Filmed Locally - Asteroid

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 8/5/24 | 8/5/24

By Bradley Towle

SCHOHARIE & OTSEGO COUNTIES — Asteroid is a 2021 sci-fi comedy disaster film based and shot in Oneonta and Schoharie County during the Covid-19 pandemic in August 2020. The film follows a family of three who relocates from New York City to a remote home just outside of Oneonta. We learn early on that Spencer, the family patriarch, made the decision to move his wife, Lynn, and daughter, Zoe, back to his hometown after the death of his father, much to the chagrin of the teenage Zoe, who struggles to understand why they would have moved to a home with no internet and poor cell service. They barely have time to adapt to their new environs when NASA makes the rather inconvenient announcement that an asteroid is going to hit the United States. Specifically Oneonta. Specifically Spencer, Lynn, and Zoe's new home. While chaos ensues and many residents flee, some remain, including Spencer and, at first, his family, but they soon realize the madness of staying behind. At a town hall meeting, the mayor informs the remaining residents that Secret Caverns, "near Cobleskill," will be a safe location when the asteroid hits. The famed Schoharie County roadside attraction gets plenty of screen time in the film's last act as the refuge for the doomed residents of Oneonta. The entrance of Secret Caverns is so prominently displayed that Secret Cavern employees have reported increased calls from people who saw the phone number in Asteroid, which is currently streaming and finding a larger audience. At the helm of Asteroid are Oneonta natives and filmmakers Dylan Avery and Korey Rowe, who are perhaps best known for the Loose Change documentaries, which explored the events of 9/11 from the perspective that the U.S. government had planned the attacks. Cataclysm and conspiracy seem to be their thing, both of which have a decidedly more comedic and absurdist tone with 2021's Asteroid. Asteroid is currently streaming across several platforms.

Fireworks at Beekman Mansion

Fireworks to celebrate William Beekman and NYS joining the Union in 1788 at the Beekman Mansion on Friday, July 26 in Sharon Springs.

By Alexis Pencar

SHARON SPRINGS — The Beekman Boys, Dr. Brent Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, celebrated their namesake and the founder of the Beekman Mansion, William Beekman, this past weekend with a large fireworks display in Sharon Springs.

The date for this celebration of July 26th was significantly paired with New York State joining the Union on that day in 1788 and the arrival of William Beekman to the same property back in July 1788 as well!

The celebration kicked off around dark with an impressive fireworks display lasting for over 25 minutes that was seen and heard for miles as the booms echoed in the surrounding hills. In line with their motto of “kindness”, The Beekman Boys extended invitations to neighbors who were able to drive up and watch from a field off of Slate Hill Road.

The history of Beekman and his influence in the area and the establishment of the County itself run deep. William Beekman was born in June 1767 and according to an online historical database “was a "boy soldier" in the Revolutionary War, and as an adult became a successful and respected businessman with a general store situated across the road from where he would eventually build his Mansion (in Sharon Springs). He married Joanna Lowe, and had eight children, only two of whom made it past the age of twenty. Beekman was appointed the first judge of the Court of Common Pleas of Schoharie County in 1795 and held the position until 1833. He also served as State Senator from 1799-1802. William Beekman died in 1845 at the age of 78 and was buried on the property.”

The Beekman Boys, Ridge and Josh Kilmer-Purcell, purchased the Beekman Mansion back in 2007 and gained fame in 2010 with their hit TV series “The Fabulous Beekman Boys” that took place in Sharon Springs. In 2012, they made waves again by competing and winning The Amazing Race, Season 21. They have since spread kindness and goodwill around the globe with their highly successful international brand Beekman 1802. The Kindness Shop on Main Street in Sharon Springs is well worth the visit, stocked with all their famous products and friendly faces too!

Car Show Coming to Cobleskill

By Joshua Walther

COBLESKILL - On Friday afternoon, the Cobleskill Village Board held a special meeting to discuss the Wheels Along Main Street event and a handful of appointments and resignations.

The car show is held by the Rusty Bolt Gang, a well-known organization based out of Richmondville. They often collaborate with local businesses and they’ve held a number of seasonal car-themed events, like Cool Cars and Cones in Warnerville and their upcoming Trunk or Treat in Schoharie.

This time, the event plans to run the length of Main Street in the heart of Cobleskill on Friday, September 20th. Everyone from passersby to enthusiasts is welcome to peruse the collection of vehicles and head down to Veteran’s Park for food and other vendors.

After some deliberation by the Village Board, Mayor Rebecca Stanton-Terk and the other members approved the event, setting plans in motion for another fall car convention.

In other news, the Village Board discussed two resignations from their staff, as well a pair of new appointments to other roles.

Both Heidi-Lynn Wagner-Monte, the former Deputy Clerk-Treasurer, and former Patrolman Logan Wood sent in their final letters to the Board, both of which were accepted with an effective date for the month of August.

Shortly thereafter, Maureen Loupin was appointed to Ms. Wagner-Monte’s station of Deputy Clerk-Treasurer, and Chandler Willoughby was appointed to a full-time laborer with the sewer treatment plant.

Finally, after all other business had concluded, the Town of Cobleskill notably expressed their interest in changing the 2009 contract with the Village for rendering highway services.

This has been an ongoing issue for several months, as the contract has since expired and both parties are weighing their options of what would be best for them. However, no action has been taken at this time.

SUNY Cobleskill Selected for Latest Student Success Equity Intensive Program Cohort

COBLESKILL – SUNY Cobleskill is one of eight colleges nationwide selected by the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU) to join its fourth cohort of member institutions participating in the Student Success Equity Intensive (SSEI). This multiyear initiative is designed to help increase the academic success of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students, as well as address the equity gaps these demographics experience. The initiative is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.

“Being selected as a member institution of the SSEI is a privilege and will help us greatly in our mission to make education accessible for all students, but especially those from historically underserved populations,” said Dr. Marion Terenzio, president of SUNY Cobleskill. “Working with AASCU and other member institutions will give us the tools to enhance our support systems through an ecosystem of shared information and ideas that will ensure every student has the resources they need to have a successful college experience at Coby."

Following rigorous application process, AASCU selected SUNY Cobleskill for its newest SSEI cohort, along with

Adams State University (CO), East Georgia State College, Missouri State University, North Carolina A&T State University, SUNY Potsdam, Western Michigan University, Winona State University (MN).

“We are proud to add this new cohort to the SSEI program to help more institutions close equity gaps among Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students,” said Jacquelyn R. Jones, AASCU’s assistant vice president for student success. “Addressing barriers that preclude achievement is instrumental in helping diverse students succeed during and after college.”

Participating SSEI schools are required to assemble a team of campus leaders that includes presidents, provosts, and student success and data experts. During this team-learning experience, schools receive customized support to help them make data-driven decisions that center the realities of Black, Latinx, Indigenous, and low-income students. Throughout the program, members become better equipped to tackle the barriers these students face, so they no longer stand in the way of academic achievement.

Cohort members participate in in-person and virtual learning with peers at other institutions, having access to a variety of resources, such as webinars and online modules. Additionally, SSEI provides access to subject matter experts who can offer advice on equity, student success, analytics, advising, institutional transformation, and systems and strategic planning.

SSEI is made up of institutions with rural, suburban, and urban campuses from around the country. The latest cohort includes one Hispanic-serving institution, one predominantly Black institution, and one historically Black college and university. The selected institutions serve 57,402 students with an average Pell eligibility of 37.50%. Including this fourth cohort, 60 colleges are members of SSEI.

The Cobleskill Campus Child Care Center Receives USDA Farm to School Planning Grant

COBLESKILL — The Cobleskill Campus Child Care Center (CCCCC) is pleased to announce it is one of just nine New York grantees to receive a Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grant from the USDA. The $43,000 grant, with support provided by partners, totals over $65,000 to fund a year-long planning process to bring a Farm to School initiative to Schoharie County’s youngest eaters.

CCCCC is partnering with with the Bassett Research Institute (Cooperstown, NY), Wild Tomato Consulting (Cobleskill, NY), Schoharie County Agricultural Development, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego and Schoharie Counties, SUNY Cobleskill and local farmers to develop an action plan to bring locally produced foods and garden education to the childcare center based on SUNY Cobleskill’s campus during the next year. The project has already mobilized a steering committee to guide this work, with representatives from the partners named above as well as Center staff and parents.

CCCCC provides two full scratch-cooked meals and one snack to more than 70 children ages 0- 5 each day, with summer camp programs including school aged children up to age 12.

“We could not be more thrilled to be a recipient of a Farm to School grant,” CCCCC Executive Director Christy Scott said, “here in Schoharie County, we are surrounded by farmland and have a rich agricultural heritage so we are excited to connect local producers to our early childhood program. We know that investing in the introduction of fresh and healthy foods at a young age and connecting students to where their food comes from will build lifelong healthy habits. We are looking forward to strengthening our relationships with community partners, farmers and advocates to provide more fresh, locally-sourced foods and garden education to the children that we serve.”

Earlier this month, Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the USDA awarded a record-breaking $14.3 million in Patrick Leahy Farm to School Grants to 154 projects in 43 states, the District of Columbia, Guam and Puerto Rico. These investments will help 1.9 million children eat more tasty, nutritious foods in school, while supporting farmers and producers in their local and regional communities. This investment supports the Biden-Harris Administration’s National Strategy on Hunger, Nutrition and Health to increase healthy eating by 2030.

Farm to school opens opportunities for children to learn about nutrition and agriculture through hands-on experiences, such as planting, watering, harvesting and tasting new fruits and vegetables. The program also provides a pathway for more children to achieve nutrition security, which is the consistent and equitable access to healthy, safe and affordable food. These initiatives also may positively impact the local economy, as more dollars spent on local food from local farmers keeps money within the community. USDA continues to show its commitment to equity by reaching historically underserved and marginalized communities

through this year’s farm to school grants; more than one-third (35%) of awarded projects serve rural areas similar to Schoharie County.

August Schedule for Veteran Events

By Alexis Pencar

Check out the busy August schedule of events provided by the Schoharie County Veterans’ Service Agency! This group is operated by Peer-to-Peer Veteran Advocate Kris Hofeller. Kris goes above and beyond in this position and attends nearly every event!

From Kris:

The Schoharie County Veteran Service Office's mission is: All one fight, no one left behind “This is the way". We support veterans and

help them adjust back into civilian life, but our most important task is to combat veteran suicide. Here in Schoharie county, our activities are not just for veterans but also for their families.

We started with a veteran's breakfast and a lunch. Now, at a year and a half later, we have an equine assisted therapy program, camping retreats, caving day trips, canoeing day trips, hiking day trips, fishing excursions, and range days. We also have several breakfast and lunch locations at varying dates and times throughout the month.

Our accredited Veterans Service Officer can assist in submitting Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) disability claims. We collaborate with neighboring counties to support and share in their activities. We welcome veterans outside of Schoharie county and we often have out of state veterans attending our retreats. This all goes to the mission of bringing veteran suicide from seventeen a day to ZERO.

If you have questions, want to get involved, or just need to talk, please do not hesitate to reach out to Kris Hofeller at (518) 295-8360, Cell: (518) 929-2832, or email Kristian.Hofeller@co.schoharie.ny.us.
