EDEN RENEWABLES IS OFFERING $16,000 TO HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS IN THE CAPITAL REGION
DEADLINE FRIDAY, MAY 20, 2022

Troy, NY - The deadline is fast approaching for applications to the Eden Renewables annual scholarship program with a total value of $16,000.  Eden is a community solar farm developer based in Troy. High school seniors graduating from schools in communities which host Eden’s solar developments (see list below) and pursuing a career in fields that benefit the environment are invited to apply for ‘Green STEAM’ scholarships until May 20th.

Eden’s Green STEAM Scholarship was established in 2019 to encourage and support students interested in environmental careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM). So far, Eden has awarded $17,000 to 10 seniors attending Argyle, Duanesburg, Fonda-Fultonville, Hoosic Valley, Ichabod Crane, Maple Hill Junior-Senior, and Troy City High Schools, majoring in subjects such as Environmental Design, Environmental Science, Marine Biology and Wildlife Conservation.  

Awards of $1,000-$3,000 will be made to up to 10-15 students, depending on the quantity and quality of applications received.

Eden’s Chief Development Officer Giovanni Maruca said, “Eden has already supported 10 students in the region with their environmental career ambitions. We are living in very challenging times, so this year we are able to increase the funds available to $16,000 which I hope will make a positive difference to the futures of more young people - and help benefit the US long-term transition to a low-carbon economy.”

Recipients will be selected on the basis of academic record, demonstrated leadership, participation in school and community activities, honors, work experience, and statement of goals and aspirations. They will be formally awarded at each school’s graduation ceremony.

To be eligible, applicants must be a high school senior attending one of the host community schools, have a minimum of 3.0 cumulative GPA, and be accepted into a 2 or 4-year college or university and enrolled in Green STEAM or related discipline. A letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, or employer, and a 500-word statement of purpose regarding educational plans and professional aspirations in Green STEAM must be submitted with the application to be considered.

SUNY COBLESKILL’S WYATT PALMER NAMED NAC BASEBALL 2022 PITCHER-OF-THE-YEAR

Waterville, Me.: The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill junior Wyatt Palmer, Camden, N.Y., Camden High School/Cayuga Community College, has been named the conference’s 2022 NAC Baseball Pitcher-of-the-Year. The right-handed starter earned All-NAC Western Division Team honors during the season while being named the league’s Pitcher-of-the-Week four times during the year. He becomes the first Fighting Tiger pitcher in program history to earn NAC Pitcher-of-the-Year honors.  

During the season became the ace of the Fighting Tiger pitching staff this year as the transfer from Cayuga Community College posted a 7-2 record in nine starts to lead all NAC pitchers in victories with a 2.86 ERA in 50.1 innings of work hurling a pair of complete games including a nine-inning shutout. The Camden, N.Y. native held opposing hitters to a .257 batting average on the year striking our 33 hitters while walking 18.  

Cobleskill Head Lance Ratchford believed the junior right hander was the key to the team’s success because of his work on the mound throughout the year. 

“Wyatt Palmer was dominate all year for us and became the ace of our pitching staff. He made an immediate impact to our rotation and really got better with every start. He understands how to pitch and what he has to do in order to be successful." 

During the 2022 season Cobleskill posted their third consecutive winning season posting a 21-20 overall record capturing the league’s Western Division Championship for the second consecutive season with an 11-4 conference mark while making their third conference post-season appearance in four years.

SUNY COBLESKILL’S NEUBINSKI NAMED 2022 NORTH ATLANTIC CONFERENCE SOFTBALL COACH-OF-THE-YEAR

Waterville, Maine: The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill Head Softball Coach Elizabeth Neubinski has been selected as the 2022 NAC Softball Coach-of-the-Year by the league’s coaches. Neubinski led the Fighting Tigers to the conference’s Western Division Championship with an 11-1 conference record as part of a 15-15 campaign that saw Cobleskill make their first trip to the conference’s post-season tournament.  

During her four seasons at the helm of the program the Fighting Tigers have posted a 37-38 overall record including a 29-13 mark versus league opponents with 16 players having earned all-conference honors under her tutelage. 

When informed of her selection the Cobleskill Head Coach thanked those who helped make the 2022 campaign a special one for her and for the entire softball program.  

“I am so honored to receive this award and know that it is because of the incredible women in our program who trusted the process and gave their all every day. I could not imagine a better group and am so grateful for them. They push me every day to be better and have helped create our Fighting Tiger family. I also have to shout out to the best assistant and head athletic trainer I could ask for, Matt Rote, for all that he does for our program every single day. He is a huge part of our success, and we are so lucky to have him. Finally, a big thank you to our athletic director Marie Curran-Headley for her endless support and to everyone else at Cobleskill who works hard to support our program. It was truly a special season.”

SUNY COBLESKILL’S LOGAN HUTTER NAMED NAC BASEBALL 2022 ROOKIE-OF-THE-YEAR

Waterville, Me.: The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill first year catcher/designated hitter Logan Hutter, Smithtown, N.Y., Smithtown West High School, has been named the conference’s 2022 NAC Baseball Rookie-of-the-Year. The first year receiver becomes the first player in program history to earn NAC Baseball Rookie-of-the-Year honors after being named to All-NAC Western Division Team during the season earning the league’s Rookie-of-the-Week three times during the year.  

The catcher/designated hitter enjoyed an impressive rookie campaign wearing Orange & Black batting .355 going 44-of-124 on the year in 37 games compiling a .420 on-base percentage. The Smithtown, N.Y. native tallied 13 doubles and five home runs driving in 32 runs and scoring 29 times while showing good instincts on the bases going 10-for-11 in stolen base attempts.  

According to Fighting Tiger Head Coach Lance Ratchford, "Logan had an incredible freshman year and enjoy much success at the plate and behind the plate. He arguably had one of the best freshman years in the country at a position that is one of the toughest to play. His future is bright, and we are excited for what's in store for him next season."

SUNY COBLESKILL’S EDDY GARCIA NAMED NAC BASEBALL PLAYER-OF-THE-YEAR

Waterville, Me.: The North Atlantic Conference (NAC) announced today that SUNY Cobleskill senior shortstop Eddy Garcia, Bronx, N.Y., World View High School, has been named the 2022 NAC Baseball Player-of-the-Year. The Fighting Tiger shortstop becomes the first player in program history to earn NAC Baseball Player-of-the-Year honors after earning All-Conference honors in both the 2021 and 2022 seasons.  

The Fighting Tiger senior shortstop posted one of the most impressive statistical seasons’ in conference history displaying an impressive combination of power, speed and durability leading the conference in: games played with 41, plate appearances with 177, at bats with 147, hits with 54, runs scored with 48, doubles with 17, triples with six, runs batted in with 45, total bases with 101 and assists with 101.  

The Bronx, N.Y. native also finished ranked: second in slugging percentage at .687, third in stolen bases with 20, third in double plays generated defensively with 17, fifth in home runs with six, fifth in batting average hitting .367, ninth in on-base percentage at .449 and tenth in total defensive chances with 110.    

According to Fighting Tiger Head Coach Lance Ratchford the senior shortstop was the driving force behind the team’s success and highly deserving of the award.  

"To say that Eddy Garcia had an impressive year and put-up record numbers for our program just doesn’t seem adequate. He put a stamp on a career and set the standard for what we expect from our players to strive for year in and year out. Simply put, he was the catalyst of our team and one of the finest players to ever play baseball at SUNY Cobleskill. "

Otsego County Master Gardener Plant Sale returns May 21st

Rain or shine, the Master Gardeners of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Otsego County will hold their annual plant sale on Saturday, May 21, 2022, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Cornell Cooperative Extension Education Center, 123 Lake Street in Cooperstown.  Please note that the date of the sale is earlier this year, in past years it was traditionally held on the last weekend in May.

The selections at the Otsego Master Gardener Plant Sale were chosen with YOU in mind. We drew upon research from the Cornell Vegetable and Cornell Flower Trials, and the AAS Trials to grow a wide array of highly-rated plants that will be most successful in our area. Many are deer-resistant and/or disease-resistant, and many are varieties we have grown and loved ourselves. We grew the best for you!

A wide variety of vegetables, annual flowers, herbs, and perennials known to grow well in Otsego County will be featured at reasonable prices.  Choosing plant varieties not frequently found in local retail establishments, Master Gardener volunteers cultivated from seed heirloom and blight-resistant tomatoes, deer-resistant plants, and a few unusual varieties they love in their gardens.  All plants sold have been planted in sterile potting media. Unlike in past years, Master Gardeners will not be digging perennials from their gardens, in an effort to avoid the spread of jumping worms.  However, a limited selection of house plants from Master Gardeners’ own collections will be offered.

Cornell-trained Master Gardeners will be on hand to answer questions about planting, nurturing, and harvesting, and to assist in plant selections.  Customers are encouraged to bring boxes to carry home purchases.  Cash or checks are preferred, although credit cards are accepted.  For more information and continuing updates on plants offered, follow the webpage cceschoharie-otsego.org/OMG-Plant-Sale.  Gardeners may also leave a voicemail message at 607-547-2536 ext. 0 for questions.

Mental Health & Wellness Fair For Teens and Children May 21

Bassett Healthcare Network will be holding a mental health and wellness fair for teens and children on Saturday, May 21. The vent will take place from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at FoxCare Center, 1 FoxCare Drive, in Oneonta. All parents, families, and kids are all welcome to attend. The fair will include special activities, games, community resources, educational opportunities and over $1,000 in prizes. Local animal rescue Superheroes in Ripped Jeans will have animals onsite available for adoption. There will also be an open public yoga class (bring your own mat). 

 

Other participating organizations include Building Healthy Families, LEAF, Family Resource Network, Bassett’s Gender Wellness Center, Oneonta Boys and Girls Club, Child Advocacy Center, YMCA, Oneonta Teen Center, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, ONC BOCES, Oneonta Jiu Jitsu Academy, Table Rock Fitness, OWL, youth group organizations, and more.

Hyde Hall and Glimmerglass State Park Open with A Community Block Party

 

(COOPERSTOWN, NY) – Hyde Hall and Glimmerglass State Park open for the 2022 season on Saturday, May 28th with a new community celebration, the Hyde Hall and Glimmerglass State Park Block Party. The event marks the start of our area’s summer season and offers opportunities for the whole family from 10 AM - 3 PM. Twenty local organizations will participate with activities, animals, crafts, free programs, nature walks, and music around Hyde Hall’s campus and around Glimmerglass State Park.

Glimmerglass State Park, in partnership with Friends of Recreation, Conservation and Environmental Stewardship (FORCES), will offer workshops on birdhouse construction, leave no trace, fishing, camp safety, and provide guided hikes throughout the day. 

The Rolling Meadows Clydesdales, some of the largest horses in the United States, will return to the campus for another spectacular meet-and-greet. Visitors can learn more about them as they encounter these gentle giants firsthand. Other animal friends will join the Clydesdales, too. Utica ZooMobile is bringing animals for demonstrations, and the SPCA will have adoption opportunities to take home a new friend. 

The event has seen widespread community support, with more than a dozen local businesses sponsoring the event. Jonathan Maney, Hyde Hall’s Executive Director says “the Hyde Hall and Glimmerglass State Park Block Party is our way to welcome our local community into a deeper, richer, and more fun experience. Hyde Hall’s Event Manager Colin Havener added that “this is a first of what will become an annual event. Our community is amazing and this is our opportunity to celebrate with each other.”

There will be two concerts during the day: Hanzolo plays at Hyde Hall from noon to 2 pm, and the Bone Doctor performs in Glimmerglass State Park at 5 PM. The Cooperstown Food Pantry will be on-site with a food drive and you’re encouraged to bring something to share. The mansion also opens for tours on the 28th. A full schedule will be available on Hyde Hall’s website on May 25th. The event is free and open to the public but Glimmerglass State Park has a day-use fee for every vehicle.

SUNY COBLESKILL HAS SIX SOFTBALL PLAYERS EARN ALL-NAC TEAM HONORS

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill softball team received a program record six players honored with All-North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Team honors by the league’s coaches for the 2022 season. The Fighting Tigers captured the league’s Western Division Championship with an 11-1 record in conference action as part of a 15-15 season record.  

Earning spots on the NAC First Team were senior shortstop Maya Davies, Binghamton, N.Y., Chenango Valley High School/Onondaga Community College, senior outfielder Jillian Nitchman, Ballston Spa, N.Y., Ballston Spa High School, and sophomore pitcher Marissa Wheeler, Kinderhook, N.Y., Ichabod Crane High School. NAC Second Team spots went to senior pitcher Victoria Decker, Stone Ridge, N.Y., Rondout Valley High School, sophomore first baseman Alexis Miranda, Nashua, N.H., Nashua High School, and Senior second baseman Aubrie Marx, Rotterdam, N.Y., Mohanasen High School. Additionally, Victory Decker was named to the NAC Sportsmanship Team.  

Fighting Tiger Head Coach Liz Neubinski spoke with proud about her players individual accomplishments and their impact on the team’s success.   

“I am so excited and proud of all six of our All-Conference players for their recognition and receiving these honors. Not only did they all have incredible seasons on the field, but they are all incredible people who were an honor to coach and call Fighting Tigers.” 

Senior center fielder Jillian Nitchman closed her career with her third All-Conference Team honor after earning All-North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) honors in 2019 and All-NAC honors in 2021. For the year the Ballston Spa, N.Y. native batted .358 with an on-base percentage of .392 with four doubles, two triples and two home runs scoring 30 runs and driving in 16 runs on the season. Also considered one of the league’s top center fielders Nitchman posted a .976 fielding percentage in 41 chances this year. 

Senior shortstop Maya Davies made the transition from third base to shortstop this season as the transfer from Onondaga Community College enjoyed an exceptional season batting .379 on the year with an on-base percentage of .402 with an impressive slugging percentage of .674. This year the Binghamton, N.Y. native pounded out 36 hits in 30 games including nine doubles, two triples, five home runs while batting in a NAC league leading 34 runs to go with 24 runs scored on the season.  

Sophomore pitcher Mariss Wheeler had what Coach Neubinski described as a “breakout season” this year as the hard throwing Ichabod Crane High School alumnus posted an 8-5 record in 17 appearances including 13 starts with a 4.45 ERA throwing nine complete games including two shutouts with 74 strikeouts in 74 innings of work.  

Sophomore first baseman Alexis Miranda provided the Fighting Tigers with a combination of powerful offense and gold glove level defense as the Nashua, N.H. native handled 223 chances in the field without an error while helping the team rack up 10 double plays. At the plate, Miranda batted .355 with an on-base percentage of .406 and a .559 slugging percentage belting four doubles, three triples and four home runs on the year batting in 18 runs while scoring 26 times in 30 appearances.  

Senior second baseman Aubrie Marx came off the injury list this season to solidify the Orange & Black at the plate and in the field as evidenced by the number of plays she made in the field that robbed opponents of hits and the double plays she helped turn. In 16 appearances the Mohanasen High School alumnus batted .396 going 19-for-48 at the plate with an on-base percentage of .463. Marx proved to be a clutch hitter with a triple and five doubles leading to 15 RBI and 17 runs scored in her limited playing time.  

Senior pitcher Victoria Decker was the workhorse of the staff this season posting a 6-9 overall record in 19 appearances including 15 starts compiling a 3.76 ERA in 83.2 innings of work. The Stone Ridge, N.Y. native struck out 43 hitters while walking only 20 on the year completing eight games while tossing a pair of shutouts.  

Victoria Decker was also selected to the NAC Sportsmanship team which honors student-athletes in keeping with the conference's theme of "Creating an Atmosphere of Respect" for each of its sports. The establishment of the Sportsmanship Team in all sports is in concert with the league's ultimate goal to create an atmosphere that places the highest regard for exemplary behavior of all participants, coaches, administrators, fans and officials.

State Police arrested a town of Greenville man for Burglary and possession of cocaine

Catskill, NY - On May 7, 2022, at approximately 10:30 p.m., state police from the Catskill barracks responded to the Catskill Inn on State Route 9w in the town of Catskill for a report of an assault with weapons. Upon arrival troopers spoke with the victim who state that three males entered his room and began punching him and shooting him with a bb gun. He then stated the assailants fled the area all in different directions. One of the suspects fled the area in a black Ford pick-up truck. The victim was transported to Columbia Memorial Hospital by Catskill ambulance.

Troopers began a search for the suspects. They observed a vehicle that fit the description of the victim enter a Cumberland Farms gas station on Main Street in the town of Cairo. The vehicle, 2004 Ford Ranger and was operated by Christopher Stanton, age 40 from the town of Greenville, Greene County. While being questioned he was found to be in possession of crack-cocaine and a metal knuckle knife, he was subsequently arrested. After speaking with troopers, Stanton was charged with Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd degree, Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 5th degree, and Burglary: Entering a Dwelling Causing Injury, all felonies.

Stanton was arraigned in the Town of Cairo Court and remanded to Greene County Jail in lieu of $25,000 cash bail, $50,000 bond, or $100,000 partially secured bond.  He has a return date for Catskill Court on May 12, 2022, at 4:00 p.m.

This investigation is ongoing.

The Green Toad Bookstore Presents Christine Alexander’s Art

ONEONTA -  Jim Havener, proprietor of Oneonta’s Green Toad Bookstore, has opened his premises to the display of art works by local artist Christine Alexander of East Meredith.

 

Twenty-one of Christine’s artworks, primarily acrylic paintings, will be on display and for sale from May 4, 2022, to May 31, 2022. There will also be a “Meet the Artist” event from 1 – 3 pm on Saturday, May 7, at the Green Toad Bookstore, 198 Main street, Oneonta. Everyone is welcome to come.

 

Christine’s works are abstract, colorful, and playful. She has exhibited in many single and group shows around the area, along with many shows in other regions of NY, and other states. She says, “I paint because I have to. The materials, the colors, and the forms all call out to me, and I have to answer.” 

 

Jim, always open to the community and its possibilities, says, “I’m delighted to show Christine’s lovely and fascinating work in the Green Toad. I support all the arts in my store: writing, readings, painting, drawing, and music; in fact, I’d happily support dance if I just had more space.”

Chicken BBQ at Methodist Church May 14th

The Middleburgh Methodist Church (281 Main St., Middleburgh) is holding a BBQ Chicken Dinner drive-thru on Saturday, May 14th from 1 p.m. till sold out. All side dishes are homemade: baked beans, macaroni salad, coleslaw, bread.
