From the Sheriff's Desk: September 11th

Written By Editor on 9/7/21 | 9/7/21

As we approach the 20th anniversary of the September 11th terror attacks on our country, I would like to take this opportunity and ask you to remember and reflect on that somber day.  Remember the horror.  Remember the heroism.  Remember the way it stunned and united the nation.

For those too young or not yet born, the events of that day maybe be difficult to comprehend. But they must be.

The world will never forget the innocent victims and the brave heroes who rushed headlong into an unknown fate.  The world will never forget the survivors, the devastated families and the grieving friends left behind.

More than 3,000 people died or remain missing following the attacks. They came from more than 80 different nations, from many different races and religions.
343 firefighters and paramedics perished at the World Trade Center (WTC).
23 police officers and 37 Port Authority police officers died at WTC.
2,000 children lost a parent, of them 146 children lost a parent in the Pentagon attacks.
One business alone lost more than 700 employees, leaving at least 50 pregnant widows.

It didn’t matter to the first responders where the victims of these attacks came from.  They charged forward with the noble goal of evacuating everyone.  Countless lives were saved thanks to the unwavering courage and honor of first responders.

In the years following September 11th, many more first responders would perish as a result of disease and sickness associated with toxins exposed at the attack sites.  These valiant and heroic rescue efforts resulted in a very painful price.

Every one of the victims who died was the most important person on earth to somebody.  We must never forget that.

The country became united that day.  The unity of our nation on that day is still a vivid memory for me.

In closing, I ask you to take some time and educate our youth on the events of that day.  Tell them about the sacrifices.  Tell them about the innocent lives lost.  Tell them about the togetherness we all experienced in the days, weeks and months that followed.  Tell them we can unite as a Country for the good of all Americans.  To me, that is the most important reflection of September 11th.

May God Bless the victims, the first responders and every American as we remember this solemn day.

Very respectfully,

Sheriff Craig S. DuMond

Rug Braiding workshop with Adirondack Rug Braider, Helen Condon

Written By Editor on 9/5/21 | 9/5/21

The Schoharie River Center, located in Burtonsville near Esperance, NY, announces a two-day workshop with Master Rug Braider, Helen Condon on Saturday and Sunday, October 2 and 3, 2021.

Over the space of a weekend (12 hours), participants will complete a Braided Herb Gathering Basket Workshop with instruction provided by Adirondack Rug Braider,  Helen Condon.  She will teach the traditional method of making a braided rag rug out of recycled materials.  Participants will learn how to take apart old woolen clothes and blankets and recycle them into beautiful handmade colorful traditional braided rugs and other items, including the completion of a braided basket.

Pre-registration is required: $75.00 SRC members, $100 for non-members of the Schoharie River Center.  There will be a materials cost of $25.00 which includes all materials and equipment (twine, clamp, needle, and instruction booklet). Register on-line www.schoharierivercenter.org or call 518-875-6230.  The workshop is limited to eight participants.

Helen Condon learned the art of rag rug braiding over fifty years ago from her grandmother, Sarah Campbell Taylor, who taught her how to make braided rugs using discarded, wool clothing. Using the skills in braiding and matching colors learned at thirteen years old, (combined with a better way of joining the braids learned from Sally Cheney in Hebron, Connecticut), Helen has honed these skills to form her life work. Well-known throughout the Northeast, Helen Condon teaches rug braiding workshops in her studio and at such premier establishments as the Farmer's Museum in Cooperstown and the Sagamore Institute. From her studio in Parishville, NY, (a re-purposed Grange Hall) Helen continues to teach and to sell her work. Always a “hit,” SHE IS RETURNING TO THE SCHOHARIE RIVER CENTER BY POPULAR REQUEST.

The Schoharie River Center is a non-profit environmental and cultural organization, located in Burtonsville, New York.  Funding for this series of Folk Arts workshops was provided by the New York State Council on the Arts, a state agency.  Burtonsville lies on the Schoharie Creek just north of the Village of Esperance.   To reach the workshop site, take Burtonsville Road from Esperance and travel approximately four miles to the hamlet of Burtonsville.  For event details and directions, consult the website of the Schoharie River Center, www.schoharierivercenter.org.

Greenville’s Drive-In 32 presents QWERTY: Typewriter and the Letter Arts Festival Vol.5

Greenville’s Drive-In 32 Outdoor Cinema will be hosting its fifth QWERTY Typewriter & the Letter Arts Festival from September 22 through 26, 2021 both at the drive-in and at the Greenville Public Library.

QWERTY Vol. 5 will take a closer look at typography and its impact on culture through typewriter exhibits, workshops, films and a live performance by The Boston Typewriter Orchestra. All QWERTY events are open and free to the public. However, tickets are recommended and are available at www.drivein32.com.

“Since the first QWERTY in 2016, it was clear that the typewriter is still inspiring creativity and fun for visitors of all ages,” said Leigh Van Swall. “Each festival has been such an eye-opening and exciting experience for people, it is a highlight each season.”

To kick off QWERTY, Van Swall, who owns Greenville’s Drive-In 32 with her husband, Dwight Grimm, will host My TYPE of Film, at the Greenville Public Library on Wednesday, September 22 at 7 p.m. Van Swall will explore the diversity and impact of typeface relating to film. Participants will also have a chance to type their own haiku to be added to the poetry wall at the drive-in.

Shifting to Saturday, September 25 at 4 p.m., the QWERTY Typewriter Festival will take place at Greenville’s Drive-In 32 with a “type-in” featuring the typewriter collection of Erik Molbach as well as a Typewriter Evolution Exhibit in the snack bar, postcard station, raffle, and a performance by The Boston Typewriter Orchestra. The evening will end with a screening of the 2002 Steven Spielberg film “Catch Me If You Can,” starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. The film is rated PG-13.

Finishing the festival on Sunday, September 26 is the return screening of “Helvetica”; the 2007 documentary about typography, graphic design and global visual culture.

Although the typewriter may seem like a reminiscent device of generations past, QWERTY has invigorated it for the generations of the future.

Olivia M., 12, of Greenville has attended each QWERTY festival and recommends it to everyone.

“I learned to use a typewriter and I love them all because of QWERTY,” said Olivia. “I got to teach my little sister how to use one before she started kindergarten last year and I recommend that all kids type on a typewriter, it is a fun hobby for anyone.”

QWERTY Vol. 5 is made possible with funds from the Decentralization Program, a regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of the New York State Governor’s Office and the New York State Legislature and administered in Schoharie County by the Greene County Council on the Arts dba CREATE Council for Resources to Enrich the Arts, Technology and Education.

Children’s Art and Poetry Focused on Catskills Water at Water Discovery Center in Arkville Through October

September 3 (Arkville) Children’s artwork and poetry related to Catskills water, its journey to, and use in, New York City is on display at the Catskill Water Discovery Center, 669 Hwy 38, Arkville, Saturdays 12 - 3 through October, or by appointment, for groups and school classes. The exhibit features the winning entries of NYC DEP’s Water Resources Art and Poetry Contest. Inspired by contest themes, which incorporate STEM and humanities disciplines, the work addresses:

·         Water, A Precious Resource: To recognize the importance of a clean and plentiful supply of water.

·         New York City Water Supply System: To explore the history of the New York City’s Water Supply System and its present-day source, operation, delivery, protection and maintenance.

·         Water Stewardship and Climate Change: What can we do to help? To consider our influence on the environment and how we can address and take action on environmental issues that influence our neighborhoods, our city, and beyond.

The exhibit complements the Center’s permanent exhibition, a timeline history of the NYC Water Supply System, from the suitability of the Catskills to provide the country’s largest city with clean, abundant supplies of fresh water, to the sacrifices made by the local population, to the cooperation achieved by upstate and downstate leaders and advocates, yielding an unprecedented, unparalleled system.
