Landis Book Room Open This Saturday, July 10

Written By Editor on 7/9/21 | 7/9/21

If you've taken the time to browse our Book Room in the Barn at one of our Plant, Book, and Bake Sales, you know that surprising treasures await.
It doesn't look like much from the outside, but the inside is stuffed with a trove of great reads - everything from books on gardening and nature topics to novels and biographies. We're lucky that our community thinks of us when it's time to thin their bookshelves, and that they are discerning readers who take good care of their books. The result is a wonderful selection.

We've often been asked about opening the Book Room when we are not having a plant sale, so we've gathered some of our intrepid volunteers who will open the door on second Saturdays from June through September (and possibly October, depending on weather). We'll be open from 10:00 AM to 2:00 PM on July 10, August 14, September 11, and possibly October 9. Sales are by donation, with cash or checks accepted.

We hope to see you there, finding that next great book (or books ...)

HCOC Hunger Coalition of Otsego County NY

The Hunger Coalition is proud to announce a $ 10,000 Grant given to CADE to assist in  providing nutritious fresh local sourced produce to Food Pantries in the Hunger Coalition of  Otsego Network. These funds come from various generous donations given to the HCOC.

CADE Farm to Pantry: For several years CADE has been working on advancing  partnerships between Farms and Institutions to spur local food sales. As a response to COVID-19  and abundant food insecurity that was highlighted throughout the pandemic, CADE launched in  2020 a Farm to Pantry (F2P) Program with generous funding and community partnership in  Otsego County. The program allows pantries to "sign on" to CADE's program where they could  then order from a multi-farm aggregator, 607 CSA, to purchase local products for their  pantry. CADE facilitates the ordering, handles invoicing and coordinates delivery so that local  food ordered by pantries can be purchased with ease. The products ordered from pantries are  paid for by community funding, to support a win-win of local fresh food to pantries and a stable  market for struggling farm and food businesses. This program and local food is of no cost to  pantries, with the hope that relationships with farms would continue beyond the scope of the  project. Launching mid-June in 2021, thanks to funding support from the Hunger Coalition of  Otsego County, CADE will continue this important work of fresh food security and supporting  small farms and food businesses.

HCOC: Our group was created to help feeding programs unite. Our Network shares  information and resources throughout Otsego County.

We are a diverse group of people representing food pantries, feeding programs, farmer's markets, religious, educational and non- profit agencies and individuals. COVID has expanded our  purpose to include other projects to assist pantries in providing for their needs. CADE: The Center for Agricultural Development and Entrepreneurship is a 501(c)3  nonprofit who works with farms and food businesses in upstate New York to build a  vibrant food system, in which locally owned agricultural businesses thrive and  consumers are nourished by healthy sustainably produced food.

Cooperstown Summer Music Festival Returns with Five August and September Concerts

Written By Editor on 7/5/21 | 7/5/21

The Cooperstown Summer Music Festival returns for its 23rd season with five concerts in August and September, bringing live chamber music back to the Cooperstown area after a pandemic hiatus during the summer of 2020.
Attending a concert will carry new meaning this summer, after a year of social isolation prevented artists from connecting with audiences in the concert hall. Music lovers of all stripes should take note of CSMF’s exciting concert lineup, which promises to be one of the best ways to celebrate the return of the performing arts to the stage.
The Festival will open in joyous fashion with the CSMF Musical Kaleidoscope, a free outdoor performance at the Fenimore Art Museum Lawn on Tuesday, August 10 at 7pm (rain date: August 17). The Caroga Arts Ensemble, led by cellist Kyle Price, will perform a dynamic program ranging from bluegrass and classical to jazz and pop in a performance that is intended as a gift to the Cooperstown community. The performance, sponsored by NBT Bank, is free but ticket reservations are required.
“CSMF is thrilled to be partnering with the Caroga Arts Ensemble for our return to the stage,” says Festival Founder and Artistic Director Linda Chesis. “We wanted our first concert to be a gift to the community so that everyone can experience the joy of live music after such a difficult year.”
On Sunday, August 15 at 7pm, the much-acclaimed Imani Winds will perform a program of music for wind quintet at the Otesaga Resort Hotel. The GRAMMY-nominated ensemble is famous for their innovative programming and dynamic performances, and Cooperstown audiences can expect a concert filled with their signature fresh energy and technical expertise.
The Verona Quartet returns to the Festival on Sunday, August 22 at 4pm at the Farmers’ Museum. This multi-award-winning quartet, veterans of the Festival and a CSMF audience favorite, will perform a program of works by Shostakovich and Dvorak’s beloved “American” Quartet.
The festival then takes a detour to South America with a performance by the Brazilian jazz supergroup Trio da Paz, whom NPR describes as the “cream of expatriate Brazilian musicians in the US”, on Monday, August 30 at 7pm at the Otesaga Resort Hotel.
Lastly, the festival will conclude with a duo performance by the violinist Danbi Um and guitarist Jiji on Sunday, September 19 at 4pm at the Otesaga Resort Hotel. These young virtuosos will join forces for a genre-spanning program including works by Corelli, Paganini, Piazzolla and Ella Fitzgerald.
For all events, venues will be at limited capacity and masking and social distancing protocols will be in place.
Chesis says that this season’s artists are all so eager to be returning to the stage and are looking forward to bringing their craft to Cooperstown. “After such a long period of isolation, we can’t wait to safely bring the community together to once again connect through music.”

A Return to Live Theatre at Fenimore Art Museum’s Lakeside Amphitheater

Live performances:

"The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)"

Wednesdays, Thursdays, and select Fridays in July and August at 7:00 pm (July 14-August 18)

Tickets available on Eventbrite at https://shakespeareabridged.eventbrite.com

Cooperstown, New York – Fenimore Art Museum’s Glimmer Globe Theatre is thrilled to announce a return to live theatre this summer with "The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)" by Adam Long, Daniel Singer, and Jess Winfield. This relentless farce combines all 37 of the bards plays (and sonnets!) into 100 minutes. Three madcap actors in tights weave their wicked way through every comedy, history, and tragedy in one wild ride that will leave you breathless with laughter. An irreverent, fast-paced romp through the Bard's career, “The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged)” was London's longest-running comedy. Our new production will star Michael Henrici, Danielle Henrici, and Jason Francey and is set against the backdrop of beautiful Otsego Lake at the Museum’s Lucy B. Hamilton Amphitheater. Performances take place on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and select Fridays in July and August at 7:00 pm (July 14-August 18).

This is a production that appeals to everyone - lovers and “not-lovers” of Shakespeare alike. It’s also an incredible way to introduce children and teens to the Bard.

Advance tickets are available through Eventbrite.com at https://shakespeareabridged.eventbrite.com. Tickets: $15 Adults (13-64; $13.50 Seniors (65+) and Members; $10 Youth (7-12); Free ages six and under (please select the free ticket option for children six and under when using Eventbrite). Performance details and protocols will be sent in an email to ticket-holders prior to your arrival. Find the rain date policy on our website. Visitors are welcome to bring blankets and chairs to sit on during the performance.

Limited spaces for socially distanced seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis. Masks will not be required for fully vaccinated individuals. You can find the museums’ current COVID safety policies at FenimoreArt.org/safety.

“Shakespeare Abridged” was the show that launched Glimmer Globe Theatre nearly a decade ago, and it means the world to us to return to this play at such a hopeful and challenging time for theatre companies worldwide.

Additionally, Glimmer Globe Theatre is excited to present a brand-new Shakespeare Revue. This collaborative performance will present a selection of monologues and scenes from across the Bard’s body of work, and will allow more of our local community to join us in bringing back live Shakespeare this season. The Glimmer Globe Theatre Shakespeare Revue will take place in early September.

If you have any questions about the performances, please contact m.tamburrino@fenimoreart.org.

Fenimore Art Museum is located at 5798 State Route 80, less than one mile from the center of Cooperstown. For more information visit FenimoreArt.org. For more information on the current COVID-19 guidelines, visit FenimoreArtMuseum.org/safety. The museum is open daily this summer 10:00 a.m.–5:00 p.m.

Welcome to the Cobleskill Herald

Written By Editor on 7/3/21 | 7/3/21

Over the last five years, the Mountain Eagle, founded in 1982 by Donald Conover, has expanded to a variety of new areas, including Windham, Margaretville, Cairo, and more. Part of the reason for the consistent growth has been a dedication to offering a large amount of news-- local news, not fluff or national stories-- for just $1 per week.

This model has worked well, with the paper adding in a new section each year as readers from around the area turn toward our full color, full-court coverage. Each week, we’re committed to the most possible news from a Schoharie County perspective, with our headquarters in Schoharie and focus on all 16 towns.

Part of the reason we’re launching this new sister section of our newspaper is to fill a widening gap in local news coverage. You’ve seen it. You’ve noticed it, in particular over the last two years.

That is why we’ve collected a number of talented writers to offer the most Schoharie County coverage of any newspaper each and every week, plus another twenty pages (or more) of the surrounding area.

This has worked time and time again as we challenge the powers that be and build up local business and community events. Our team is fresh, experienced, and full of energy.

Please give us a shot, especially as our paper grows and currently is neck and neck for largest circulation of a Schoharie County weekly. We plan on growing with you each and every week.

Please send us any and all ideas to 518-763-6854 or
cobleskillherald@gmail.com and look for us on newsstands each Friday.
