Magic On Main To Offer Special Pricing for Seniors and Veterans This Fall

WINDHAM - Come join Magician Sean Doolan for Magic on Main – An Intimate Parlor Experience, a magic show in his private library located in a historic building on Main Street in Windham, New York. Sean will weave his very personal story of transitioning from a trial lawyer to a magician in interactive, mind-blowing magical routines. In this parlor show, Sean will demonstrate the limitations of the human mind through techniques he learned as a student of the ancient art of sleight of hand, and a lifetime as a trial lawyer.

Two special shows on Thursday, October 7^th and Thursday, October 14^th will be performed at 8pm for $5 a ticket for seniors, veterans, current service members, or law enforcement and their companions (general admission is $10). Regularly priced shows (no discounts offered), at $10 per ticket are on Friday, October 8^th, Saturday, October 9^th, Sunday, October 10^th, Friday, October 15^th, Saturday, October 23^rd and Saturday, October 30^th. Education Room of Cannon House To Be Dedicated to Mary Jane Henderson

The Delhi Historical Society (DHS) will open the Cannon House located at 47 Main Street in Delhi on Saturday, September 25 from 10 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. To celebrate the Village of Delhi's Bicentennial, exhibits will include memorabilia from the sesquicentennial celebration fifty years ago.

At noon, DHS will host a dedication ceremony to name the education room in the Cannon House after the late Mary Jane Henderson, who was a staunch supporter of DHS and integral to its success since its inception in 2008.

From 11 a.m. until 1 p.m., Mary Jane Henderson's final compilation of stories, Now Hear This: What's My Line, A Unique Collection of Original Donkey and Horse Stories will be on sale. Proceeds from the sales will be split between DHS and the Little Brook Farm Sanctuary in Old Chatham, NY.

The Delhi Historical Society works to promote history and historical research in Delhi. New members are always welcome to join DHS. Those interested in joining the effort to preserve Delhi's rich history can become a member by sending a check for $10 made payable to DHS to 5 Elm Street, Delhi, NY, 13753. Any donation is appreciated and helps the mission.

The next DHS program is scheduled for Saturday, October 2 in partnership with the Village of Delhi's Bicentennial Committee. It will include a walking tour of Delhi pipe organs. The tour will begin at the First Presbyterian Church on Clinton Street at 10:00 a.m. and will conclude at St. John's Episcopal Church on Main Street at 12:00 noon. Orchestra of Original Instruments with Mark Stewart Oct 9th

Blackdome is pleased to announce two events with Mark Stewart on October 9th in Windham. Mark is a multi-instrumentalist, guitarist, composer and instrument designer. He will be conducting his instrument making workshop The O of Oi (Orchestra of Original Instruments) during the day as part of Windham Mountain's annual Homecoming, and he then performs a solo concert in the evening. Blackdome is excited to be presenting the workshop in partnership with Windham Mountain, and this takes place from 12:30-1:30pm on the back patio of the base lodge. Attendees will build simple instruments, create pieces and play them in small groups and as a whole large ensemble. The Skyride to the top of the mountain will be open, with food and drinks available at the BBQ and Bar. Live music from 11am-3pm from David Kraai & Saddle Tramps! Come join in on the fun and bring the family!

TelePulmonology Comes to Bassett’s School-Based Health Centers

Last spring Bassett’s School Based Health Centers (SBHC) launched telepulmonology services to connect its young patients with important sub-specialist care.

“School-Based Health is all about increasing health care access for our young people,” says Jane Hamilton, RN, School-Based Health Practice Manager. “These tele-visit consults are more comfortable in a familiar office and don’t require parents to miss a full day of work to travel for an appointment. This helps ensure the kids can get the care they need.”

The distance between Dr. Karen Zuidema Voter, pediatric pulmonology specialist at the University of Rochester Medical Center, and her patients is bridged by real time telehealth technology and the SBHC’s practitioners.

“We complete the physical requirements of the exam,” explains Hamilton. “The SBHC practitioner onsite listens through a stethoscope plugged into the computer. Meanwhile, Dr. Voter listens to the lung sounds through headphones in Rochester. If Dr. Voter needs something examined—like whether the patient’s abdomen is sensitive—the practitioner will relate what she feels while Dr. Voter watches the child’s face for signs of pain.”

Forward Momentum

Telepulmonology is SBHC’s newest telehealth service, but it is not its first, nor will it be its last. “We were the recipients of a HRSA Telemedicine Grant for School Based Health Centers,” says Hamilton. “COVID-19 really escalated telehealth for some practices within Bassett, but we’ve been doing it for over four years.”

SBHC started their telehealth program with psychiatric visits. They were simpler to implement since the visits don’t require any specialized equipment. These visits were able to greatly reduce the wait time for medication management appointments. Meanwhile, telemedicine between SBHC clinics allowed practitioners at one site to quickly see patients at another site when help was needed more urgently.

Telepulmonology represents SBHC’s first foray into sub-specialties. The volume of demand is far smaller than for psychiatric visits—but the services are also very valuable. “This program does wonders for our patients’ experience and access to care,” says Dr. Monica Brané, chief of pediatrics for the Bassett Healthcare Network. “Primary care pediatricians are well-equipped to treat and control typical asthma and pulmonary conditions. But kids struggling with rarer pulmonary conditions need the insights of a sub-specialist. SBHC’s telepulmonology services make it easier, faster, and more affordable to get these kids the help they need. This is telemedicine at its best.”

This finite group size made telepulmonology an opportunity to work out technical bugs and establish some effective standardized procedures. If this program continues to succeed, SBHC hopes to expand to pediatric gastrointestinal, neurological and endocrinological sub-specialties.

Outward Momentum

At its rollout, telepulmonology became available to all 21 SBHC sites. “During our planning, we estimated that SBHC would have 12 to 15 telepulmonology referrals in a year,” says Hamilton. “From when we started in March of this year, we’ve already had seven. That might represent a backlog that will soon level off, but for now we’re now ahead of schedule! Either way, there’s space in the program for more patients.”

As a result, since its launch the program has expanded to other Bassett pediatric offices in Cooperstown and Oneonta.

“This was hard work,” says Hamilton. “But I think the time was well-spent.”

NYSP responds to physical dispute in Delaware County

On September 13, 2021 shortly before 8:00 p.m., New York State Police at Oneonta responded to a report of a physical domestic dispute at a residence on State Highway 28 in the town of Meredith.

During the physical dispute, one person was stabbed and later flown to Albany Medical Center where they were treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

There is no threat to the public. The incident remains under investigation.

Audubon Hawkwatch Open House in Oneonta to be held on October 2 from 10am-2pm

Featuring Hawk ID Workshop, Live Raptors, Trail Hike and Special Activities for Children

On Saturday, October 2 from 10 AM to 2 PM, the Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society will host an open house at the DOAS Sanctuary and Hawkwatch on Grange Hall Spur Road, Oneonta. The event is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be available throughout the day.

PLEASE NOTE: Masks are not required for outdoor activities when distancing is possible, however they are required if people are in closer proximity (portions of the trail hike, in-the-barn sales, etc.).

Thousands of raptors of 15 species are counted each fall as they concentrate along the ridges overlooking Oneonta during their migration south for the winter months. The Delaware-Otsego Audubon Society has operated the Franklin Mountain Hawkwatch to survey hawks and eagles migrating past their wildlife sanctuary in the Town of Davenport for over 25 years. Volunteers count hawks, eagles and vultures passing the site on most days from late August through December. The site is noted for its flights of Golden Eagles and Red-tailed Hawks. In some years, over 200 Golden Eagles and more than 2000 Red-tailed Hawks have been recorded passing the site on their way south. The best flights generally occur on days with north or northwest winds, usually following cold fronts.

Open House Schedule

At 10:00am, one of the Franklin Mountain hawk counters will conduct a workshop on how to identify flying hawks followed at 11:00am with a trail walk through the Sanctuary which will end at the Hawkwatch. During the Trail Walk portion of the event, at ~11am, new DOAS Board Director, Rob Katz will lead children’s activities in the field area near the Sanctuary Barn. At 12:30pm, Wildlife Rehabilitator, Missy Runyan from the Friends of the Feathered and Furry Wildlife Center will feature live raptors.

A note from photographer Nick Kelsh:

I recently taught the first Nick Kelsh iPhone Photography Workshop… For Kids! at The Bright Hill Literary Center in Treadwell, NY. It was a five day event. I had an intensive, fun curriculum planned and lots I wanted to teach these kids about taking pictures. I was in good shape.

By 11 AM on day one it became clear that several of these precocious "twenty-first century techie kids" knew almost as much about using their iPhone cameras as I did. They didn’t know as much about photography, mind you, but they were pretty good with the bells and whistles on the phone. I had to regroup and quick. I had to fill four and a half days with meaningful content.

Here’s what I did: I quickly invented photo assignments. I even made it a competition! They were thrilled!

We had a stop watch to make it official, and Anthony the college intern as a judge.

The Franklin Farmers’ Market is pleased to welcome Jason Starr to the Music at the Market stage on Sunday, September 19th, 2021, 11:00 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Jason Starr is a guitar player and singer who has been performing in the area since he arrived in Franklin with his wife and daughter in 2010. He has played venues such as the B-Side Ballroom, The Walton Theatre, Castle on the Delaware, The Oneonta, Otego, Cooperstown, and Franklin Farmers’ Markets, and the Franklin Holiday Market. Playing solo and with bands of varying lineups, he plays in the genres of Bluegrass, Blues, Americana, The Great American Songbook, Motown... all of which he puts under the big genre umbrella of Folk Music. He is a Teaching Artist with the Creating Rural Opportunities Partnership (CROP) program in local schools. The performance is FREE to attend. Tables and chairs are available, and guests are welcome to bring their own seats as well.

The Market is open 10am to 2pm in the Village of Franklin on Institute Street and includes vendors from Franklin and surrounding towns. Tague Announces Rensselaerville Library Grant

Assemblyman Chris Tague announced over $15,000 in grant

funding that has been awarded to two different library projects within the 102nd Assembly

District through the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Library.

The RCS Community Library in Ravena will be receiving $7,057 to update its HVAC system to

improve indoor air quality.

The Rensselaerville Library will be given $9,734 to add air

conditioning to the Annex portion of their building by installing ductless mini-split units.

“Our libraries have become more important than ever, especially as our personal and

professional lives become further reliant on technology and the internet,” said Tague. “I am

proud to announce this critical funding for these libraries so that they can continue to offer

services and events to the public that are educational and bring us closer together within our

communities.”

CWC Approves Septic System Repairs and Replacements and Future Stormwater Projects

On September 7, the Catskill Watershed Corporation (CWC) Board of Directors approved funding for several projects in the Septic and Stormwater Programs.

21 homeowners and businesses in 15 towns in Delaware, Greene, Schoharie, and Ulster Counties were awarded reimbursement grants for replacement septic systems. Year to date, CWC has funded over 140 septic repairs and replacements throughout the Watershed.

Two property owners were approved for reimbursement funding from the CWC Future Stormwater Program for costs to comply with stormwater requirements of the NYC Watershed Regulations. A property owner in the Town of Woodstock, Ulster County was approved funding for design costs of a Stormwater Pollution Prevention Plan (SWPPP). Stormwater controls included the installation of three rain gardens, vegetated swales, plunge pools, inlet and outlet drainage repairs and a stormwater pond. New property owners were awarded funding for post construction stormwater control measures solely required by NYCDEP in the Town of Kortright, Delaware County as well.

Homeowners in the Town of Hunter, Greene County and Bovina, Delaware County were approved for Stormwater reimbursement grants from the MOA 145 Program. Both homeowners were required to implement Individual Residential Stormwater Plans (IRSP) per the NYCDEP Watershed Rules and Regulations. Among the components funded by CWC were rain gardens and drainage swales.

The CWC is a non-profit, Local Development Corporation responsible for several environmental protection, economic development, and education programs in the New York City Watershed West of the Hudson River. www.cwconline.org

Delgado Announces Statement Commemorating September 11th

Today, U.S. Representative Antonio Delgado (NY-19) released the following statement on the twentieth anniversary of the 9/11 attacks in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania:

“Twenty years ago today, our nation, our way of life, and our freedom was attacked. In a single day, we lost almost 3,000 Americans in New York, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. For two decades, this day has marked loss and pain. But it also reminds us what service, strength, resiliency, and unity really mean.

Twenty years ago, we watched first responders run into fire to save lives. We witnessed passengers on a plane sacrifice themselves in order to stop another attack. In the following weeks and months, we saw our sons and daughters sign up to serve our country, to protect our freedoms and to bring justice to those who attacked our homeland.

We find ourselves today, on the 20th anniversary, a nation in pain. From the coronavirus to devastating floods, to losing 13 brave service members in Afghanistan, to political divisiveness teetering on violence, many of us are struggling. We are collectively overwhelmed with grief. We are fighting to find a purpose in this pain.

And we can win this fight with love.

On this horrific day, 20 years ago, love and duty drove firefighters into the twin towers. Love of country drove our service members and veterans to enlist. Love was the last thing on the minds of those who perished.

Amidst this suffering, this pain -- we must love one another, give love to one another, and we must never forget. We cannot forget the first responders who spent painstaking months sifting through the rubble. We cannot forget our service members who gave their lives to protect our country and our way of life. We cannot forget those who perished in the attacks.

We must make a choice, every single day, to give love and support to those who need it most. We must channel the resilience and unity our nation found 20 years ago. May God bless the souls of the loved ones lost; may God bless their family, friends and neighbors; may God bless our brave service members, veterans, and first responders; and may God bless America.”

SUNY COBLESKILL VOLLEYBALL DROPS TWO CONTESTS AT MOUNT HOLYOKE COLLEGE TRIANGULAR MATCH

The SUNY Cobleskill women’s volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at a triangular match hosted by the Lyons of Mount Holyoke College on Saturday afternoon. The Fighting Tigers opened the event with a 3-1 loss Framingham State by set scores of 19-25, 19-25, 25-19 and 23-25 before losing a 3-0 decision to the host Lyons of Mount Holyoke by set scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-19. With the blank the Fighting Tigers fall to 0-7 overall on the year to date.

Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Larson, Winterset, Iowa, Winterset High School, turned in a stellar effort for the Orange & Black on the day going for 16 kills, 21 digs and a pair of service aces versus Framingham State then posting a 13 kill, 14 dig three service ace effort versus host Mount Holyoke. Sophomore libero/defensive specialist Victoria O’Bar, Middlebury, Conn, Nonnewaug High School, also turned in a strong effort for the visitors with 27 digs, two kills and an ace in the opener then going for 10 digs and two service aces in the finale.

Cobleskill will return to action on Tuesday September 14 when they host the Gators of Russell Sage College in non-conference action beginning at 7:00 p.m.

SUNY COBLESKILL MEN’S SOCCER FALLS TO NEW JERSEY CITY COLLEGE 3-1 AT BRYAN KARL TOURNAMENT

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team battled transportation difficulties, the team’s bus had a breakdown, on route to a 3-1 loss to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City University on Saturday afternoon in the opening round of the 2021 Bryan Karl Tournament hosted by Alfred University. With the defeat the Fighting Tigers drop to 0-2 overall on the season to date while the Gothic Knights improve to 5-0 on the year.

The lone Fighting Tiger goal came in the 60th minute of play when junior forward Tanner Reisman, Youngstown, N.Y., Lewiston-Porter High School, found the back of the net with assists credited to freshman defender Charles Agle, Eden, N.Y., Eden High School, and sophomore forward Cater Ciavardoni, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, which tied the contest at that time.

In the net, junior goalie John Gergen, Greenville, N.Y., Greenville High School, made 13 saves on the afternoon for Cobleskill.

The Fighting Tigers will close out the tournament on Sunday morning when they meet the host Saxons of Alfred University at 11:00 a.m.

Fighting Tigers Post Impressive Total at Warde Invitational

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s cross country team put on an impressive display of pack running on Saturday as the Fighting Tigers posted a team total of 16 points to out-pace a field of 12 teams at the 2021 Steven A. Warde Invitational hosted by the Fighting Tigers on their home course on Saturday afternoon. The team’s victory was their second invitational victory of the year to date.

The Fighting Tigers were once again led by first-year performer Eamonn Sullivan, Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Fordham Preparatory School, who bettered the 56-runner field by completing the 8000-meter loop in a course record time of 26:09.83. Sullivan was followed by his roommate sophomore Nick Logan, Queensbury, N.Y., Queensbury High School, who placed second overall in a time of 26:33.49 and by senior Dillon VanDemortel, Newark, N.Y., Newark High School, who placed third with a time of 26:44.64.

The team’s scoring was rounded out by first-year runner Shane Viscosi, Fultonville, N.Y., Fonda-Fultonville High School, in fourth place in a time of 27:17.37 and senior Jared Craw, Colonie, N.Y., Colonie High School/Hudson Valley Community College, who placed sixth with a time of 27:52.71. Junior Tucker Skowyra, Hardwick, Mass., Quabbin Regional High School, was also a factor in the meet for the Orange & Black finishing in 10th place in a time of 29:41.89.

Cobleskill will next be in action on Saturday September 18 when they travel to Marcy, N.Y. to compete in the 2021 Wildcat Invitational hosted by the SUNY Polytechnic Institute at their campus cross country course beginning at 10:00 a.m.

FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER SHUTOUT IN CONSOLATION GAME OF BRYAN KARL TOURNAMENT BY ALFRED UNIVERSITY 8-0

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team closed out their weekend excursion to Alfred University on Sunday falling to the host Pioneers in the consolation game of the 2021 Bryan Karl Tournament by an 8-0 margin. With the loss the Fighting Tigers drop to 0-3 on the year-to-date while the host Saxons move to 1-2-2 on the year.

Once again, the Fighting Tigers fell behind at the half trailing the home team 2-0 before the home standing Saxons used a home turf advantage to find the back of the net six times in the second half to post the victory as Cobleskill was outshot 35-8 in the contest.

The Orange & Black will return to action on Saturday September 18 when they open North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play with a home contest versus the Kangaroos of SUNY Canton with kick-off set for 2:30 p.m. followed by a Sunday home non-conference match versus the Privateers of SUNY Maritime beginning at 2:00 p.m.

SUNY COBLESKILL FIGHTING TIGER WEEKLY RECAP

The SUNY Cobleskill men’s cross country team ran to their second consecutive invitational championship on Saturday, winning their own Steven A. Warde Invitational with a team score of 16 points. Fighting Tiger first year runner Eamonn Sullivan, Wappingers Falls, N.Y., Fordham Preparatory School, also won his second consecutive invitational of the year to date covering the 8000-meter loop in a course record time of 26:09.83 to better the 56-runner field.

Fighting Tiger senior golfer Ethan Straub, Oswego, N.Y., Oswego High School/Jefferson Community College, posted his first career invitational victory on Saturday firing a round of three-over-par 75 to better a 22-player field at the 2021 Russell Sage Gator Fall Invitational hosted by Russell Sage College at the 7000-yard/par 72 Colonie Golf & Country Club in Voorheesville, N.Y. Led by Straub, Cobleskill posted a team total of 64-over par 352 to place third overall in the field of four teams.

Competing as an individual at the 2021 Russell Sage Gator Fall Invitational hosted by Russell Sage College at the 6310-yard/par 72 Colonie Golf & Country Club in Voorheesville, N.Y. on Saturday. Fighting Tiger junior Olivia Lisi, Marathon, N.Y., Marathon High School, captured the tournament’s individual title firing a round of 19-over-par 91 to record her first tournament victory of the season.

First year runner Jenna Swyers, Peru, N.Y., Peru High School, was the Fighting Tiger women’s cross country team’s top finisher at the 2021 Steven A. Warde Invitational hosted by Cobleskill on Saturday. Swyers completed the 6000-meter course in a time of 29:18.0 to place 10th overall in a field of 41 runners.

The Fighting Tiger men’s soccer team opened the 2021 season during the week by losing three contests to open the campaign at 0-3 overall On Wednesday Cobleskill fell at home by a 3-1 score to the visiting Brewers of Vassar College before traveling to Alfred, N.Y. over the weekend to for Alfred University’s Bryan Karl Tournament. The team dropped their tournament opener 3-1 to the Gothic Knights of New Jersey City on Saturday afternoon then losing to the host Saxons of Alfred University on Sunday morning by a 0-8 margin. Junior forward Tanner Reisman, Youngstown, N.Y., Lewston-Porter High School, scored both Orange & Black’s goals during the week.

The women’s volleyball lost three matches during the week losing at Castleton University to the Spartans 3-1 by set scores of: 25-23, 25-20, 17-25 and 25-20. Over the weekend the Fighting Tigers traveled to South Hadley, Mass to compete in a triangular match hosted by the Lyons of Mount Holyoke College. Cobleskill opened the even by losing to the Rams of Framingham State University 3-1 by set scores of 25-19,25-15, 19-25 and 25-23 followed by a 3-0 loss to the host Lyons by scores of 25-16, 25-18 and 25-19 to fall to 0-7 overall on the season. Sophomore outside hitter Mackenzie Larson, Winterset, Iowa, Winterset High School, averaged 4.5 kills and 4.4 digs per set over the week for Cobleskill in 10 sets played.

We're thrilled to present THE MOTHERHOOD PROJECT, created by Christy Escobar with collaborators Marinda Anderson, Rosa Gilmore, Keren Lugo, Kedren Spencer, and Sarah Todes, a reading of a new play in development that explores the decision to become or not become a Mother in these apocalyptic times.

We will also be presenting visual art in the upstairs gallery by Melike Baskoylu, a Turkish-born interdisciplinary sculptor and woodworker based in Brooklyn, NY. Their practice pursues a marriage between Eastern and Western influences in form-driven narratives and pattern-makings, bridging the divide between traditional and emerging technology. Inspired by Ottoman-Safavid Era miniature paintings and late 20-21st century sculptural movements of US/Europe, they reinterpret the visual and spacial relationships central to fine woodworking and painting.
