IN CELEBRATION OF BRUNEL PARK'S THIRD YEAR ANNIVERSARY, THE FRIENDS OF BRUNEL PARK PRESENT AN AFTERNOON OF PERFORMANCE, POETRY, SPOKEN WORD, AND MUSIC AT BRUNEL SCULPTURE GARDEN.

We are excited to welcome our community back to Brunel Park for an afternoon of performances including a live reading of Mary Austin’s classic novel, "The Land of Little Rain,” by acclaimed actress Ellen Parker, a presentation of work by our inaugural BIPOC Artist-in- Residence, Karla Brundage, and readings by poet Jay Herman. In addition, we are incredibly honored to welcome back Spirit of Thunderheart who will perform their songs, dancing, and drumming to re-awaken ancient rhythms resonating with power and joy!

About the Artists:

Ellen Parker is an acclaimed film, theater, and television actress, known for her roles in the television series, "Guiding Light," for which she won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1993 for her portrayal of Maureen Reardon Bauer.

Her fine narration of Mary Austin's classic collection of meditations on the arid reaches of California is by turns intimate and inspiring and was honored by an Audiophile Earphone Award. Signed numbered CDs will be available for purchase.

Spirit of Thunderheart, a nationally recognized, multi-award winning Native American Women’s Drum Group based in the Hudson Valley, will perform between readings. "We believe our mission is to share the prayers of the drum with song and dance. We come together to educate about the importance of caring for each other with a good mind and strong cultural values. Through Story Telling we teach the understanding of our Oral and symbolic corrective history. Spirit of Thunderheart believes in teaching the importance of respecting, and caring for our Environment."

Poet, educator, editor, and activist Karla Brundage is an Artist in Residence in the Cranesbill Cabin at Brunel Park. Karla will read her poetry and from her literary memoir, of which her year-long teaching residency in Zimbabwe is an important component; the book also reflects on her experiences as a Black female student at Vassar College in the 1990s.

The mission of Jay Herman AKA Self-Written Poet is to build connection and community through the sharing of love and truth in their work. Self-Written Poet began performing spoken word and poetry in 2013, rewriting their own story and defining themselves on their terms. Their work centers around social justice issues, our interconnections, and life's journey.

Introducing Bright Hill’s Summer Junior and Senior Interns

Written By Editor on 7/14/21 | 7/14/21

Interns for the Young Collector's Club program are students from the region, most of whom are veterans of the BHLC Workshop program.

They include:

Jude Archer, a student at Bard High School in Manhattan and a long-term workshopper and intern at BHLC. Jude is experienced in writing essays, sestinas, and fiction stories in most media. His interests include animation/drawing, Magic: The Gathering (the card game for nerds), and games (video and physical).

Lila Archer, a rising 9th grader who has attended BHLC Summer Workshops since she was 5 years old. She remembers being nervous to go at first and then making friends and having fun. One of her favorite things about Bright Hill is all the art materials available for projects. She remembers using paper mache for the first time at Bright hill. Some of her favorite things are: making jewelry, playing soccer and most recently taking care of her growing collection of plants.

Griffin Leddy is a student at Franklin Central School; he partakes in many extracurricular activities such as ski club, band, and chorus. He enjoys spending time with friends and playing board games. He has been participating in Bright Hill workshops for many years and has been an intern for one year.
Ever since Evelyn Potrzeba, a student at Delaware Academy, has participated in Bright Hill’s workshops, she has experienced a plethora of knowledge and creative experience. She’s always felt welcomed by the environment and people around me since she moved to Treadwell in 2012. She’s enthusiastic about knowledge and logic, enjoys flying kites, and has been a student in 23 workshops as well as been a member of the Bright Kids Book Club for two years. She’s always felt that Bright Hill was a safe haven, away from glaring eyes and hatred. She’s enthusiastic about bringing these opportunities for improvement and inclusivity to others.
Anthony Hasselbarth lives in Sidney and currently attends SUNY Broome College; his major is art therapy. Anthony loves art with a burning passion and experiments in all different media. His favorite medium is charcoal. He cannot wait to teach the kids how to use make art in different ways, and he is looking forward to showing the ways art can help to heal. As Anthony says, “Art should never be work; it should be a time where you enjoy yourself.” He in interning at BHLC through the CDO Work Force.

Lars Shaman Burke was born in Oneonta, NY, lived part of his youth in Portland, Oregon, and now resides in East Meredith, NY.

He loves his dog, Beanie, who has helped him keep his sense of humor during the pandemic. Lars enjoys helping people with their problems. He also loves YouTube and would like to be able to help his family and friends.

Special Guest Artists Joins Concert at Hyde Hall

On July 23rd, the Musicians of Ma’alwyck return to Hyde Hall for a concert with special guest artists. Jörg-Michael Schwarz, violin, and Katrina Smith, viola, join the Musician of Ma’alwyck’s Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz, director and violin, to perform Dvořák‘s Miniatures paired with the trio of George Templeton Strong.

The program draws on the insights of George Templeton Strong who chronicled the musical scene in early America in his diaries. His sons were friends of the Clarke family and spent time at Hyde Hall; a portrait of Louis Strong still hangs in the Drawing Room. In this elegant string trio, Strong's other son, George, a well-respected composer, is coupled with music from Antonin Dvořák and readings from Strong's insightful diaries

The artists are first-rate and promise a memorable performance. Jörg-Michael Schwarz is a prize winner in several international violin competitions, one of North America’s leading Baroque violinists, and co-founder and co-director of the award-winning REBEL-Ensemble for Baroque Music, one of the world's premier early music groups.  Katrina Smith is a member of the Glimmerglass Festival Orchestra since 1999, is Co-Principal Violist of the Dallas Opera Orchestra, and Assistant Principal Violist of the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic, and substitutes regularly with the Rhode Island Philharmonic and Hartford Symphony Orchestra. Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz is director and violinist of Musicians of Ma’alwyck, performs with the Glimmerglass Opera Orchestra, teaches as an adjunct professor of violin and viola at Schenectady County Community College (SCCC) and at Union College.

Jonathan Maney, Hyde Hall’s Executive Director points out that “George Templeton Strong was one of America’s most important 19th-century diarists. The fact that his son lived at Hyde Hall for many years makes this concert both fitting and fun.”

“George Templeton Strong, Jr. was a fascinating figure,” says Ann-Marie Barker Schwartz. “His musical works reflect the romanticism of Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler, full of harmonic color and intensity. We pair his trio with the music of Dvořák, who visited America in the 1890s, and left with an ample impression of America's musical potential. The program will include readings from the Strong diaries about 19th- century America and its culture.”

The Concert begins at 7:30 PM on Hyde Hall’s south lawn. Concertgoers can purchase through HydeHall.org or at Eventbrite. In the event of inclement weather, the performance will be moved to the Milford Community Center.

Summer Colors at WFA

Featuring Ilona Sochynsky and Naomi Blum
Cadillac 2 by Ilona Sochynsky
48 x 56, Oil on Canvas
Awakening by Ilona Sochynsky
24 x 24, Oil on Canvas

Ilona Sochynsky's style progresses from hyper-realism to abstraction. Her early paintings depict recognizable single images with shiny, industrial surfaces but over time, she reconstructs her original works as unique abstract pieces. Sochynsky acknowledges the inevitability of reflection as a developing artist, detailing the intense scrutiny and introspection. Her current works of art represent an attempt to analyze the ebb and flow of the creative process with the beauty of trying new textures and paints.

Rushing Waters by Naomi Blum
50 x 66, Acrylic on Canvas
Floral by Naomi Blum
46 x 42, Acrylic on Canvas

For Abstract Expressionist painter Naomi Blum, landscapes have been the major subject of her paintings. Naomi’s inspiration stems from the natural beauty and wilderness of the Catskills. She originally worked on images that were non-representational but her focus is now on discovering elements from the natural world and incorporating them into her paintings. "Each painting is the result of  memory, imagination and the unknown element of intuition. As an artist, I can experiment and take chances to express my individuality which gives me a sense of freedom."
