WINDHAM, N.Y. – The Adaptive Sports Foundation (ASF) is set to host its two multi-sport summer camps next week, August 16-19, and the following week, August 23-26.
The ASF’s Multi-Sport Summer Camps provide its campers with fun exercise opportunities in the outdoors at lakes and campsites located in the Windham area. Each four-day camp session has the same schedule of events (weather permitting), and each day runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and lunch will take place at 11:30 a.m.
The first day of both camps will be an opportunity to enjoy the great outdoors. The campers will spend their day at CD Lane Park in Maplecrest to enjoy a nature walk and to ride bikes around the park and behind the lake where eagles live and are often seen. The park also features a beach, a volleyball court and disc golf, which are all available at the ASF’s disposal.
After a day of enjoying some nature, day two’s focus will be on team sports. The participants will once again spend the day at CD Lane Park to utilize the soccer field in the morning and learn some basics on how to play “the beautiful game”. The afternoon will be spent on the baseball diamond, where campers will play either softball or kickball. The park’s basketball courts will also be available for any camper who is looking to shoot some hoops.
The third day of the four-day session will take place in nearby Jewett at Colgate Lake. The ASF will take its campers kayaking at the popular water feature in the morning before breaking for lunch. The afternoon will feature swimming, a nature walk and other lakeside activities before the campers depart for the day.
The campers will meet at the ASF’s Gwen Allard Adaptive Sports Center on the final day of each camp. From there, the ASF shuttle bus will take them to nearby Prattsville to visit Heidi Ruehlmann’s Alpaca Farm. Frank Cabrera, a volunteer regularly seen at the ASF’s Adaptive Skateboard Camp, takes care of a herd of Alpacas owned by Ruehlmann and the two of them allow ASF campers to spend a morning feeding and interacting with the tranquil animals. The campers will then return to the ASF lodge for a barbecue lunch before departing.
“I’m super excited for our multi-sport summer camps,” program manager Tony Vasile said. “We have a lot of fun activities planned for the campers, from riding bikes and kayaking to looking for eagles’ nests and petting alpacas. The next two weeks will be a lot of fun.”
