Since 2013, the International Middle Child has made it their mission to raise awareness of Middle Child’s Day. (Middle Child’s Day? There’s a Middle Child’s Day? Yes, there is. And it’s August 12th.) Apparently, they need to do more. So for 2017, the I.M.C.U. has created the Middle Child’s Day “Middle” Town Outreach program. “I’ve compiled a list of every town I could find with Middle in its name, and I’m reaching out to them for help,” says union boss, Bruce Hopman. “As our Middle Child-in-Chief would say, the goal is to make Middle Child’s Day great again.”
Hopman is asking “Middle” towns to issue a proclamation or formal announcement on August 12th in support of Middle Child’s Day. “If a “Middle” town can’t throw a little attention a Middle Child’s way, then we have no hope,” he says. Interview with Hub New Music

This week we interview Michael Avitabile, a previously unknown relative of me (not my brother by the same name)! I didn’t realize it until we covered the Roxbury concert his group Hub New Music plays today Thursday, August 10th. He was kind enough to give us his time for this interview.
What are some of your biggest musical influences?
Discalimer: I listen to a lot of music and this list is definitely always growing and changing from day to day. In general, I think it's important for a musician to have a broad range of musical taste that spans outside his/her own genre. I can't exactly pinpoint how each artist has specifically influenced me or my group per say, but listening to music I like is an inspiring journey in itself. That said, I think it's important to go hear as many live concerts as possible - nothing can replace that visceral energy and feeling of community that comes from an exhilarating concert. Here are a few of my favorites.

How does it feel to play in the Catskills?
I've never actually spent anytime in the Catskills, so I'm very excited to be coming out for a concert. We're all in Boston, so it's always fun to get out of the city and go somewhere pretty - especially during the summer. With any city that Hub travels to, I'm always excited about the constant exchange of new things and ideas. For much of the music we play, the audiences haven't heard the pieces or may not even know the composers. It's always a treat to hear how audiences react to something they've never experienced before. On our end, a new city always means experiencing a new culture. Whether its a restaurant we go to, historic site we visit, or concert venue we play, it's always fun to be introduced to a new community even if it's only for a day or two.
Do you feel you play one genre or role or have a mix thereof?
Hub is definitely a classical music ensemble and we're all trained in that art. However, what's interesting about playing newer repertoire (all of the pieces we tour are written after 2000), is the diversity of influence in new music. We have composers who merge classical counterpoint with groove driven rhythms in pop music, or composers who use electronics, or test the limits of each individual instrument etc, and it's amazing how much that has opened my mind beyond what I was taught in school.
What is your favorite part of being involved with music?
So I have a bit of a round-about answer for this one. Outside of music, I'm a big food nerd and I absolutely adore that Netflix documentary series Chef's Table. One chef who I particularly admire is Dominque Crenn whose menus are these lyric poems that use food to tell a story. That whole concept was fascinating to me, and she always reiterated that coming into her restaurant was like coming into her home. There was something so powerful, warm, and deeply human about that, which immediately drew a comparison to music. As artists, regardless of the medium, I think its our job to connect with people and to make them feel something that transcends everyday life. In a way, a concert space is like a restaurant and the program is like a menu. The venue is essentially my home where I have opportunity to tell a story, to connect, and to take someone on a journey. That feeling of community building and of making people's lives better for a few hours is what makes me happiest about being a musician.

Fight Leads to Hypodermic Needle Arrest in Hobart
On August 5th , 2017 Delaware County Sheriff Deputies responded to a
911 call of a fight in progress on Main Street in the Village of Hobart.
Upon conclusion of the investigation, deputies arrested 23 year old
Michael Stein of Delhi, for Criminally Possessing a Hypodermic
Instrument and Unlawful Possession of Marihuana. Stein was
arraigned in the Town of Stamford Court where he was remanded to
the Delaware County Correctional Facility on $2,500 cash or $5,000
secured bond.

On Sunday 8/6/17 Schoharie County Sheriff's Deputies arrested Mary A. Perez age 33, Palatine Bridge NY for DWI at 12 N on Ste Rte 443 in the Town of Schoharie. County 911 Dispatchers received a report of the vehicle being operated erratically prior to the arrest. Subject is to appear in Schoharie Town Court on September 4, 2017

With the farm stands full of great produce, and the fields and forests ripe for foraging, the monthly Supper Club will celebrate the abundance of the season on Saturday, August 12. Supper Club, a five course tasting dinner at Heather Ridge Farm, starts at 7pm, and advance reservations are necessary. Reservations must be secured with a credit card, and cost $75 per person.
The dinners have been held once or twice a month all year. From June through September Supper Club dinners are held outdoors on the farm, weather permitting. In the cooler months, dinner is in the solar-powered 1820s farmhouse. Chef Rob Handel creates imaginative menus with the meat and poultry raised at Heather Ridge Farm, combined with items Rob had foraged, as well as produce and dairy products from other regional farms.
On Sunday, August 13, the Second Sunday Session will be held 12-2 hosted by fiddlers Hilary Schrauf and Bernie Neumann. The Second Sunday Session is an opportunity for traditional Irish, Old Time, Cape Breton, and Scottish musicians to get together and share a few tunes in a cozy atmosphere. Come out and join in a few tunes, or sit back and enjoy the music and good food!
The month ends with a Fried Chicken Picnic on Saturday August 26, starting at 6pm. The fried chicken is a culmination of a three day long process that starts with a koji marinade and wraps up with a dusting in chef Rob Handel’s secret blend of spices and gluten free flours. All are welcome but reservations are still appreciated. The picnic is served buffet style, with chicken being fried fresh continually until 8pm, accompanied by sides crafted from locally grown items.

The Bees Knees Café and farm store at Heather Ridge Farm is located at 989 Broome Center Road, Preston Hollow, NY. 518-239-6234. The farm raises Animal Welfare Approved Certified Grassfed lamb and goat, pastured pork and eggs, as well as all grassfed beef and pastured poultry. The Café is open Thursday through Sunday in July and August for lunch and brunch from 11am-3pm, and weekends year-round. With the farm stands full of great produce, and the fields and forests ripe for foraging, the monthly Supper Club will celebrate the abundance of the season on Saturday, August 12. Supper Club, a five course tasting dinner at Heather Ridge Farm, starts at 7pm, and advance reservations are necessary. Reservations must be secured with a credit card, and cost $75 per person.
The dinners have been held once or twice a month all year. From June through September Supper Club dinners are held outdoors on the farm, weather permitting. In the cooler months, dinner is in the solar-powered 1820s farmhouse. Chef Rob Handel creates imaginative menus with the meat and poultry raised at Heather Ridge Farm, combined with items Rob had foraged, as well as produce and dairy products from other regional farms.
On Sunday, August 13, the Second Sunday Session will be held 12-2 hosted by fiddlers Hilary Schrauf and Bernie Neumann. The Second Sunday Session is an opportunity for traditional Irish, Old Time, Cape Breton, and Scottish musicians to get together and share a few tunes in a cozy atmosphere. Come out and join in a few tunes, or sit back and enjoy the music and good food!
The month ends with a Fried Chicken Picnic on Saturday August 26, starting at 6pm. The fried chicken is a culmination of a three day long process that starts with a koji marinade and wraps up with a dusting in chef Rob Handel’s secret blend of spices and gluten free flours. All are welcome but reservations are still appreciated. The picnic is served buffet style, with chicken being fried fresh continually until 8pm, accompanied by sides crafted from locally grown items.

Fatal Motorcycle Accident in Walton

At approximately 5:00 p.m. on Sunday afternoon, July 30, 2017, Delaware
County Sheriff Deputies and members of the Walton Fire Department and
Emergency Squad responded to a 911 report of a serious personal injury
motor cycle accident on State Highway 206 in the Town of Walton.
Preliminary investigation by Sheriff’s Deputies, Investigators and members
of the New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit revealed that 45
year old James R. VerNooy of Walton was driving a farm tractor in a
northerly direction on State Highway 206 and had begun to make a left turn
when a northbound motorcycle operated by 70 year old James G. Cushman
of Norwich struck the tractor’s front end loader bucket while attempting to
overtake and pass the farm tractor in a no passing zone in the southbound
lane.
Cushman and his passenger, 67 year old Nancy A. Cushman, were
subsequently thrown from the motorcycle as a result of the collision. Nancy
Cushman was fatally injured and died at the scene. James Cushman
sustained serious physical injuries and was transported to Delaware Valley
Hospital in Walton and was airlifted to UHS Wilson Medical Center in
Johnson City for treatment.
The investigation by members of the Delaware County Sheriff's Office and
New York State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit remains on-going.
Deputies and Investigators are attempting to identify and interview a female
witness that was driving a full size, white Sport Utility Vehicle, and are
asking anyone that may have witnessed or that has information concerning
this accident to immediately contact the Delaware County Sheriff's Office at
(607) 832-5555.

Broome Man Arrested for Endangering Welfare of Child

The Schoharie County Sheriff's Department announced the following earlier today:
Following the investigation of an incident, Schoharie County Sheriff Deputies on 7/24/17 arrested Richard J. Christian, age 42, of Hauverville Road in the Town of Broome for Endangering the Welfare of a Child. Deputies were contacted when the subject removed the cast from the wrist a 10 years old male subject with a butter knife. The 10 year old had previously suffered a fractured wrist.
Christian was arraigned in Richmondville Town Court and committed to the custody of the Sheriff's Office in lieu of $500. bail.
He is to reappear in town court on a later date.
It is unknown why Christian removed the cast from the child's wrist and the incident was reported by the victim's father.
