Native American Rapper Visits Delaware Academy

DELHI – Elementary and middle school students at Delaware Academy Central School District at Delhi enjoyed a visit from Supaman Tuesday morning– and that’s not a typo. Supaman (Christian Takes Gun Parrish) is a Native American hip-hop artist and dancer from the Apsáalooke Nation in Montana. He was at the school on Tuesday with DJ Element (Logan Howard) to share his unique blend of music, dance and storytelling. In a highly interactive presentation that combined traditional music and “fancy” dance as well as contemporary hip-hop, Supaman shared messages of resilience, pride, and inclusion in an upbeat and engaging way with the young audience. Dressed from head to toe in traditional Native American regalia, Supaman captivated the students with his music, dance, catch phrases, and one (just one) joke.

Bringing both students and teachers onstage, Supaman created a spontaneous rap with a positive message, with the audience volunteers laying down to component tracks. With DJ Element providing the sound, the school’s middle and elementary school teachers were given the stage to showcase their best dance moves, to the roaring approval of the audience.

With honors including an MTV VMA, Native American Music Award, Indigenous Music Awards, and more, Supaman’s viral videos have reached millions and taken him to stages across the U.S. and beyond. DJ Element is a respected and well-traveled hip-hop DJ, with roots in Arizona’s Salt River Indian Reservation (Pima). Together, they’ve been sharing their music and message in communities around the country. This week’s appearance at Delaware Academy was facilitated by the Roxbury Arts Group.

Delhi Celebrates Annual Harvest Fest

By Angelica Toumbas

DELHI- On September 27th between 10-4pm, visitors and residents of Delhi enjoyed their annual Harvest Fest. Harvest Fest is a festival that celebrates the community, by showcasing all the hard work that locals put in during the summer. It’s a festival that welcomes the new season and brings joy to anyone that participates. This event has been loved by many for decades, and one that locals and visitors always look forward to every year.

This festival is one that provides an excellent shopping experience, with vendors lined up and down Main St. Even residents living along the main strip participated by doing small garage sale type pop-ups.

The day was perfect at around 70 degrees and sunny, and the weather depicted a beautiful fall day with a crisp cool breeze. It was as if the weather also happily participated in this festivity. When visitors enter the main area around the courthouse, they are greeted by endless tents showcasing a wide variety of goods. There were over 50 vendors along with farmers selling their locally grown/ handmade products. The range of goods seemed endless. Goods varied from jewelry, baked goods, handmade signs, blown glass vases, candles, clothing, and much more.

This event had much to offer and can be enjoyed by people of any age. With food trucks, live music, farmers selling fresh produce, and much more, this event has all the bases covered.

At the historical bandstand, Bobby Curious played music with his guitar between 11:30-2:30pm, setting a laid-back welcoming vibe. Visitors were able to sit on benches, around tables, and even on the grass to enjoy the music while being able to also have a bite to eat. Due to there being so much variety, there’s never a shortage of great food/ desert options at this event.

At this year’s Harvest Festival there were easily over 100 visitors. Many families came to this event together, and many people found familiar/friendly faces while walking through and around the area.    With children running around with bags of popcorn, dogs happily wagging their tails, and the sounds of friendly chatter, this experience embodies all things community.

Families, friends, or anyone looking for a great afternoon filled with fun should check out this event! For those looking to participate in being a vendor in the future, registration must be done ahead of time. Information about this event/ future Harvest Fest dates can be found online or on the Harvest Fest Facebook page.
