The Best Gifts from Schoharie County

$1.48 Million Grant Will Streamline Addiction Services, Increase Access to Care in Region

Written By Editor on 4/20/21 | 4/20/21

UTICA, NY – Addiction services providers in the region will soon receive a much-needed boost of funding to support their critical work in
addressing the opioid epidemic, thanks to a $1.48 million grant from the New York State Office of Addiction Services and Supports (OASAS). The
Mohawk Valley Behavioral Health Care Collaborative and the South Central Behavioral Health Care Collaborative, soon to be one merged
organization, will use this funding to strengthen their prevention, treatment, and recovery care services throughout 11 counties: Broome,
Cortland, Chenango, Delaware, Fulton, Herkimer, Madison, Montgomery, Otsego, Schoharie, and Tompkins. In particular, this grant will help
local agencies Alcohol and Drug Abuse Council of Delaware County; Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Council of HFM; Beacon Center; Catholic
Charities of Herkimer County; Delaware County Department of Mental Health; Family & Children’s Counseling Services; Friends of Recovery of
Delaware and Otsego (FOR-DO); Leatherstocking Education on Alcoholism and Addictions Foundation, Inc. (LEAF, Inc.); and Otsego County
Community Services provide services to our neighbors in need.

“We strongly believe that regionally integrated addiction services will result in increased access to services, higher levels of care coordination,
and better care for our area’s residents,” said Kelly Lane, Director of the Mohawk Valley Behavioral Health Care Collaborative. “This significant
grant will allow clinical and other community-based organizations to work together, using technology and a coordinated approach across the
continuum of care for our clients.”

This initiative will focus on the following areas:

Prevention
Address gaps in prevention services by helping families improve communication, decrease conflict and learn how to deal with issues of
substance abuse. Prevention activities will also target employment settings by promoting workplace wellness and efforts to reduce
substance misuse among the workforce.

Treatment
Provide evidence-based treatment using the Pathways Hub model and a new web-based referral system that supports care
management by creating formal links between treatment providers and other community-based organizations.

Recovery
Provide infrastructure for a broader peer-support approach that helps justice-system-involved individuals and others return to the
workforce.

The two collaborating organizations have convened a leadership team with specialists from a variety of service provider organizations
throughout the region, including clinical and non-clinical community-based organizations. This assures that an integrated approach to addiction
services will also address social determinants of health, including food and housing insecurities, access to health insurance, access to childcare,
and employment services.

The Collaborative uses cross-systems partnerships to ensure individuals in its service area have access to well-coordinated, high quality,
community-based mental health and substance abuse services and supports, prevention, and other critical services. Using a data-driven and
patient-centered approach, the Collaborative reduces healthcare costs and improves the quality of care for all. For more information, visit

Greene Co Offers Pandemic Compliance Resources for Businesses

As more and more New Yorkers are vaccinated and eager to gather, travel, and attend events & performances, NYS continues to issue specialized requirements for businesses to re-open safely. Businesses that serve or attract large groups of people must comply with specific NYS guidance that may be difficult for owners and operators to navigate. Businesses are required (by NYS ) to notify The Greene County Public Health Department five days prior to reopening or hosting events.

Therefore, in support of our local Wedding, Events, Entertainment and Performance businesses, Greene County has created a new on-line resource to help them comply with NYS requirements. A gateway web page on GreeneGovernment.com lists each affected business category, and links to the specific compliance requirements for each.

“Our businesses are very eager to welcome customers, guests and audiences back into their facilities” notes Patrick S. Linger – Chair of the Greene County Legislature. “Aside from the financial challenges caused by the pandemic, many owners and operators are experiencing difficulties finding and following the compliance procedures required by NYS. Greene County is applying extra communication and technology resources to help streamline the process.”

Businesses are required to read and affirm the NYS Department of Health Guidance specific to their safe operation. Owners and operators of Greene County businesses can download, read and affirm this guidance directly from these easy-to-follow web pages, and also submit forms to the Greene County Public Health Department as required for Weddings, Events, and Performances. Indoor Amusement & Family Entertainment businesses can download a fillable re-opening plan template and submit it to the county as required by NYS.

This resource will be continually updated as more guidance and requirements are issued by New York State.

Remember to follow Greene County Government and the Greene County Public Health Department for immediate updates on new information regarding the pandemic.

The virtual career exploration event will inform and inspire area youth by showing the diverse spectrum of skills in demand for jobs of all abilities, helping to prime local workforce development. Participating employers represent the broad array of available career clusters, from healthcare, advanced manufacturing, construction and tourism, to marketing, food distribution, public service and support for those with disabilities. A particular unique aspect of Career Jam is having employers share a video of  job or related skill to demonstrate to youth fundamental capabilities applied daily. Career Jam is virtually accessible via computer or mobile device to students and their families, teachers and participating employers. The exclusive period for Columbia and Greene counties schools runs through April 26th before opening up for the entire capital region until May 28th.

“We need to be active partners in shaping our region’s 21st Century Workforce,” said F. Michael Tucker, President and CEO, Columbia Economic Development Corporation. “By collaborating with local employers and educators, we are inspiring local kids by the full breadth of what’s possible in terms of promising jobs that lead to meaningful careers and lives in our area. Having a workforce pipeline of talent helps our local small businesses, farms, tourist destinations, healthcare, automotive, construction and manufacturing employers continue to prosper.”

“Workforce development is economic development,” said Karl Heck, Executive Director of the Greene County Economic Development Corporation. “Anytime we talk with local employers, having a pool of able and willing employees to draw on is critically important. We have a diversity of industries with a great quality of life here in Greene County. Showing our local youth what’s possible in terms of building a career here to support our communities is important to retaining talent to live, work and play here, now and in the future.”

Expected to reach as many as 1,200 Columbia and Greene County 8th & 9th grade students across most area school districts, Career Jam’s unique features include short employer videos demonstrating skills in demand at their workplace to inspire students’ future courses of study. Questar III BOCES and Columbia-Greene Community College are also participating, showcasing their career and technical education (CTE) and degree programs respectively. These direct career pathways to employment in healthcare, automotive technology, criminal justice, construction, and other fields in need of workers can lead to strong salaried jobs after graduation.

“We are pleased to be part of this regional effort to introduce students to careers in our region,” said Dr. Gladys Cruz, District Superintendent of Questar III BOCES, serving 22 school districts in Rensselaer, Columbia, and Greene counties. “Our BOCES has long-supported opportunities for students to explore careers and interact with local business and higher education partners. We encourage students and families to attend virtually to learn more about the exciting career pathways available in Columbia and Greene counties, as well as the ways they can begin this journey during their high school years.”

Career Jam’s virtual career booths, video presentations in the virtual auditorium, as well as ability to text questions to employers about their workplace or career options, help inspire students’ career readiness. All the content can be captured to a virtual backpack for students to download for review with teachers, guidance counselors and at home. The 2021 Career Jam is available through May 28th. Students are encouraged to login with their families to prompt discussions about the meaningful local careers possible and pathways to study in preparation for them.

Cairo-based small business owner and video producer, Kevin Witte Jr. Productions, shared a short video in the Career Jam describing five easy tips to make a quality video. It was designed to provide something that is both engaging to many teenage students, but also fundamental to skills required for marketing in the digital economy. Greenport’s Ginsberg’s Foods included a wide variety of helpful employment backgrounds. They produced a fun and engaging video on a day in the life of that longtime local employer. One of their employees, Alex, talked about his experience finding his job and working at Ginsberg’s Foods adding perspective for area youth.

Sponsors include regional employers with Columbia-Greene based service and jobs, such as Siemens and KeyBankCapital District Center for Independence, the Workforce Development Institute (WDI), supporting the many trades regionally, as well as Glaxo-Smith-Kline (GSK)GSK Oak Hill (in Durham, Greene County) specializes in manufacturing globally recognized brands of toothpaste (Sensodyne, Pronamel, Aquafresh and Polident) producing on average 5 million tubes of it every week supplying most of the continental US and Canada.

Job Fair May 2nd

Greene County and Columbia-Greene Workforce New York will be hosting a multi-resort hospitality job fair at the Blackthorne Resort, 348 Sunside Road in East Durham, to fill full-time, part-time, seasonal and other employment positions from ages 14 and up, on Sunday, May 2 from 1-3 p.m. Applicants are encouraged to bring resumes, be ready to complete applications and conduct interviews at the Hospitality Job Fair.

The Hospitality Job Fair is a multi-resort owner event at Blackthorne Resort. Zoom Flume Water Park is one of the main employers that will be present. Several other hospitality businesses will be attending, and a variety of employment positions are available through the Hospitality Job Fair.

“As businesses begin to resume regular activities as more of the population is vaccinated and travel increases, there is a need for additional employees for tourism-related businesses,” said Deputy County Administrator Warren Hart. Hart noted that Zoom Flume Water Park, a major seasonal business in the Town of Durham, did not have a 2020 season due to COVID-19 restrictions. As a result, Zoom Flume lost its entire workforce and revenue for the year, and is starting over with new employees for 2021.

“With high unemployment rates and businesses in need of workers, the Workforce Office looks forward to connecting Greene County employers and workers safely and conveniently,” said Chris Nardone, Director of Columbia-Greene Workforce New York.

Masks will be required to be worn for all attendees and social distancing requirements will be maintained. There will be a check-in procedure in accordance with State mandates.

Opinion: Supporting the Hunter Branch Rail Trail

Written By Editor on 4/15/21 | 4/15/21

The Hunter Branch Rail Trail is a forward-thinking project that advances many community and state plan objectives when it comes to outdoor recreation.  It will help disperse visitors offering another recreational outlet, it will boost recreational tourism which our counties rely upon, and it will allow those with physical challenges to enjoy the outdoors and serenity this segment of the Hunter trail network provides.  Moreover, constructing the trail to be accessible for people with disabilities is certainly a complementary tribute to what Camp Jened stood for – enabling people with disabilities to experience the great outdoors like anyone else.

C-GCC’s Workforce Investment Office Receives Grant

The Workforce Investment Office (WIO) at Columbia-Greene Community College recently received a $10,000 grant from the Hudson River Bank and Trust (HRBT) Foundation. These funds will be used to purchase a virtual recruitment and job fair platform that will enable the WIO to host virtual job fairs, recruitment events, and webinars. This valuable resource not only will benefit the business community but also C-GCC students seeking jobs after graduation.

“Clearly during this past year, seeking a job anywhere has been challenging. The Foundation members fully recognize that the virtual recruitment and job fair platform will assist the community with a more streamlined approach and simplify the job-hunting process,” said Carl Florio, President of the HRBT Foundation.

Christopher Nardone, Director of the Columbia-Greene Workforce Investment Office, added, “With high unemployment rates and businesses in need of workers, bridging the gap between technology and human interaction has never been more important. Throughout Columbia and Greene counties, businesses need employees while dislocated workers struggle to rebuild. Traditional methods of recruiting and hiring are no longer sufficient. The funding support received from the HRBT Foundation to purchase this training platform will conveniently connect employers and job seekers, thereby strengthening our economy and our communities.”

The Columbia-Greene Workforce Office at Columbia-Greene Community College provides a wide range of free services to youth, businesses, and job seekers. For more information, visit columbiagreeneworks.org or call 518.828.4181.

The Hudson River Bank and Trust Foundation originated when the Hudson River Bank & Trust Co. converted into a public company in July 1998. The organization provides funding to support charitable causes and community development activities in Columbia County. For more information about the Foundation, visit hrbtfoundation.com.

Greene County Vaccination Sites Available Online

Written By Editor on 4/9/21 | 4/9/21

The addition of these PODs to this website, located at VaccineFinder, is part of an ongoing effort to ensure all Greene County residents are aware of where they can go to receive COVID-19 vaccinations. As COVID-19 vaccination guidance and regulations are frequently changing, having access to up-to-date information is critical for every member of the community.

As of April 8th, there are many providers within Greene County that are currently listed on VaccineFinder. This includes pharmacies and other important PODs, such as the Greene County Public Health Department. While searching for available PODs, you can find information about each one, such as:

  • Type(s) of vaccine(s) provided (Moderna, Pfizer, or Johnson & Johnson)
  • Distance from a specific zip code/search radius
  • Availability of vaccines
  • Hours and contact info
  • Directions to and from each specific POD

We strongly advise any resident using VaccineFinder to locate a Greene County POD to call ahead or visit the provider’s website. Appointments are required at most locations and walk-ins will not be accepted. Calling ahead is also recommended to ensure that any chosen POD has vaccines available.

Greene County will continue to inform our residents when more groups become eligible under the NYS plan.

Residents are encouraged to utilize our Vaccination Notification Request Form as well as any additional registration options available from the State and participating pharmacies to stay in the know about all COVID-19 vaccination updates.

Libertarian Party of New York Calls For Fiscal Responsibility in Albany

Last night, under typical late-night cover, the Fiscal Year Year 2022 Budget was passed by the New York State Legislature. The budget, which includes heavy tax increases for high wage earners, has ballooned by nearly 10% over the 2021 budget - the largest since 2007 - and 22.5% over 2020.

The spending highlights include:
  • $111 billion for the State Operating Fund, a nearly 10% increase;
  • $29.5 billion for school aid, a $3 billion increase;
  • $29 billion in public and private green economy investments;
  • $385 million for the State and Municipal Facilities Program (SMFP), a stimulus slush fund that can be used for any state or local capital improvement projects.

Cody Anderson, Chair of the Libertarian Party of New York, while decrying Albany’s lack of fiscal responsibility, was not surprised by these increases.

“Of course Albany is spending more without regard for impact on local communities,” Anderson stated. “Albany has appropriated hundreds of millions of dollars to the SMFP in an attempt to woo constituents and influence their own re-election, yet their continued acts of wage theft are causing more than one hundred thousand residents per year to take their earning and spending power to other states. Our per-student expenditures are already the highest in the nation, school age enrollment in our public schools continues to drop, yet Governor Cuomo and the Legislature increased education spending by over eleven percent in continued support of a bloated state bureaucracy which produces mediocre outcomes. Nearly fourteen percent of the State Budget subsidizes unprofitable renewable energy projects, prioritizing excess takings over economic sense, local control and energy diversity.

“The politicians in Albany fund their bloated vanity projects with continued tax increases that chase away those businesses and individuals who drive our economy. Albany needs to reset their expectations, exercise a modicum of fiscal responsibility, and give the citizens of New York State a chance to thrive and more reasons to stay.”
