M'burgh Village to Seek State Grant to Rehab Pool

Written By The Mountain Eagle on 9/19/25 | 9/19/25

By David Avitabile

MIDDLEBURGH - The Village of Middleburgh will be seeking state grant funding to do a rehab of the aging village pool.

Village officials are expected to apply for a New York Swims Grant by the end of next month.

Mike Wilkens of the Joint Recreation Commission spoke to the village board last week about the condition of the nearly 60-year-old pool and what upgrades are needed.

Representatives from Delaware Engineering did an assessment on the pool, Mr. Wilkens told board members.

The report noted that the pool itself, is structurally sound, aside from needing new tiles and a cover. The other building and structures are in "bad shape" and need replacement, Mr. Wilkens reported.

The filtration system, the bathrooms, the pump station, the showers, the changing rooms, and the office need to be rebuilt.

Officials do not have an estimate, but the cost could be $1 million or more, Mr. Wilkens said. The grant is an "80-20" grant and the village would be responsible for 20 percent of the cost, possibly $200,000 to $300,000.

The grant, Mr. Wilkens said, is very competitive and "no guarantee, but worth a shot."

Mayor Tim Knight said the village could not apply for the grant last year but there is a new formula this year.

The Middleburgh Pool Revitalization Committee, which was convened last summer, gave the go ahead to apply for the grant.

The grant application is due at the end of October. The village should have the costs from the engineer by next month. The application can be approved next month as no public hearing is needed.

The pool needs an upgrade, officials agreed.

"It's certainly an important part of the community," said Trustee Bob Tinker.

To help with the local funding match, Mr. Wilkens said, donations will be important. He knows there are people interested in donating.

The pool was built behind the high school in 1967 or 1968.

Some concrete repairs were done in 2022 for $33,000 and funded out of the pool repair fund. Some of the areas that were repaired, as well as new ones, are deteriorating, Mr. Wilkens said last year.

The pool repair fund, which totaled $39,000 last year, does not have enough money in it to pay for major repairs.

A complete pool replacement could be very expensive.

Mayor Knight noted last year that the new Stamford pool cost between $2.5 and $3 million.

Officials also noted that in addition to repairs, the pool is not ADA compliant.

From 9 AM to 3 PM, the MCS Alumni Association will display school memorabilia and have Alumni clothing available in the gym lobby. Donated proceeds from the event will go toward the Alumni Award given at graduation. The next meeting of the Middleburgh Alumni Association will be November 20, 2025 in the Middleburgh Public Library at 10:15 AM. New Tavern Coming to M'burgh

By David Avitabile

MIDDLEBURGH - It may be a different color and another animal, but the former Green Wolf in Middleburgh will have a new tavern soon.

The Yellow Dog Tavern is slated to be opened on Main Street later this fall. Village officials discussed the request by Yellow Dog Tavern and owner Joe Bilello for a liquor license in August.

Mr. Bilello told village board members over the phone that he hoped to open the tavern as soon as possible after the license is approved.

Mr. Bilello said he is a former resident of Middleburgh and hopes to be again soon. He is very excited about reopening the bar, possibly as soon as October.

He recently visited a friend in Cobleskill and "fell in love with Middleburgh" and found out that the location was vacant. It has been vacant since the Green Wolf closed earlier this year.

"I'm really excited to get back there," Mr. Bilello told village board members.

Unlike the Green Wolf, Mr. Bilello said he plans to put in a small kitchen to serve "pub food."

He is trying for a full liquor license, though it may be difficult because of the proximity to the church across the street.

"It's great to have it open," and have it back again, said Trustee Sheryl Adams.

Mr. Bilello and his attorney asked the village to waive the statutory 30-day waiting period to allow Mr. Bilello to apply for an on-premises liquor license and temporary retail permit.

Paving Planned In M'burgh

MIDDLEBURGH - On Wednesday, September 24 and Thursday, September 25 – contingent upon good weather – Wells Avenue and Straub Lane in Middleburgh will be temporarily closed from approximately 7AM to 5PM as the Village DPW makes improvements to these streets, officials announced.

The entirety of Wells Avenue will be milled on Wednesday, September 24 and then paved on Thursday, September 25 while Straub Lane will be paved from 122 Straub Lane to Main Street on Thursday, September 25.

Residents of Wells Avenue and Straub Lane will not be able to enter or exit their streets for the majority of construction, so parking arrangements will need to be made elsewhere. Village officials appreciate your patience and understanding as they make these vital improvements to the Village infrastructure.

A letter has been mailed to residents of Wells Avenue and Straub Lane with details about the upcoming construction work and updates will be provided as necessary.

SchoCo Pride Establishment Begins Planning Local 2026 Event

By Lei Rowan

MIDDLEBURGH– Last Thursday, several community members came together to start coordinating SchoCo Pride, aiming to coordinate a large Pride event starting June 2026 right here in Schoharie county. The group discussed possible events to do, locations, and funding necessities.

Sam Addams facilitated the meeting along with other friends such as Krissy Traver and Casey Chanton. A meeting schedule was provided, and ground rules established included being respectful of others, not talking over one another, and allowing everyone to voice their ideas, comments, and concerns. Roles assigned for the meeting include facilitator, note keeper, time keeper, and liaison.

SchoCo Pride is currently planning on having an educational vendor fair as the local pride event, informing the count more about the queer community, as well as providing resources for LGBTQ+ people who may need it.

“Street fests are what Middleburgh is known for,” one member stated.

Proposed booths currently include how to change your legal name, different gender and sexual orientations, and gender affirming clothing, with more to be decided.

Another goal of the organization is to show locally that LGBTQ+ people are just like everyone else and deserve the same respect.

“We’ve been gay the whole time, don’t let anyone tell you otherwise,” Krissy Traver told the group.

Currently, SchoCo Pride is still being established. The group plans on potentially starting a non-profit 501(c)3 prior to setting up large-scale events. The largest question is where to find funding for upkeep and events. The meeting discussed potential sponsors and smaller pride events throughout the year to raise money, as well as a small fee for vendors at the possible large street-fest Pride in June.

The details for SchoCo Pride are still in the early stages of development. If you’d like to join future meetings, mailing lists, or Discord, contact schoharielgbtqia@gmail.com for more information.

Schoharie Crushes Fonda-Fultonville - Monday Night Soccer!

Schoharie traveled to Fonda-Fultonville for a key early season WAC match up Monday night. The teams battled early on as the home team Valley Hawks repeatedly turned away the Storm attack.

Fonda’s goalkeeper Alex Pullen-Castillo made several incredible saves to help his team as well.

Finally, midway through the half Aiden McGough tallied for the visiting Storm off a deflected header to take a 1-0 lead at the half.

Fonda-Fultonville came out in the second half showing that they would not give up and earned a beautiful through ball that Tanner Sadel collected and beat the storm GK to tie the game! That goal seemed to ignite the Storm who then scored 6 unanswered goals, as their attack proved too much for the Hawks.

Max Kenny would have a hat trick on the evening, beginning with a header from a Ben Bengtson corner kick. Bengtson would also assist freshman Ben Borst’s first varsity goal, Caleb Cain and RJ Smith also scored for the Storm. Tucker Hernigle had a great game for Fonda as he demonstrated skill and talent and a never give up attitude. Alex Wray made 5 saves on 6 shots for Schoharie and commanded his defense well. Corners were similar at 3-2 but in favor of the Storm.

Special thanks to Prince Knight for the information.
