Franklin Stage Company Announces 2024 Summer Season

FRANKLIN — The Franklin Stage Company, Delaware County’s renowned classical summer theater, announces their 28th season from July 5th through August 25th. “We have such an exciting summer of performance coming up and we can’t wait!” said Patricia Buckley, Artistic Director. “We have great plays, music, and dance, and we’re so happy to bring it to our region.”

The season opens with Trouble in Mind by Alice Childress. Written in 1955, the play was slated to go to Broadway, but because of disputes between the playwright and producers, the play was shelved and only given its Broadway debut in 2021. The play tells the story of Wiletta Mayer, a middle aged actress at the top of her game, who has nevertheless spent her career playing stereotypes—maids, mammies, and other menials—and finally has her chance to play a big Broadway role. But when difficult truths spill out of the script and into the rehearsal room, the play takes a different turn. “It’s moving, illuminating, and surprisingly funny,” said Buckley, “but it’s also a play about work, race, and what it means to be an ally.” Trouble in Mind runs July 5-–July 21 with 5 shows per week. Next, on July 26-28, FSC presents Calpulli Mexican Dance Company. “We're thrilled with the energy, passion, and technique of this company,” said Buckley, “their narrative dances are born out of the Mexican-American experience and convey universal stories focusing on our shared humanity.” Founded in 2003, Calpulli has been described by The New York Times as a “vibrant tour of Mexican traditions with eye-popping costumes for every stop.” The following weekend, on August 2-4, FSC will present Yolanda Bush and the Cool Water Collective, melding Blues, Jazz, Rock, and R&B, and featuring musicians Evan Jagels, Tim Iversen, Wyatt Ambrose, and Joe Damone. FSC’s final production of the season is An Iliad, an adaptation of Homer’s classic story of the Trojan War, adapted by Lisa Peterson and Denis O'Hare in 2012. Set in an empty theater, the play portrays the experience of the eternal Homeric Bard, destined to tell the timeworn tale again, as soon as he can conjure a visit from the Muse. With live music.

Franklin Stage Company’s 28th season runs from July 5 through August 25 at Chapel Hall, 25 Institute Street in Franklin, NY. Please note all evening shows have a curtain time of 7:30 pm. Sunday shows are at 5:00 pm. Trouble in Mind and An Iliad  will also have 3:00 pm Saturday matinees. General Seating. Admission is free—suggested donation is $25 per person. For reservations, visit www.franklinstagecompany.org. Programming at the Franklin Stage Company is made possible by the New York State Council on the Arts with the support of Governor Kathy Hochul and the New York State Legislature.

FRANKLIN STAGE COMPANY's dual mission is to produce professional, admission-free theater that brings together audiences and artists to create community and celebrate the enduring power of stories; and to ensure the preservation of Chapel Hall, our historic home, as both an architectural treasure and a center of community activity.

Franklin Stage Company is a professional Actors Equity, not-for-profit theater founded in 1997 in Franklin, NY. FSC is dedicated to producing classic and new plays that stimulate thought and provoke discussion to illuminate as well as entertain. FSC also presents both emerging and established artists working in a variety of performance disciplines. The company was founded on the principle that great theater should be accessible to all.

Music on the Delaware is excited about bringing the popular bluegrass band, Della Mae, to the Walton Theatre at 30 Gardiner Place, on Saturday, May 11, 2024, at 7:30 p.m.

Della Mae is a GRAMMY-nominated all-woman string band founded by lead vocalist/guitarist Celia Woodsmith and two-time Grand National champion fiddle player Kimber Ludiker. Rounding out the current touring lineup are guitarist Avril Smith, and bassist Vickie Vaughn.

From the beginning, the band has been ahead of its time. Because the musicians hail from around North America with experience in diverse musical styles and genres, their performances blend many music traditions. Listeners may hear hints of rock, gospel, funk, swing, or honky-tonk, always in a bluegrass vein.

Della Mae’s mission as a band is to showcase top female musicians and to improve opportunities for women and girls through advocacy, mentorship, programming, and performance. To that end, they have teamed up with the US State Department to visit over 30 other countries spreading peace and understanding through music. “Advocating for women’s rights is the backbone of this band, and we realized that adding public service work to our touring was an important way we could make a difference.”

The band’s first album, I Built This Heart, was released in 2011. In 2014, their album, This World Oft Can Be, was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album at the 56th Grammy Awards. Their fourth album (2020), Headlight, is dedicated to celebrating powerful trailblazing women. Following up 2020’s Headlight, their new album Family Reunion captures the joy of the band reuniting after more than a year of virtual collaboration, Zooms and group texts.

“Every song on Family Reunion is a little gem of perfection. They shine brightly in all musical facets, with every note in its place but often leading us down unexpected paths.” (Folk Alley).

Doc Reinhart Releases New Single

Doc’s New Single “The Music’s Sounding Good  Again” tries to “Stop the Hurt, Break the Chains”  and Bring People Together Again

South Kortright - “The Music’s Sounding Good Again” is a memorable  anthem of empowerment. It’s both an individual and  collective spiritual call to arms, viscerally channeling a  deep inner power. It includes a driving verse with deep  cutting lines, an unexpected chant-like spiritual bridge  and an inspiring chorus that all contribute to a very  dynamic composition that feels much like an  awakening. The song summons bass lines reminiscent  of Motown, the danceability of the Bee Gees and a pop  sensibility similar to Michael Jackson all in one song. If  there is one line to summarize the mission of this tune,  it’s “Stop the hurt, break the chains, come together  again." Both musically and spiritually, this song does  take on the biggest of challenges and succeeds in a way  that you won’t forget.
