Wright Solving Snow-Related Issues

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 1/9/26 | 1/9/26

By Bradley Towle

GALLUPVILLE — It has been a rough winter in upstate New York. The first snow fell in December, and it has remained cold and snowy ever since. These early, persistent winters mean long, often grueling shifts for highway department crews who are out clearing the roads while most of us sleep. It can be a thankless task, frequently met with complaints from residents rather than gratitude. In addition to the usual challenges that come with a particularly "northeast" winter, the Town of Wright Highway Department has endured some additional difficulties recently.

While out clearing the roads during a recent Sunday night ice storm, the town's newest plow truck flipped on Dugan Hill, leaving the driver "bruised up" but otherwise okay. The truck's fate, however, remains in question.

This past weekend, during yet another snowfall, another truck had to be taken off the road due to a fuel leak. As Highway Superintendent Keith Kearney explained in a recent Facebook post, the crew usually covers "84 miles and 2 county roads" with four trucks and four drivers. Kearney has asked for patience as they work to address the setbacks. Kearney noted that the county will "have a truck together to use" and had hopes that another would be up and running by week's end. While still down a full-time driver, a part-time employee will be available to pinch-hit. "It's not fun for us either," concluded Kearney in his post.

As of Wednesday, the Wright Highway Department's fortunes had begun to turn. A fuel leak had been patched, and Schoharie County supplied Wright with a spare vehicle, bringing their truck count back up to four while the flipped truck remained out of service. A formerly part-time worker will begin full-time on Monday, January 12, and the driver involved in the accident on Dugan Hill has returned to work as of January 5, bringing the driver count back up to four as well. "It's been a hectic winter on and off," said Kearney, who is understandably relieved to have gotten through Wright's recent rough patch.

One notable change is that the truck borrowed from the county differs from the out-of-service vehicle it's replacing. In the new vehicle, the sander is in the back, while Wright's vehicle is in the front. So don't be alarmed if you see a plow truck driving backwards down a hill on an icy day; they are only ensuring a safer ride for themselves.

Middleburgh Student Solid Future in Family Business with BOCES

Elijah MacNeil, Wyatt Strobeck, and Hunter David

Wyatt Strobeck

SCHOHARIE – A Middleburgh High School senior is forging a bright future at Capital Region BOCES with plans to join the family business.

Wyatt Strobeck is in the second year of the Welding and Metal Fabrication program at the Career and Technical Education (CTE) Center – Schoharie Campus. He is among more than five-dozen students enrolled in the program on the Schoharie and Albany campuses.

“The program is pretty fun because you get a lot of freedom in terms of what you want to weld and you can work on projects from home as long as they are part of the curriculum,” said Strobeck.

One of those projects he worked on recently is a 20-sided die that may serve as a holiday ornament or a more generic decoration.

“I am enjoying challenging myself,” he said.

Strobeck is not new to welding. He said he has been practicing the craft “for a long time.”

“Thanks to my grandfather, I knew a lot before I came to BOCES. But at BOCES, I have been able to hone my skills and tighten up what I know,” Strobeck said.’

His grandfather, Brent Pruiksma, owns Iron Horse Welding in Medusa, Greene County, and started Strobeck in the trade at a young age.

“I plan to go to work for him when I graduate and continue the family business,” Strobeck said.

Students in the two-year Welding and Metal Fabrication program learn American Welding Society standards and earn certifications that prepare them for a career in the welding industry. Auto Racing News

A small section of the cars on display at the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich.

By Tom Coughlin

The Outlaw Predator Series will celebrate its 2025 racing season with an Awards Banquet and fundraiser tomorrow night. The event is open to the public and will be held at the Town of Florida Town Hall at 167 Fort Hunter Road, Amsterdam. Doors open at 4:00 p.m. and dinner—a large taco bar with your choice of beef, chicken, pulled pork, fish, shrimp, and taco salad—is at 6:00 p.m. Adults age 16 and up are $25, kids under 16 are $10, and children under 5 are free. This includes food and soft drinks. Bring your own beer. Various raffles will also be available to help raise funds for the 2026 season.

The Ranch at Carlisle has posted its upcoming 2026 event schedule. Saturday, Jan. 24, will be the AMA NYS Ice Racing Championship & Northeast Snow Drag Championship. Fans will see fast racing on prepared ice and snow. A heated tent and concessions are available, with spectator-friendly viewing areas. Spectator admission is $25 per person, with kids 6 and under free. Their winter schedule continues on Feb. 14 with the Winterfest Snow Drag & Ice Race combo (raindate for NYS Championship) and concludes on Feb. 21 with the Winterfest Snow Drag & Ice Race finale (second rain date for NYS Championship).

Good news for racers and fans in the Northeast was received on New Year's Eve afternoon when Howard Commander, owner of Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, N.Y., sent out a press release confirming the operator of the speedway going forward. Marcy Mangino DeVore, the widow of the late promoter Lyle DeVore, along with Pete Scully, have been charged with the management of "The Great Race Place" for the 2026 racing season. They will be aided by a team of returning track employees, staff members, race teams, and sponsors dedicated to carrying forward the legacy built by longtime track manager and promoter Lyle DeVore, who passed away in December 2025 after a hard-fought, four-year battle with cancer. Marcy and Pete are currently developing the 2026 race event schedule and planning for the 61st season opener on Friday, April 17, 2026, a Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified event.

On New Year's Day, our other Friday night big car track, Utica-Rome Speedway, released its tentative schedule for 2026 at the Vernon oval known as the "Home of Heroes." Open practice is scheduled for all classes on Saturday, April 11, with a rain date of Sunday, April 12. The 2026 points season will start on Friday, April 24, and end on Friday, Aug. 28. Weekly racing divisions will consist of DIRTcar 358 Modifieds, DIRTcar Crate 602 Sportsman, DIRTcar Pro Stocks, and Limited Sportsman. The schedule will feature four Sunday shows headlined by the Big Block Modified division, accompanied by a variety of other divisions. The 360 Winged Sprint Cars of the Empire Super Sprints will visit twice, including the annual Cole Cup on Sunday, Sept. 6. The 305 Winged Sprint Cars of the CRSA will also visit twice. The Super DIRTcar Series for 358 Modifieds will visit on Wednesday, July 15, and the SDS for Big Block Modifieds will visit on Wednesday, Aug. 19. There will be two five-dollar Fan Appreciation nights on Friday, May 22, and Friday, July 10. The schedule is subject to change.

Annually, there are roughly 2,000 entries in the Tulsa Shootout, and this year’s 41st annual event in Tulsa, Oklahoma, was on track to hit that mark. The Tulsa Shootout is the world's largest event for Micro Sprints and is held indoors at the SageNet Center. One area racer was out there attempting to advance through the "alphabet soup" of qualifying to make it into the A-Main features. Preston Trautschold of Roscoe, N.Y., who races locally in the Junior Slingshot division and was the 2025 track champion at both Utica-Rome Speedway and Glen Ridge Motorsports Park, was competing in the Junior Sprint division against some of the best racers from throughout the world. Heat races, Last Chance Qualifiers, and B-Mains bring the number of qualifying events up to 427 before the six A-Main features are run to see who goes home with a Golden Driller Trophy. The six divisions and the overall winners were: Junior Sprints, Jax Wittmer; Stock Non-Wing, Cullen Hutchison; Outlaw Winged, Daison Pursley; Restricted A Class, Braxon Vasconcellos; A Class Winged, Frank Flud; and Outlaw Non-Wing, Jonathan Beason. Trautschold made it into the LCQ on Saturday, where he started 12th and unfortunately finished 12th after having some issues; only the top eight were able to advance into the A-Main. Preston was pleased with what he accomplished and that he was able to carry the New York State flag for the Parade of States. Drivers taking part in the Shootout with a national following included NASCAR Cup Series driver Ty Gibbs, NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Larson and his children Owen and Audrey, former NASCAR Cup Series champion Kyle Busch and his son Brexton, and former NASCAR Cup Series driver Ryan Newman and his daughter Brooklyn.

Racers and fans endured freezing cold temperatures and wind chill to attend the inaugural Chill Factor Enduro 50-lap event at the "Track of Champions." 42 drivers were entered into the Chill Factor Enduro on Thursday, Jan. 1, 2026, to welcome in the new year with Fonda Speedway's earliest-ever opening date. When the 50-lap enduro was finished, Josh Kane was declared the first feature winner for 2026 to begin the track's 75th anniversary season.

The local racing community has lost another racer as Fonda Speedway Hall of Fame member Ron Quackenbush, age 85, of Gloversville, passed away last week. He was the driver of the no. 333.

The Adirondack Motor Enthusiast Club had over 150 former members and racers in attendance at its Racers Reunion last Saturday. A good time was had by all.

You never know who you might encounter when checking out one of the area museums. While touring the Northeast Classic Car Museum in Norwich on Sunday, I happened to meet up with Crate 602 Sportsman champion Payton Talbot and his family. Payton mentioned that this was his first time visiting the very impressive display of motorized history. He also said that he was working on finalizing plans to race in Florida next month. If you have thought about going to the museum but were concerned about mobility, there are a limited number of assistance tools available, such as mobility scooters, wheelchairs, walkers, and children's umbrella strollers. There are also a number of benches spread throughout the facility where you can take a break.

Registration has begun for the much-anticipated Fonda Speedway Race Car Show at the Via/Port Mall in Rotterdam in March. Registration can be done by sending an email to Jamie Page at jpage15@stny.rr.com. Be sure to register and contact your graphics person to be ready for the popular event.

Here are more dates to mark on your calendar: Afton Motorsports Park will tentatively hold practice on Saturday, April 4, 11, and 18, and will open on Saturday, April 25, with Big Block/Small Block Modifieds, Crate 602 Sportsman, Limited Sportsman, Mini Mods, 4-Cylinders, and Factory Stocks.

Amazon Breaks Ground

SCHOHARIE — Site work was underway in mid-December for the new Amazon distribution warehouse near I-88, Exit 23 in Schoharie. Equipment was on-site and excavation had started until a snowstorm hit the area. Due to the cold and snowy weather, work has come to a halt and equipment has been removed from the site. Mother Nature has not cooperated with what could have been an early start to construction.

Special thanks to Bob Vedder for the info and photo.

All About Racing

Josh Kane of Esperance was the winner of the “Chill Factor” Enduro event at Fonda Speedway on New Year's Day.  Track photo

By Ed & Betty Biittig

As 2026 begins, Howard Commander, owner of the Albany-Saratoga Speedway in Malta, has announced the appointment of Marcy Mangino DeVore and Pete Scully as the management team for the esteemed dirt track's 2026 race season. Marcy previously worked alongside her husband, Lyle DeVore, until his passing in December following a four-year battle with cancer. Lyle had served as promoter and manager since 2012, when Commander initially leased the track from the Richards family before acquiring it in 2014. Pete Scully has also been an integral part of the DeVores' leadership team since their tenure began.

Under Lyle DeVore's dedicated guidance, the Albany-Saratoga Speedway achieved national recognition as a premier dirt track, and in 2022, DeVore was honored by his peers as the ARPY Promoter of the Year.

Regarding the appointments of Marcy DeVore and Pete Scully, Commander stated, "Marcy and Pete have performed these responsibilities alongside Lyle for many years and have excelled in their roles. They possess a comprehensive understanding of what is required." Both will maintain their respective positions, supported by a capable team of returning track employees, race teams, and sponsors, all committed to preserving Lyle's legacy.

Marcy and Pete are actively preparing the 2026 race schedule and coordinating the 61st season opener on Friday, April 17, 2026, which will feature a Super DIRTcar Series Big Block Modified event.

The 75th anniversary season at Fonda Speedway commenced with its earliest opening in the track's history, taking place on New Year’s Day. Despite challenging weather conditions, including cold temperatures, strong winds, and snow and ice on the track surface, a dedicated group of fans attended, and 42 vehicles participated in the 50-lap “Chill Factor” Enduro, competing for a top prize of $500.

Josh Kane of Esperance secured his position in Fonda Speedway's record books by winning this historically early opening event. Kane, who typically competes in the Sportsman division at Fonda, also claimed victory in the 50-lap Enduro during the Montgomery County Open weekend last September.

Kane now joins a distinguished group that includes Jack Johnson, Fonda’s most winning driver with eight opening day victories. Lou Lazzaro and Stewart Friesen share seven wins each. Dave Lape and Pete Corey followed with five wins apiece, while Jeff Trombley has four, and Bobby Varin has three. Several others, Jim Luke, C.D. Coville, Danny Johnson, Matt DeLorenzo, Pat Ward, and Matt Sheppard have each two opening day wins. Meanwhile, a number of drivers can claim one opening day victory: Buddy Shuman, Chiuck Kotwica, Irv Taylor, Bill Wimble, Tom Kotary, Kenny Shoemaker, Don Wayman, Rene Charland, Maynard Forrette, Dave Pelczar, Pep Pepicelli, Jimmy Horton, Bob McCreadie, Mike Romano, Dave Camara, Brett Hearn, Tim McCreadie, Mitch Gibbs, Ronnie Johnson, Mike Mahaney, Justin Boehler, Tim Fuller, and Michael Maresca.

Next on the 2026 Fonda schedule is the annual Race Car Show at ViaPort Rotterdam March 20-22 during mall hours.  Cars move into the mall on Thursday, March 19 and move out at the close of business March 22.

Until next time please send all news and/or comments to biittig@yahoo.com.

History at the Old Stone Fort - Music Box & Gun Flints

Regina Music Box

Likely used in a Schoharie County tavern, this box produces sounds using a set of pins placed on a revolving cylinder. The box contains the following songs, Home Sweet Home, The Mocking bird, The Blue Bells of Scotland, Old Folks at Home, Sweet By & By, and Robin Adair. It was produced by Swiss based company Henry Gautschi & Sons, Manufacturers and Importers. Donated by Mrs. Walter MC Gill in memory of Archibald H.S. Smith and Ruth Brand Smith and shared with us by the Old Stone Forts Clay Edmunds.

Gun Flints

Gun flints were a crucial component to the flintlock musket which was first introduced in the 16th century. These small pieces of flint were held in place by a clamp and struck by the gun cock once the trigger was pulled, creating a small explosion inside the barrel which allowed the gun to fire the musket ball.
