BOCES Event will Link Students to Employers and Recruiters

SCHOHARIE – Dozens of businesses, labor unions and organizations will seek to solve their workforce shortages by recruiting high school students from the Career & Technical Education Center – Schoharie Campus during a June 6 event at SUNY Cobleskill.

Hosted by Capital Region BOCES, the June 6 career fair helps students find jobs and opens their eyes to the variety of careers their Career and Technical School education is preparing them for.

The event will run from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at SUNY Cobleskill’s Bouck Hall Ballroom, which is located at 104 Suffolk Circle, Cobleskill, N.Y. 12043

Brian Sano, Regional Director of National Grid, said BOCES is a critical partner to solving its workforce needs.

“The partnership between National Grid and BOCES is incredibly important,” Sano said while visiting one of the three state-of-the-art Electrical Trades program laboratories BOCES operates. “We are developing green-collar jobs—even in our gas division, we are looking at a non-carbon gas system—and we need programs like this to ensure we have the workforce necessary to accomplish those goals,” he said.

If you are hiring and are interested in attending the Job fair, contact Nancy Liddle at Nancy.liddle@neric.org  at 518-320-6483 . Thank you.

An update from NYS Canal Corp/NYPA the topic of presentation for the May meeting of the Friends of Schoharie Crossing

Fort Hunter  -  The Friends of Schoharie Crossing will host officials from the New York State Canal Corporation and New York Power Authority to discuss the restoration of Guy Park Manor in Amsterdam on Tuesday, May 28th at 6:30pm inside the Enders House on Schoharie Street in Fort Hunter.

Join us for this presentation by Robert F. Panepinto and Lauren Hoopes.  They will be providing an update about the Guy Park Manor Environmental Education and Resiliency project.  That project will restore the historic manor along the Erie Canal and Mohawk River in the City of Amsterdam, Montgomery County, and create a new educational facility and community gathering space. Guy Park Manor, a structure listed in the National Register of Historic Places, is located along the Erie Canal and Mohawk River at Lock E-11. Severely damaged by flooding during Hurricane Irene and Tropical Storm Lee in 2011, the preservation, rehabilitation, and reactivation of this site will be completed in two main phases.

Robert F. Panepinto has served as a Cultural Resources Specialist for the New York Power Authority (NYPA) for the past 16 years, the last four of which have been spent in a senior role. Prior to his employment with NYPA, he worked for the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and as a consultant on independent projects. He holds an MA in American History from Villanova University and an MS in Historic Preservation from the University of Vermont.

Lauren Hoopes has served as a Cultural Resources Specialist at the New York State Canal Corporation for the past 5 years. She holds a BA in History from University of Pittsburgh and an MS in Historic Preservation from Clemson University and the College of Charleston’s joint program. Working on the New York State Canal System, some of which is more than 200 years old, keeps Lauren on her toes day-in and day-out.

This program is free and open to the public. Donations to the Friends of Schoharie Crossing are always graciously accepted. The Enders House is located adjacent to the Visitor Center and Museum.

Schoharie Crossing State Historic Site Visitor Center and Museum is located at 129 Schoharie Street, Fort Hunter, NY 12069; their telephone number is (518) 829-7516.  The grounds of the site are open from sunrise to sunset every day of the year.

M'burgh Village Rejects Bid for Work at M&S Depot

By David Avitabile

MIDDLEBURGH - The Village of Middleburgh earlier this month rejected the lone bid for upgrades for the historic M&S Depot.

The village, in conjunction with the Middleburgh Historical Society, is looking to build a bathroom, storage closet area, and other improvements at the M&S Depot, located at the corner of Wells and Maple avenues.

In May, the village got a bid from Schoenecker Construction for $69,848 to do the work at the Depot, but officials at their May meeting said the bid was incomplete. Items such as heating, electricity, plumbing, air conditioning were added, the bid would be too high. Trustee Bob Tinker and Mayor Tim Knight said a new plan is needed.

"We need to make a different plan," Trustee Tinker said. The plans may have to be lessened in order to pay for the project, he added.

"We hope to get a new plan this year and go out to bid," Mayor Knight said.

After reviewing the bid at their meeting in April, board members delayed taking any action as members of the Historical Society want to review and discuss it before the village takes any action.

The cost of the work will be paid for through funds provided for by local benefactor Nick Juried, who also paid for past upgrades.

Trustee Tinker, who has overseen the rebirth of the depot since work started about a dozen years ago, said the upcoming changes at the Depot should include period lighting around the property and a new bathroom and storage area which will be a separate building on the Grove Street end of the building adjoining the present deck. Additional work should include the two new parking areas and assorted concrete work for sidewalks, etc.

The Middleburgh Historical Society is responsible for financing these projects. It is hoped that most of this work will be done this spring and summer.

Village board members in April did approve a bid from Schoenecker Construction for replace three sidewalks in the village for $60,900. The village received three bids for that work.

M&S Depot to Host M'burgh Heritage Day Concert

Village to Resurface Three Roads

By David Avitabile

MIDDLEBURGH - The annual Heritage Day concert in Middleburgh will be held at the M&S Depot on Friday, August 23.

The concert will begin at 7pm. The depot is located at the corner of Wells and Maple avenues in the village. In past years, the concert was held at Timothy Murphy Park on the other side of the creek from the village.

Trustee Bob Tinker,  who has overseen the rebirth of the depot since work started about a dozen years ago, said it would be a great place for a concert and that the depot would be open that evening.

In other news, trustees earlier the month approved a quote from the Gorman Group for $51,9090 to resurface Gorge Road, Griebel Lane, and Pleasant Avenue. It will cost $30,628 to resurface Gorge Road, $13,157 to resurface Griebel Lane, and $8,124 to do the work on Pleasant Avenue. The funds will come from the village's CHIPs funds for the year.

Other road work approved were: $130 for Carver Construction for trucking, $2,060 for stone from Carver Construction, and $14,760 for milling by Carver, for a total of $16,950. Those funds will also come from the village's CHIPs funds for 2024.

New Displays at Gilboa Museum

GILBOA — This Saturday and Sunday, Gilboa Museum opens its 2024 season from noon to 4—with new displays in nearly all of the areas.

. . . .In the Nicholas J. Juried History Center under the stained-glass eagle on the west wall is a display on New York City’s early 20th century need for water. It is told by Fox News’ film crews as Fox had produced five movies in this community and was familiar with the reservoir drama unfolding here. This display features several minutes of Fox News film taken in the early 1920s and gives us insights into village life and activities in the Riverside quarry.

. . . .Another exhibit is the cashbox from the Broome Center General Store, with examples of large bills used until 1929, locally printed small bills used since that time, and historical coins. Musical artifacts on display include Nipper’s (“His Master’s Voice”) autobiography along with the ca. 1880 Regina music box and the 1913 Victrola.

. . . .In the Natural Science room, all exhibits have been revised to emphasize patron understanding. One collection show variations in Devonian sea beds, while a set of pictures show techniques used in mapping the Devonian environments. A detailed illustration underlying the Conesville exploration is shown, and there is a display locating the placement of fossils on tree anatomy. Coverage of Cairo’s quarry exploration has been updated.

. . . .A new section on the Ages of the Fishes is in development so you can see both the fishes and how displays are developed over the coming weeks. Follow our new driveway for a memorable holiday event, noon to 4, Saturday and Sunday, and visit our neighbors at The Cidery.
