will significantly improve our access to the most innovative digital health technologies and, more broadly, allow us to together truly understand how rural health systems can implement effective, scalable tech-enabled solutions to improve patient health.”

The COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences continue to exacerbate the health disparities present in rural communities. While these systems struggle to address systemic issues, including the intensifying health care worker shortage and the needs of an aging population, investment and interest in digital health innovation have increased markedly as a potential solution. Next generation digital health tools and technologies present a potential lifeline for health care organizations with fewer resources than their urban and suburban counterparts.

Bassett Healthcare Network, whose history dates back more than a century, today provides care to thousands of people annually across five hospitals, more than two dozen community health centers, and over twenty school-based health centers across a 5,600 square mile service area. Through this partnership, Bassett Healthcare Network will have access to the companies a16z Bio + Health has backed as well as the broader a16z ecosystem, which comprises innovative companies in relevant fields including enterprise tech, fintech and consumer services. The a16z and Bassett teams will also collaborate to identify emerging areas of unmet need that could benefit from technology-enabled solutions.

The partnership between the two organizations is an element of Bassett Healthcare Network’s vision to leverage digital health to advance the patient experience, assure financial sustainability and position the organization for long-term growth. Already, several collaborations are underway with a16z’s portfolio of companies specifically in the areas of automation, clinical AI and home health; the a16z Bio + Health portfolio can be viewed here. The firm backs bold entrepreneurs who are engineering biology and reimagining healthcare, investing in founding teams from seed through growth stage.

“Bassett Healthcare Network is doing transformative work at the intersection of digital and rural health,” says Paul Uhrig, Chief Legal and Digital Health Officer for Bassett Healthcare Network. “This partnership with a16z and their portfolio companies opens the door for Bassett to not just better serve our patients but also create a framework and infrastructure that help build healthy rural communities across the country.”

Bassett Healthcare Network and a16z have formed an executive committee for the partnership to explore innovative technologies and platforms, align priorities and oversee implementation of the related tech-enabled transformation.

“Our mission at a16z Bio + Health is to partner with entrepreneurs dedicated to improving the sustainability of the healthcare ecosystem. Rural health care systems stand to gain more than perhaps all others in the ongoing transition to the tech-enabled future we are committed to bringing to fruition,” said Julie Yoo, General Partner at a16z. “The entrepreneurs we support are pursuing solutions that will push ahead that evolution to an improved and more accessible health care system regardless of where that care is provided. The a16z team shares with the forward-thinking leadership at Bassett Healthcare Network a deep-seated optimism about the healthcare innovation that will result from infusing digital health solutions into rural care networks.”

“The tech-enabled future of health requires alignment and partnership from stakeholders across the healthcare ecosystem,” said Marina Kusserow, Partner, Business Development for a16z Bio + Health. “a16z is proud to be both a catalyst and a convener as we help shape a better future of healthcare that we know is attainable.”

Fly Creek Cider Mill Honored

Written By Editor on 11/2/22 | 11/2/22

COOPERSTOWN - This Is Cooperstown, the official tourism promotion agency of Otsego County, congratulates Fly Creek Cider Mill & Orchard for being included on the “Best of the Best” list issued by the American Bus Association (ABA). The historic Mill will be featured in the November-December issue of ABA’s official magazine, Destinations.

ABA is the oldest, largest and one of the most trusted motorcoach and group tour associations in the American travel industry. Its annual “Best of the Best” list draws attention to industry members who continuously go above and beyond for group tours and the motorcoach industry as a whole. This is the seventh year that the organization has published the list, which features categories such as Adventure, Culture, Entertainment, Festivals & Events, Food & Beverage, Lodging, and Shopping.

Bill Michaels, the owner of the Fly Creek Cider Mill, bought the site in 1999 from his parents, who had operated it since 1962. The Mill itself dates to 1856 and offers guests the perfect mix of old and new touches, from a historic 1889 cider press to a brand-new tasting room, pond boardwalk and pavilion introduced earlier this year.

Fly Creek is a popular stop for motorcoach groups, which are drawn to the Cooperstown area by the region’s agricultural ties, historic sites and shopping. They get a combination of all those things – plus delicious food – during a visit to the Mill.

Though this award acknowledges the Cider Mill’s contribution to the group tour industry, Fly Creek also welcomes individual travelers of all ages. Anyone can tour the Mill; see the millpond ducks and geese; stock up on local foods; and enjoy fresh cider, donuts and pies.

Fly Creek enjoyed a very successful year in 2022, and this fall was incredibly busy thanks to leaf-peepers who know that Upstate New York has plenty of maple trees that rival what can be seen in New England. The Mill will close for the season on December 11, but when it reopens prior to Mother’s Day next May, it will introduce “Flight Tastings” from the Farm Winery for motorcoach tours. This new experience will give guests a chance to choose from hard ciders, apple or grape wines, spirts, craft beers, and sweet cider. They can enjoy all that in the Mill’s new second-story tasting room.

Why Beauty Matters: Film screening and discussion at Canon Free Library in Delhi

Written By Editor on 11/1/22 | 11/1/22

A screening of the documentary film “Why Beauty Matters” by the late British philosopher Sir Roger Scruton will be held at the Canon Free Library in Delhi on Sunday November 13 at 2:30 pm. A discussion following the film will be led by award-winning poet and writer Marly Youmans; publisher, public historian, and historic preservationist Maureen Krueger; neurologist Michael Miller; and Orthodox priest Father James Krueger. The library is located at 40 Elm Street in Delhi. This event is sponsored by Cloud-Bearing Mountain Christian Retreat and Saint Herman of Alaska Orthodox Church in Bovina. The event is free and open to all. For more information call 607-326-0052, email info@cbmountain.org, or visit www.cbmountain.org.

“Why Beauty Matters” presents a fascinating argument for the importance of beauty in our art and in our lives, and explores what truly is and is not beautiful, regardless of its beholder. Scruton contends that beauty has been systematically disappearing from our world. It is being replaced by a kind of expression that seeks to disturb and break moral taboos, to assert individualism, appeal to the novel, and to show the ugliness of our world without reference to what is beautiful and redemptive. As Scruton puts it, “The great artists of the past were aware that human life is full of chaos and suffering, but, they had a remedy for this and the name of that remedy was beauty. The beautiful work of art brings consolation in sorrow and affirmation in joy. It shows human life to be worthwhile.”

What: “Why Beauty Matters” documentary film screening and discussion.

Where: Canon Free Library, 40 Elm Street, Delhi, NY 13753.

When: Sunday November 13, 2:30 pm.

Cost: Free.

The event culminates with a cooking demo by Emma Shenandoah of the Wolf Clan of the Mohawk Nation (Akwesasne, NY) and a tasting for attendees.

Gather (directed by Sanjay Rawal, 2020) is an intimate portrait of the growing movement amongst Native Americans to reclaim their spiritual, political, and cultural identities through food sovereignty, while battling the trauma of centuries of genocide. The film follows Nephi Craig, a chef from the White Mountain Apache Nation (Arizona), opening an indigenous café as a nutritional recovery clinic; Elsie Dubray, a young scientist from the Cheyenne River Sioux Nation (South Dakota), conducting landmark studies on bison; and the Ancestral Guard, a group of environmental activists from the Yurok Nation (Northern California), trying to save the Klamath river. Gather was awarded Best Documentary Feature at the Red Nation Film Festival Awards and named a Critic’s Pick by the New York Times, both in 2020; in 2022 Gather won a James Beard Foundation Media Award for Best Documentary.

Gather’s director Sanjay Rawal will be present at the event. He is an Indian-American documentary film director with three feature-length films to his credit: Food Chains (2014), 3100: Run and Become (2018), and Gather (2020). Prior to filmmaking, Rawal spent 15 years working on grassroots peace-building campaigns and ran international development initiatives led by notable artists and philanthropists. Rawal has won two James Beard awards and received support from the Ford Foundation, NoVo, Schmidt Family Foundation, and others.

Also present at the event will be three principals of the First Nations Development Institute: A-dae Romero-Briones (Cochiti/Kiowa), Jona Charette (N. Cheyenne/Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa), and Marisa Page (Pawnee/Ponca/Comanche).

DEC Announces Leftover Deer Management Permits Available Nov. 1

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) Commissioner Basil Seggos announced that remaining Deer Management Permits (DMPs) in several Wildlife Management Units (WMUs) will be available to hunters beginning Nov.1. Applications for leftover DMPs will be accepted for the following WMUs: 1C, 3M, 3R, 3S (bowhunting-only), 4J (bowhunting-only), 7F, 7H, 7J, 7R, 8A, 8C (bowhunting-only), 8F, 8G, 8H, 8J, 8N, 8R, 9A, 9F, and 9G.

"In units with leftover Deer Management Permits, hunters can pick up another two tags to help meet New York State's management objectives," said Commissioner Seggos. "In these areas, DEC encourages hunters to hunt safely and responsibly and to prioritize doe harvest and share extra venison with friends, neighbors, and venison donation programs."

DMPs, which allow hunters to harvest antlerless deer, are issued for specific WMUs to control deer populations. In some WMUs, the DMP target has not been reached even after all applicants received permits during the initial application process. In these units, DEC will re-open the DMP application process on a first-come, first-served basis. Hunters may apply for up to two additional DMPs in these WMUs at any DEC license sales outlet beginning Tuesday, Nov. 1.

Leftover DMPs are not available by phone, mail, or internet. Applications must be made at license issuing outlets. Applicants who previously paid the $10 DMP application fee during the initial application period, or are exempt from the application fee, will not be charged for this additional application. Hunters who did not previously apply for a deer management permit are required to pay the $10 application fee.

During this extended application period, DEC will issue DMPs for an individual WMU until the target issuance quota is achieved. The status of permits will be reviewed each night, and as individual units are filled, they will be removed from the list of those available effective the following day. A list of units with available leftover DMPs will routinely be updated on DEC's website or via the DMP Hotline at 1-866-472-4332

EXHIBITION FEATURING PHOTOGRAPHY BY HALL OF FAME PITCHER RANDY JOHNSON PLANNED FOR 2023 AT FENIMORE ART MUSEUM IN COOPERSTOWN

Written By Editor on 10/27/22 | 10/27/22

The exhibition, Randy Johnson: Storytelling with Photographs, marks the Hall of Fame pitcher’s first-ever solo exhibition.

Fenimore Art Museum will host the exhibition, just one mile from The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

NEW EXHIBITION OPENING APRIL 1, 2023

Randy Johnson: Storytelling with Photographs
April 1 – September 17, 2023

Fenimore Art Museum, Cooperstown, NY

COOPERSTOWN, NY – Hall of Fame pitcher, Randy Johnson, shares his forty-year passion for photography in his first-ever solo exhibition at Fenimore Art Museum in Cooperstown, New York, on view April 1 – September 17, 2023. Randy Johnson: Storytelling with Photographs features an array of images captured by Johnson during his treks across Africa. The work includes intimate shots of the people he engaged with and the abundance of wildlife he encountered. Johnson’s accompanying written account partners with the vibrant imagery, weaving together a visually appealing grand tour of the continent.

“I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to travel the world and capture rare moments,” said Johnson. “All of my photos tell a story, but none of these are more meaningful than the ones I was able to collect during my time in Africa. The images reflect my experiences with the people and wildlife there.”

Randy Johnson: Storytelling with Photographs is the culmination of four visits to separate regions of the continent, with the goal of creating a visual document. The exhibition features sections on Ethiopia and its people, Rwanda and its silverback gorilla population, the great herd migrations of Eastern Africa, and portraits of various animals photographed in the wild. A total of 30 large prints will be on view.

Johnson’s career as a Major League pitcher is well documented, but his passion for photography is not as widely known. It began when he studied photojournalism at the University of Southern California from 1983-1985. Following his retirement from baseball in 2010, the five-time Cy Young Award winner was able to revive earlier aspirations and devote his full attention to the craft.

“Baseball was my livelihood, and it’s still a great interest to me, but it opened a lot of doors to my passion. Baseball was my life, essentially, from the age of seven until I retired at age 46. But then I was able to step away from it for a while and get back to photography.”

Johnson has frequently been spotted around the country photographing rock concerts and occasional sporting events. His work has been featured in publications such as Rolling Stone, Spin, and Metal Hammer. Johnson’s concert photography has even found its way into tour programs, posters, and books.

“Photography has taken me on an amazing journey, and it’s just the beginning,” Johnson added. “I look forward to visiting places I’ve never been, photographing things I’ve never seen, and sharing what I have learned along the way.”

Fenimore Art Museum will also feature a symposium on photography featuring Johnson and other respected photographers, plus programs specifically designed for children.

Fenimore Art Museum presents Randy Johnson: Storytelling with Photographs alongside its world-renowned collections of fine art, folk art, and Native American art, which includes The Thaw Collection of American Indian Art. Visit FenimoreArt.org for a complete list of current and upcoming exhibitions. Fenimore Art Museum is located one mile from The National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York.

“The Lion in Winter” Comes to Catskill’s Bridge Street Theatre

Written By Editor on 10/26/22 | 10/26/22

November 10 – 20

“Well, what family doesn’t have its ups and downs?”

Merry Christmas, 1183! King Henry II has just released his estranged wife Eleanor from prison so that the entire back-stabbing royal family can spend the holiday together. He’s getting on in years and a succession plan needs to be mapped out. But which of their three sons will end up on the throne? The stakes are high, the knives are out, and it looks like this will be one Christmas where nobody is going to get what they want.

For the final play in its 2022 Fall Season, Bridge Street Theatre in Catskill, generally renowned for its productions of new and innovative works, has chosen a true American classic. James Goldman’s 1966 “The Lion in Winter” will be presented on the theatre’s intimate “Priscilla” Mainstage for a two-weekend run November 10-20, 2022.

A notorious flop in its initial 1966 Broadway production, the play’s reputation was subsequently rehabilitated due in large part to its Oscar-winning 1968 film adaptation which starred Katharine Hepburn and Peter O’Toole. “The Lion in Winter” has since gone on to be recognized as a masterpiece of its genre and become an audience favorite on stages around the world.

Featured in the cast of the Bridge Street Theatre production will be Leigh Strimbeck as Eleanor, Steven Patterson as Henry, Seth McNeill as Richard, Michael Raver as Geoffrey, Orlando Grant as John, Christopher Joel Onken as Philip, and Geneva Turner as Alais. Bridge Street Theatre’s Artistic Director John Sowle directs and designs, with costumes by Michelle Rogers. The production will also feature a score of original incidental music commissioned from Minneapolis-based composer N. Jennings White. Production Stage Manager is Kiara Vedovino.

“The Lion in Winter” will be performed Thursdays – Saturday evenings at 7:30pm and Sundays at 2:00pm from November 10 – 20 in the theatre’s 84-seat “Priscilla” Mainstage, located at 44 West Bridge Street in the Village of Catskill.
