WRITERS IN THE MOUNTAINS (WIM) PRESENTS FIND YOUR VOICE. GET INTO COLLEGE WITH AMY RANDALL

Written By Editor on 9/5/22 | 9/5/22

Writers in the Mountains (WIM) presents Find Your Voice. Get Into College with Amy Randall, teaching students how to craft a powerful personal essay for college admissions. The program will be presented in two separate three-week sessions (90 minutes each) Saturday, October 1, 8, 15 @2:30 pm or Saturday, December 3, 10, 17 @2:30 pm at Birdsong Farm Meeting Hall, Route 10, Hamden, NY. The class fee is $90 for each three-week session (scholarships are available). Each session is limited to ten students.

Are you ready to write your college essay? Don't know where to start? What to say? How to distinguish yourself? In this workshop, we begin by identifying your unique voice, so the story you tell is genuinely you. With authenticity as our starting point, we will craft essays that can inspire any reader. The resulting personal statement will be a piece of exceptional and intimate writing that embodies who you are now, who you hope to be and what path you'll take to get there. Your writing coach is Amy Randall, published author and DelCo's favorite substitute teacher. Amy is a professional ghostwriter for founders, CEOs, and entrepreneurs. The methodology she uses to create content for business people works seamlessly for high schoolers who want to craft powerful personal statements. By the end of the three-week session, you will have an essay (or two) that reflects who you are (unique). One that shows how the obstacles you may have had to navigate turned into invaluable life lessons (gritty). Finally, how your love of learning is reflected in all kinds of unusual and profound experiences (passionate). We don't guarantee that you will get into the college of your dreams, but we guarantee that your dreams may take on a different shape after this workshop.

Amy Randall began her career in publishing in the 1980s as a men’s fashion editor for Sportswear International and In Fashion magazines. She then became the US editor of Select and The Manipulator magazines and founded Randall, du Plessis, and Nada, a boutique advertising agency catering to men’s fashion brands. In the 1990s, Amy was the Executive Director of the National Writers Union, Local 1981 of the UAW. There she organized and advocated for freelance journalists and book authors through legislative actions, contract negotiations, and a landmark SCOTUS case concerning electronic rights. Today Amy is a ghostwriter and creative director for entrepreneurs and founders who want to create content that is as unique as they are. She is also a regular contributor to the Christian Science Monitor. Finally, Amy substitute teaches at Delaware Academy, where students, upon meeting her for the first time, invariably say, “You’re weird. When are you coming back.”

REGISTER NOW FOR: MORE MICRO-MEMOIR WITH LINDA LOWEN September 13 - October 18, 2022

Writers in the Mountains (WIM) presents More Micro-Memoir, a six-week long workshop with Linda Lowen, September 13 – October 18, 2022. The class will be held online Tuesdays, from 10 am to 12 noon. Once you register and pay, you will be given instructions on how to join the class.

Memoir doesn't have to cover decades to tell a story. Sometimes a single moment, vividly depicted, illuminates a life. If you’ve wanted to write memoir but are overwhelmed at the immensity of the task—or you’re already writing but need a fresh approach—consider micro memoir. The smaller format can be freeing, allowing you to focus on an event that serves as a microcosm of the larger experience. In this workshop you’ll write short 200-word pieces and discover less is more. Weeks 5 and 6 we’ll focus on Tiny Love Stories, relationship tales of 100 words or less, and you’ll come away with one piece suitable to submit to the New York Times column of the same name.

In this continuation of Micro Memoir (short creative nonfiction in 200 words or less) we'll focus on this tight form of writing, looking at either its placement in a longer piece (mosaic essay), as an interlude worked into longform writing, or on its own -- highlighting publishing outlets that welcome it. This class is intended for those who've already taken Micro Memoir with Linda, either at Writers in the Mountains or another workshop elsewhere.

A book reviewer for Publishers Weekly, Linda's nonfiction has been published in the New York Times and in the anthology "Tiny Love Stories: True Tales of Love in 100 Words or Less" (Artisan Books 2020). Her writing advice has appeared in The Writer and Writer's Digest magazines. She teaches creative nonfiction at the Downtown Writer’s Center in Syracuse, NY, and has led workshops at the Chautauqua Writers’ Festival and HippoCamp, the annual CNF conference
sponsored by Hippocampus magazine. Her website is lindalowen.com.

To register, e-mail writersinthemountains@gmail.com. To register online, visit writersinthemountains.org. Class fee is $125.

Written By Editor on 8/31/22 | 8/31/22

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women’s cross country team will be looking to rebound from a 2021 campaign that saw the Fighting Tigers compete incomplete for most of the season’s events and post an eighth place finish at the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Championships. With several key returners joined by a number of newcomers, Cobleskill Head Coach Mitch Tomaszkiewicz believes the program is moving in the right direction as he prepares for his 30th season directing the Orange & Black.

“We’ve seen significant improvement from our returners and have begun to rebuild our overall numbers,” said Tomaszkiewicz. “I think that we are making progress towards getting back to where we were pre-pandemic and are going to have a better season as we continue the rebuilding process.”

The Fighting Tigers will return two letter winners as well as their top runner from 2021 squad including sophomore Jenna Swyers, Peru, N.Y., Peru High School, who was the team’s top finisher in seven events during the season.

The newcomers will be highlighted by sophomore Katherine Ledermann, Guilderland, N.Y., Guilderland High School, a transfer from Canisius College who was a member of the women’s track & field team in the spring, first-year Lilly Swyers, Peru, N.Y., Peru High School, the younger sister of Jenna Swyers and freshman Alyssa Freeguard, Argyle, N.Y., Argyle High School, who earned All-Section II Class D Team honors while capturing the 2021 Adirondack League Girls Cross Country Championship.

Cobleskill will open the 2022 season on Saturday September 3 when they travel to Castleton, Vt. for the Castleton University Invitational hosted by Castleton University on the college’s cross country course beginning at 11:00 a.m.

Bassett Receives $82 Million Scriven Foundation Grant to Support Improved Access to Care and Key Investments in Staff

Bassett Word rule line.jpg

Cooperstown, N.Y. -  Bassett Medical Center is the recipient of an $82 million grant from the Scriven Foundation to make rapid improvements resulting in greater patient care access. The health system will also launch significant recruitment and retention initiatives for staff in key areas.

“Bassett has strived to provide excellent patient care as a leader in fostering healthy rural communities for more than a century,” says Tommy Ibrahim, MD, MHA, President & CEO of Bassett Healthcare Network. “Like hospitals and health systems across the country, the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has created many challenges in retention and recruitment, especially among physicians, advanced practice clinicians, and nurses, which is negatively and unacceptably impacting patient access to care.”

“Bassett provides care and services to patients across eight counties and 5,600 square miles in central New York state,” remarks Jane Forbes Clark, Chair of the Bassett Medical Center Board of Directors and President of the Scriven Foundation. “The organization’s tremendous footprint connects many thousands of patients with care who otherwise would not have access. I am proud of the critically important work Bassett has accomplished over more than 100 years – and continues to build upon – in rural medicine. On behalf of the Scriven Foundation, we are pleased to offer this impactful investment to bolster resources, benefits, and recruitment efforts for Bassett’s clinical workforce.”

“We are deeply grateful to the Scriven Foundation and Jane Forbes Clark for their remarkable support of Bassett and the communities we serve. This grant is immensely generous, and truly transformative for Bassett,” added Dr. Ibrahim. “Our continued success as an independent health system is possible because of mission-driven partnerships with organizations like the Scriven Foundation.”

“This innovative grant will fund new programs to address the challenges rural health care operations encounter every day while ensuring continued financial stability,” explains Doug Hastings, Chair of the Bassett Healthcare Network Board of Directors. Some of the programs the Scriven Foundation restricted grant will make possible include enhanced new investments in:
  • More competitive salaries, benefits, and retirement for practitioners
  • Improving access to childcare for employees
  • Increasing affordable housing options for employees
  • Developing new mentorship opportunities with local nursing schools
  • Decreasing administrative demands on practitioners by acquiring more support staff and Implementing technologically driven solutions
  • Increasing education and training programs for clinical staff
“This grant is truly a game-changer for patient care at Bassett,” shared Dr. Henry Weil, Chief Operating Officer for Bassett Medical Center and Chief Clinical & Academic Officer for Bassett Healthcare Network. “From our founding in 1922 to today, Bassett has discovered innovative ways to push the boundaries of rural health. The opportunities and benefits that this grant provides are immeasurable as we work to reaffirm Bassett as a best place to work and practice and best-in-class academic medical center. Most importantly, it ensures better access, care, health, and wellness for our patients and communities.”

In addition to the grant from the Scriven Foundation, Bassett recently announced that it has already invested approximately $50 million in increased compensation for its non-practitioner workforce this past year.

Bassett is also continuing to grow and deepen its partnership with Columbia University through their shared medical education, research, and clinical initiatives, helping to foster healthy rural communities.

“As a passionate advocate for advanced rural health care, I am tremendously excited about the transformational impact this Scriven Foundation grant will have on the long-standing partnership between Columbia University and Bassett,” says Katrina Armstrong, MD, Chief Executive Officer of Columbia University Irving Medical Center and Dean of the Faculties of Health Sciences and the Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons. “This is a great day for our patients and for those of us committed to addressing disparities and advancing health equity.”

SUNY COBLESKILL WOMEN’S SOCCER OPENS YEAR RANKED SIXTH IN NAC WESTERN DIVISION COACHES POLL

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill women’s soccer team will open the 2022 season ranked sixth in the initial North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division Coaches Poll. Under the direction of first-year head coach Chukwuma Asala the Fighting Tigers make their return to the pitch for the first-time post Covid.

After the program being on hiatus since 2020 the new Fighting Tiger Head Coach sees the pre-season ranking as expected but is looking at the season as a chance to take the program in a new direction.

“I want us to grow as a program and establish a culture that can develop into a NAC Championship caliber program.” Said Asala. “Covid and the coach leaving last year prior to the pre-season really did a number on us. A lot of programs struggled with these situations, but we were decimated. So, this year we are starting from scratch and making this a total rebuilding year.”

This year’s edition of the Orange & Black will feature a pair of players who were a part of the Fighting Tigers prior to the pandemic. Junior defender Lilah Ward, Arlington, Vt., Arlington Memorial High School, returns as does senior forward Julia Howard, Elizaville, N.Y., Germantown High School/Monroe College, who scored three goals in 2019 returning to Cobleskill after a stint at junior college power Monroe College.

Among the newcomers the Cobleskill will be counting on first-year midfielder Jessica Carney, Hopkinton, N.H., Hopkinton High School, a New Hampshire All-State Team selection who has shown creativity in the midfield and first-year forward Ashlynn DeRonda, Saugerties, N.Y., Saugerties High School, a speedy forward who can put pressure on the opposition’s defense.

Between the pipes, the Fighting Tigers will initially look to the goalie tandem of sophomore Alexis Minnoe, Syracuse, N.Y., Cicero-North Syracuse High School, and first-year Brianna Rogers, Canton, N.Y., Hugh C. Williams High School, top protect the net.

Cobleskill will open the season on Thursday September 2 when they travel to Morrisville, N.Y. for a non-league meeting with the Mustangs of Morrisville State College beginning at 8:00 p.m.

FIGHTING TIGER MEN’S SOCCER OPENS 2022 SEASON RANKED FIFTH IN NAC WESTERN DIVISION PRE-SEASON COACHES POLL

Cobleskill, N.Y.: The SUNY Cobleskill men’s soccer team will open the 2022 campaign ranked fifth overall in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Western Division Pre-Season Coaches Poll. The Fighting Tigers are coming off a 2021 season that saw them post a 4-12 overall record including a 3-6 mark against NAC opponents closing the year with a loss to SUNY Poly in the opening round of the league’s divisional play-off tournament.

With the upcoming season fast approaching Fighting Tiger Head Coach Joseph Machado is anxious to the year to begin and excited about what lays ahead for his squad.

“We’re excited for the new season in the NAC,” said Machado. “Last year was a learning experience in terms of what to expect and how to deal with things like travel and the style of play. Now it is time to take what we learned and apply it this year.

Among the returning players who will be counted on this season are the team’s two leading scorers, senior defender Tanner Reisman, Youngstown, N.Y., Greece-Athena High School, and junior midfielder Cater Ciavardoni, Latham, N.Y., Shaker High School, who each tallied four goals and an assist on the year. Senior defender Ben Kessler, Eastport, N.Y., St. Anthony’s High Schoolalso returns after a season that saw him play a key role in anchoring the defense while passing out a pair of assists.

The recruiting class will feature several newcomers who could become contributors to the program in the form of first-year midfielder Tanner Reisman, Youngstown, N.Y., Greece-Athena High School, first-year defender Dominic Ciano, Walden, N.Y., Valley Central High School, and first-year forward Trevor Masocco, Eden, N.Y., Eden High School.

When evaluating the roster and the upcoming season, Coach Machado sees that this is a different Fighting Tiger version over last year.

“We are definitely grittier and tougher defensively especially as our younger players learn to play Fighting Tiger soccer. Our DNA as a team has changed over the last year as we’ve gotten older and more experienced.”

The Orange & Black will open the season when they host the Trailblazers of the Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) for a non-conference match-up at the college’s Soccer/Lacrosse Complex with kick-off slated for 4:00 PM
