LOCAL NURSE CONVICTED OF LARCENY AND ORDERED TO COMPLETE DRUG COURT

DELHI - Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith announced that Katie Ryerson, 53, of Stamford, New York, was convicted of Petit Larceny in Delaware County Court on March 18, 2024, and ordered to enroll in and successfully complete the Delaware County Drug Court Program.   

The defendant, who was working as a nurse at the Delhi Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, pleaded guilty to Petit Larceny, a Class A Misdemeanor on January 2, 2024. Prior to pleading guilty, she admitted that she stole oxycodone pills from a resident of the nursing home facility for her own personal use on June 9, 2023.  

The defendant appeared in Delaware County Court on March 18, 2024, to conference her case. After receiving the pre-sentence investigation in this case, the Honorable John L. Hubbard ordered that the defendant be placed on interim probation supervision for at least one year.  A specific condition of interim probation supervision includes that the defendant enrolls in and successfully completes the Delaware County Adult Treatment Court Program. It is expected that the defendant’s nursing license will be suspended by the New York State Department of Education until she completes the Adult Treatment Program, at which time they will make a determination as to whether or not she can resume nursing.  

District Attorney Shawn Smith commended the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for their thorough investigation of this case which was referred to them by the Bureau of Narcotic Enforcement of the New York State Department of Health.  “I hope that this defendant takes advantage of the tremendous opportunity she was given and successfully overcomes her drug addiction. If the defendant fails to successfully complete the Adult Treatment Court Program, she will be sentenced to one year in jail.” 

As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in a court of law.

SUNY Delhi Students Participate in Model Senate at NYS Capitol

DELHI — Three SUNY Delhi students traveled to Albany and participated in the Model Senate Session at the New York State Capitol last weekend. SUNY Delhi was one of only six SUNY colleges invited to this prestigious weekend-long event this year.

Model Senate is an intensive training opportunity to learn more about the New York State government and the legislative process. Delhi students Khamil Almonte (senior), Dominick Dalton (senior), and Yasmeen Kablaoui (sophomore) each were assigned a Senator and their constituencies with access to the Senate Chamber where they were able to sit at the Senators' desks. The event culminated with students debating bills on the floor of the Senate. The topic for this year's session was Daniel's Law, which addresses police presence in cases of a mental health or substance use crisis.

During the weekend, the students also attended a luncheon with SUNY Chancellor John B. King, Jr., CUNY Chancellor Felix V. Matos Rodriguez, Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli, and other distinguished guests. To conclude the weekend, the students and their advisor Laura Pehrsson had the honor of attending the SOMOS Conference and Gala on Saturday evening.

Participation in the Model Senate experience reflects the commitment of the criminal justice program at SUNY Delhi to provide real-life learning and leadership development opportunities to prepare students for careers in law and the criminal justice system.

FORMER TOWN JUDGE CANDIDATE SENTENCED TO JAIL

DELHI - Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith announced that George Sydlar, 74, of Davenport New York was sentenced to 30 days in jail on March 19, 2024.  

A jury convicted George Sydlar of Falsely Reporting an Incident to 911, a Class A Misdemeanor, on January 19, 2024.  The defendant was alleged to have called 911 and reported that his neighbor committed a crime, despite knowing that his neighbor had not committed a crime. Proof at trial indicated that the defendant had engaged in this behavior on approximately two dozen occasions, after being told by the police that any dispute he had with his neighbor was civil and not criminal.  

After the defendant was convicted, the Court adjourned the proceedings until March 19th for sentencing.  During the two-month adjournment, a pre-sentence investigation was expected to be completed by the Delaware County Probation Department.  However, the defendant refused to cooperate with the Probation Department during that time, and instead declared that he was innocent of all charges.  

At the sentencing hearing on March 19th, the defendant showed no remorse and instead indicated he was not sorry for his criminal behavior. Assistant District Attorney Schuyler Kinneman argued that when a defendant refuses to accept responsibility for his actions, the only appropriate sentence is incarceration.  ADA Kinneman requested that the judge sentence the defendant to 6 months in jail.  The Honorable Yvonne Pagillo, Justice of the Kortright Town Court, sentenced the defendant to 30 days of incarceration.  The defendant was then taken into custody by the Delaware County Sheriff’s Deputies and transported to the Delaware County Correctional Facility to serve his sentence. 

District Attorney Smith commended ADA Kinneman for his work trying the case and thanked the Delaware County Sheriff’s Office for all of their work investigating the case.

DAVENPORT MAN CONVICTED OF BURGLARY

DELHI - Delaware County District Attorney Shawn J. Smith announced today that 48-year-old Justin T. Valk, of Davenport, New York, was convicted of Burglary in the Second Degree on Monday March 11, 2024, in Delaware County Court. 

The defendant’s case was scheduled for a jury trial beginning March 19, 2024.  On March 11, 2024, the defendant appeared for a pre-trial conference.  At the conclusion of the conference, the defendant pleaded guilty to Burglary in the Second Degree, a Class C felony, and the most serious charge in the indictment. 

Prior to pleading guilty, Valk admitted that between the 15th day of January 2022 and the 6th day of April 2022, he traveled to a seasonal home located at 226 County Route 30, Harpersfield, New York, with other co-defendants.  Valk stated that he stayed in the car while his co-defendants entered the home and committed larceny.  Although Valk did not go into the home, he admitted that he was aware of the reason that they went to the house and that he was involved and assisted with planning the burglary. Based upon those admissions, the Honorable Gary A. Rosa accepted the defendant’s guilty plea.  

This plea was entered pursuant to a negotiated disposition whereby it is agreed that the defendant will be sentenced to 6 years in state prison, to be followed by 3 years of post-release supervision. The defendant was remanded to the Delaware County Correctional Facility pending sentencing.  The defendant also faces a second indictment involving the death of his wife, and those charges are not included in this disposition.  

District Attorney Shawn Smith thanked the State Police for their work on this case. “I commend State Police Investigators Leslie Burton, Mathew Burkert (retired), Brian Mackey (retired), and Brian Dengler (retired) for the detailed investigation they conducted in this burglary investigation.  The significant state prison sentence will hold this defendant accountable for the roll he played in this burglary.”  

As are all persons accused of a crime, the defendant is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

Cherry Valley Easter Egg Hunt Set for March 30

CHERRY VALLEY - Back for its fourth year, the Cherry Valley Easter Egg Hunt will be held the day before Easter, on Saturday, March 30th, from noon - 2pm.

Duanesburg Named Ross New Super

Cobleskill CS Grad and Former C-R, M'burgh Teacher

DUANESBURG - The Duanesburg Central School District school board named Kimberly Ross as the district's new superintendent during a special meeting last week following a five-month search.

Ms. Ross, of Sloansville, currently in the same position at Green Island Union Free School District, will assume duties on July 1, as she replaces Dr. James Niedermeier who retired in September 2023.

Ms. Ross has served in her current position since 2019. Prior to that, she was the director of student support services for the Gloversville Enlarged School District. She also worked as an elementary school principal in both Gloversville and Middleburgh, as well as a social studies teacher in Cobleskill-Richmondville.

During Ross’ tenure as superintendent, the graduation rate for GIUFSD increased from 75% to 93%, according to a press release from Duanesburg schools.

Ms. Ross is a New York certified administrator with a certification in school district administration from the University at Albany and SUNY Plattsburgh. She holds a bachelor’s in adolescent education from SUNY Oneonta and a master’s in education theory and practice/history from the UAlbany.

Esperance Egg Hunt Set for March 24

ESPERANCE - The Village of Esperance Monday met for its monthly meeting with Mayor Royce Gage and Board of Trustees.

In a busy meeting, board members:

·       Heard that the Esperance Volunteer Fire Department announced its upcoming events with their ongoing Fish Fry Fridays, March 15 and March 22 from 5 pm to 7 pm.  Dinners are $15.00 each.  

·       Heard that on March 24 at 1:30 pm there will be an Easter Egg Hunt in the Village Park for children up to 10 years old.

·       Agreed to seek volunteers to help on its Beautification, Planning and Zoning Boards.

·       Named Venus Louise as Village Registrar as of February 2, 2024.

·       Set the public hearing for the annual budget on March 25.

·       Heard that Al Theiser was fined $1,500 for failing to secure a demolition permit within Village limits. .

·       Heard that the first round of Village sidewalk repairs is slated to begin within two weeks, starting at the Esperance Health and Wellness office, down Main Street to Church Street.

Schoharie County Launches Comprehensive Housing Conditions Assessment

Schoharie – The Schoharie County Housing Committee is pleased to announce the initiation of a targeted building condition assessment, marking a significant milestone in the larger Schoharie County Housing Study. The study's objective is to furnish a comprehensive overview of the current housing inventory, anticipate population growth and subsequent housing demand, discern market trends, identify unmet needs, and formulate a strategic approach to address these challenges.

Scheduled to commence in the second week of March, the housing conditions survey will extend throughout the remainder of the month, with a focus on the following representative communities crucial for understanding Schoharie County's housing landscape:

Town of Blenheim

Village of Sharon Springs

Village of Middleburgh

Town of Conesville

Village of Schoharie

Surveyors will be conducting assessments directly from the roadway, utilizing slow-moving vehicles clearly marked as "Flatley Read." This approach ensures a higher number of homes undergo assessment for housing conditions, facilitating a more comprehensive data collection process.

Sharon Springs Central School Update

SHARON SPRINGS — Students at SSCS are heading towards the four quarter and spring break, but before that, they are presenting several events. On March 7th, the science club held their annual science fair, now called the Makers Faire. Students K-12 made original displays to express their hobbies and the particular subject of interest. 

Students of the drama club will be holding their school musicals on Friday, March 22nd, and Saturday, March 23rd at 7 pm. Grab your tickets today! Selected FFA members will be attending Sub-States in Windsor this Saturday, Good luck to all FFA participants! 

Don’t forget to Sign-up for AYSO soccer beginning March 11th till Sunday, March 24th. 

The SSCS PTO is doing a Stanley Cup Raffle to support teacher appreciation week! $3 per raffle ticket Venmo @SSCSPTO for a chance to win. The winner will be chosen on March 18th they will receive a 40 oz Stanely Cup and a $25 Dunkin Donuts gift card.

“Sharon Things - Local Happenings for Sharon Springs”

Hey Neighbors!

A little of this and a little of that! The weather gave us a dose of spring, winter, then spring again! With nearly 3 inches of snow in places this last week, Sharon Springs got more precipitation than some surrounding areas. The transition from inches of snow to the 60s happened quickly. There was flooding due to the rapid rain before and then the rapid melt off. 

Enjoy the sun while we have it since there is overcast weather in the forecast coming over the weekend. Don't put the jackets away yet since there could be snow next week on Friday. Temperatures head back down to 30s early next week.

The schedule of events for the Klinkhart spring and summer events will come out soon so keep and eye out for all the fun to come!

Mark your calendars for the big Easter Egg Hunt at SSCS sponsored by KNK Landscaping scheduled for Saturday, April 20th at 12 PM.

Brimstone Bakery is offering monthly afternoon tea starting in April! Monthly Afternoon Tea Service is on the second Wednesday of each month starting in April, from 2 PM to 4 PM. Sharon Springs Rescue Squad 

The Sharon Springs Rescue Squad is a cornerstone of the community! With many active members, they are always looking for new volunteers for Drivers, First Responders, Social Members, and EMT’s. SSRS will fund any training that is needed. SSRS meets the first Monday of the month at 7 PM and would be happy to answer any questions on how to support your community.

Intergenerational Experience a Hit

The Silver & Gold luncheon at “Spa Ritz” for March included a craft and bingo as an intergenerational activity with students from SSCS last Friday.

SHARON SPRINGS — “When senior hearts are happy, all the world seems bright and gay. And when youngsters’ eyes are smiling, sure, they steal your heart away.”

There were definitely smiles all around during the special intergenerational St. Patrick’s Day Luncheon for the Silver & Gold Club in Sharon Springs at the “Spa Ritz”, this past Friday, March 8th at noon.

Sharon Springs Central School Kindergarten and Second-Grade Students lifted the spirits of thirty members of the Sharon Silver & Gold Senior Club at their March 10th monthly luncheon meeting. Students sang a few songs and shared smiling paper clovers and chocolate candies with the seniors at the Office for the Aging’s “Spa Ritz” congregate meal site at the Sharon Springs Firehouse. For the bingo activity, students paired up with seniors as John Walker, Kindergarten Teacher, served as bingo caller. The kids and older adults enjoyed each other’s company for the afternoon.

SHARON SPRINGS — As the shops & restaurants of historic Sharon Springs celebrate the arrival of the spring season and their reopening, they invite you to a Spring Awakening March 30, 10-5 pm, where each shop will offer their interpretation of the season.

Have fun visiting the shops to hunt eggs filled with unique prizes inside, sample edible flower shortbreads, craft paper flowers, see what spring holds for you with Tarot Card readings, blend your own spring fragrance, create a bouquet or vase with a Dried Flower Bloom Bar, enjoy spring shopping for decor, gifts and more. But, before you come, make sure to plan brunch @ Brimstone Bakery (reservations recommended) to savor their seasonal delights. Joining us for Spring Awakening is Hulse Hill Farm‘s Christine who will help you feel your own Cashmere Posey pin with Cashmere combed from her own loving cashmere goats. Christine will also have available new spring shades of her clean Cashmere yarn and fibers for purchase. Spirit Trading Company’s Farm will have their truck full of Fresh Spring Flowers just in time for your Easter weekend and it wouldn’t be spring without a Beekman Baby Goat tour (tickets required).
